  • When an initially straight thin cylinder is bent, there is a tendency for the cross section to flatten. This phenomenon was investigated by L.G. Brazier in 1927 and is called "Brazier Effect" or "Brazier Theory". The main characteristic is the reduction of carrying capacity due to the decrease of bending stiffness by shortening of thickness with the increase of external load. And the relationship of curvature-bending moment becomes a soft spring type as shown in Fig.2. In this paper, the Brazier theory on plate type structures is investigated from the following view points : (1) What is the Brazier effect? (2) the reason of the occurrence of the Brazier effect in plate type structures by using beam model and (3) factors which cause the brazier effect.

  • Purpose: To analyze thermal effect on mechanical properties of domestic commercial polymer-based eyewear frames. Methods: In this study, materials of cellulose acetate, polyamide, epoxy, and polyetherimide were exposed to high or low temperature and were mounted on universal test machine (TO-100-IC) for tensile strength test. Elastic behavior, Young's modulus, maximum displacement, and fatigue were tested with various temperature ($-25^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$). Results: As a result, at room temperature, displacements of materials were changed with increasing impact load. At low temperature ($-25^{\circ}C$), maximum displacements of all specimens were decreased but young's modulus were increased. However, at high temperature, maximum displacements of all specimens were increased but young's modulus were decreased. Conclusions: Degree of displacements due to fatigue behavior was increased following direction of PEI, epoxy, polyamide, acetate. We concluded that commercial polymers used in eyewear frames physical properties were changed differently to exposed temperature.

  • Total ankle replacement (TAR) is a visible option in the surgical treatment of degenerative or inflammatory diseases of ankle joint. it is attributed to the current TAR which has improvements in surgical technique, uncemented implant fixation and minimally constrained articulation. In the clinical result, they can show promised surgical result when compared to earlier attempts in TAR. However, TAR is still not as successful as total knee replacement (TKR) or total hip replacement (THR), it needs to be note that there are limitations in concerning of long term performance of TAR, the high failure rate still associated with wear of the PE (polyethylene) component that has related with their material property and surface roughness. The aim of this study was to introduce the tribology characteristics of total ankle joint prosthesis with one of TDR model which was fabricated to try multi-axis wear test as a region of motion in ankle joint. The wear specimen of TDR was prepared with Ti-6Al-4V alloy and UHMWPE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) for tibia-talus and bearing component, respectively. A wear test was carried out using a Force 5 (AMTI, Massachusetts, US) wear simulator which can be allowed to move in three axis to flexion-extension ($+3^{\circ}{\sim}-6^{\circ}$), internal-external axial rotation (${\pm}5^{\circ}$), as well as sinusoidal compressive load (1.6 kN, R=10). All tests were performed following standard ISO 14243, wear rate was calculated with weight loss of UHMWPE bearing while the specimen has tested at certain cycles. As based on the preliminary results, wear rate of UHMWPE bearing was $7.9{\times}10^{-6}mg/cycles$ ($R^2=0.86$), calculated loss weight until $10^7cycles$ was 79 mg, respectively.

  • In this paper, a new subcarrier-based handover scheme which exploits different channel gains of subcarriers in downlink OFDMA cellular systems. In this handover scheme, mobile users can obtain diversity gain by subcarrier selection. Feedback for unselected subcarriers reduces interference. The capacity enhancement by the handover scheme is originated from the following two characteristics of OFDMA systems. One is that interference per subcarrier is proportional to the traffic load. The other is that every subcarrier has different channel gain ?? 새 the Rayleigh fading channel. Therefore, selecting subcarriers with stronger channel gains results in diversity gain. Simulation results confirm that the proposed handover scheme improves the capacity of the OFDMA systems by reducing 24 percentage of the outage probability.

  • This study has been conducted to achieve the following objectives: First, in order to understand the horizontal propagation and attenuation characteristics for the railroad traffic noise, we selected areas within 100 meters away from the railroad and then selected Saemaul-ho and Mugoongwha-ho as the subjects for our experiment. In this way, we analyzed the horizontal propagation and attenuation characteristics for the traffic noise occurring in diversified areas. Second, in order to understand the vertical propagation and attenuation characteristics for the railroad traffic noise, we measured and analyzed the distributional characteristics of vertical sound pressure levels on each floor of multi-storied apartment buildings according to changes of traffic load and types, and the existence or nonexistence of soundproof walls. For the case of the railroad traffic noise, we also selected Samaul-ho and Mugoongwha-ho as the subjects for our experiment, and we measured and analyzed the different noise levels on each floor of multi-storied apartment buildings from the soundproof wall. The results of Horizontal propagation and attenuation characteristics for the railroad traffic noise are as follows: In cases of the flat land, cutting land, and bridge area, as distance increases, the sound pressure level steadily decreases. The sound pressure level for the bridge area is higher than that of the flat land with a measurement of $5.5{\sim}10.2\;dB(A)$. Vertical propagation and attenuation characteristics for the railroad traffic noise are as follows: The amount of sound pressure level decrease is $14.2{\sim}14.8\;dB(A)$ for Samaul-ho and $13.5{\sim}14.3\;dB(A)$ for Mugoongwha-ho when measuring the vertical sound pressure levels at heights lower than 4.5 m, which indicates a fairly large decrease. At 6 m, the amount of decrease is 8.6 dB(A) for Samaul-ho and 8.2 dB(A) for Mugoongwha-ho, which indicates a small decrease.

  • It was the aim of this investigation to evaluate some histologic aspect of rat pulp tissue after it had been compromised by an experimental orthodontic force. Experimental animals of thirty five Spraque-Dawley rats were employed. The first upper molars had been successively mesial moved (initial load 100 gr.) with a closed coil spring during 21 days. The experimental periods were set on immediate, 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks following retention time. On each experimental period, the rats were killed and prepared for the light microscopy. After prepared with H/E stain and Gomori's one-step trichrome stain, the specimens were analyzed with evaluation criteria which were adopted in this study. The result may be summarized as follows; 1. The main pulp changes due to experimental orthodontic force included vacuolization of odontoblastic layer, circulation disturbance, root resorption, reduced pulp collagenous fiber density and mean cell count of pulp fibroblast in the immediate group. 2. The pulp tissue changes were revealed reversible because the relieved pulp tissues from experimental orthodontic force were recovered rapidly in each evaluation criteria during retention periods. 3. Compared with normal control group, pulp collagenous fiber density were decreased in immediated group (p < 0.01), but increased in each retention groups. These seem to suggest that the pulp tissues were aged after experimental orthodontic force conditions. 4. Compared with normal control group, mean cell counts of pulp fibroblasts were decreased in immediate group (p < 0.05), but increased continuous in each retention groups. These seem to indicate that the pulp tissues were highly regenerative after experimental orthodontic force conditions. 5. Compared with normal control group, root resorptions occurred in all immediate specimens (p < 0.01) and they were healed in each retention periods, but often observed in 4 weeks retention group. These seem to indicate that root resorptions were recovered slowly after experimental orthodontic force conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to perform a literature review of short implants in the posterior maxilla and to assess the influence of different factors on implant success rate. A comprehensive search was conducted to retrieve articles published from 2004 to 2015 using short dental implants with lengths less than 10 mm in the posterior maxilla with at least one year of follow-up. Twenty-four of 253 papers were selected, reviewed, and produced the following results. (1) The initial survival rate of short implants in the posterior maxilla was not related to implant width, surface, or design; however, the cumulative success rate of rough-surface short implants was higher than that of machined-surface implants especially in performance of edentulous dental implants of length <7 mm. (2) While bone augmentation can be used for rehabilitation of the atrophic posterior maxilla, short dental implants may be an alternative approach with fewer biological complications. (3) The increased crown-to-implant (C/I) ratio and occlusal table (OT) values in short dental implants with favorable occlusal loading do not seem to cause peri-implant bone loss. Higher C/I ratio does not produce any negative influence on implant success. (4) Some approaches that decrease the stress in posterior short implants use an implant designed to increase bone-implant contact surface area, providing the patient with a mutually protected or canine guidance occlusion and splinting implants together with no cantilever load. The survival rate of short implants in the posterior edentulous maxilla is high, and applying short implants under strict clinical protocols seems to be a safe and predictable technique.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the shear bond strength between porcelain laminate veneer and enamel according to the surface treatment and thermocycling. Group I, as a control group, was sandblasted only; group II was sandblasted and etched; group III was sandblasted and silane treated; and group IV was sandblasted, etched and silane treated. A porcelain block was placed onto the etched enamel under a 150g static load and the bonded site was light-cured from 4 directions for 1 minute each. The 72 bonded specimens were stored in water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 day. Half of each group were thermocycled at $4^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ for 100 cycles with a dwelling time in each bath of 1 min. Following thermocycling, the specimens were installed in an Instron universal testing machine and the shear bond strength was measured. After the specimens were fractured, the fractured surfaces were examined with SEM. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The shear bond strength of the sandblasted and etched and silane treated group(Group IV) was the strongest of all, and the shear bond strengths between the sandblasted group(Group I) and the sandblasted and silane treated group(Group III) were not statistically different(p>0.05). 2. When the shear bond strength was measured after thermocycling, only the sandblasted, etched and silane treated group(Group IV) was statistically different(p<0.05). 3. The scanning electron microscopic views of the fractured surfaces show more irregularities and more resin fragments in the etched group than in the unetched group. 4. The scanning electron microscopic views of the fractured surfaces show a more delicate surface after thermocycling and after silane treatment than before thermocycling and before silane treatment.

  • Bending moments results from offset overloading of dental implant, which may cause stress concentrations to exceed the physiological capacity of cortical bone and lead to various kinds of mechanical failures. The purpose of this study was to compare the distributing pattern of stress on the finite element models with the different angulated placement of dental implant in mandibular posterior missing areas. The three kinds of finite element model, were designed according to 3 main configurations: Model 1(parallel typed placement of 2 fixtures), Model 2(15. distal angulated placement of one fixture on second molar area), Model 3(15. mesial angulated placement of one fixture on second molar area). The cemented crowns for mandibular first and second molars were made on the two fixtures (4mm 11.5). Three-dimensional finite element models by two fixtures were constructed with the components of the implant and surrounding bone. A 200N vertical static load were applied to the center of central fossa and the point 2mm apart from the center of central fossa on each model. The preprocessing, solving and postprocessing procedures were done by using FEM analysis software NISA/DISPLAY IV Version 10.0((Engineering Mechanics Research Corporation, USA). Von Mises stresses were evaluated and compared in the supporting bone, fixtures, and abutment. The results were as following : (1) Under the point loading at the central fossa, the direction of angulated fixture affected the stress pattern of implants. (2) Under the offset loading, the position of loading affected more on the stress concentration of implants compare to the angulated direction of implants. The results had a tendency to increase the stress on the supporting bone, fixture and screw under the offset loads when the placement angulation of implant fixture is placed toward mesial or distal direction. In designing of the occlusal scheme for angulated placement, placing the occlusal contacts axially during chewing appears to have advantages in a biomechanical viewpoint.

  • We have been making dual dome enclosures which are useful to track artificial space objects at SSNT (Space Science and Technology Lab.) Kyung Hee University. We verified the safety of the dome enclosures using basic design and structure analyses before manufacturing them, and then performed an optimization analysis for economic and safe systems. The dome enclosure has a fully-open type structure to smoothly operate a telescope made in the style of altazimuth mount with very fast tracking. It is also designed to be safe against extreme weather conditions. The general structure of the observatory system consists of the dual dome enclosures at the top of a container. For the structural analyses, we consider the following two methods: (1) gravitational sustain analysis - how the structure supporting the dome withstand the weight of the dome, and (2) wind load analysis that considers the effect of the wind velocity at the region where the observatory is located. The result of overall deformation is found to be less than 0.551mm and the result of equivalent stress is found to be 20.293Mpa, indicating that the dual dome system is reasonably designed. This means structurally to be safe.
