The main purpose of this study is to discuss the design wind loads for the structural frames of single-layer latticed domes with long spans. First, wind pressures are measured simultaneously at many points on dome models in a wind tunnel. Then, the dynamic response of several models is analyzed in the time domain, using the pressure data obtained from the wind tunnel experiment. The nodal displacements and the resultant member stresses are computed at each time step. The results indicate that the dome's dynamic response is generally dominated by such vibration modes that contribute to the static response significantly. Furthermore, the dynamic response is found to be almost quasi-static. Then, a series of quasi-static analyses, in which the inertia and damping terms are neglected, is made for a wide range of the dome's geometry. Based on the results, a discussion is made of the design wind load. It is found that a gust effect factor approach can be used for the load estimation. Finally, an empirical formula for the gust effect factor and a simple model of the pressure coefficient distribution are provided.

Bridge load rating calculations provide a basis for determining the load carrying capacity of bridges. Load rating requires engineering judgement in determining a rating value that is applicable to maintaining the safe use of the bridge and arriving at posting and permit decisions. Load testing is an effective means in calculating the rating value of bridge. In Korea, load carrying capacity of bridge is modified by response modification factor that is determined from comparisons of measured values and analysis results. This paper presents the development of a method for determining the response the modification factor, using traffic loads. The proposed method is based on the results of computer simulations of traffic action effects. The simulation program generates random traffic actions for defined traffic conditions and determines the frequency distribution of maximum traffic action effects. A comparison between the proposed method and the present method shows good agreement in estimating the modified load carrying capacity of bridges.

Conducting statistical analysis of foundation resistance using sufficient number of well-performed load test results is prerequisite for the calibration of reliable resistance factors for foundation LRFD. In this study, a rational analysis method is proposed so that the proof pile load test results can be reflected in update of resistance statistical characteristics based on Bayesian theory. Then, resistance factors for driven steel pipe piles compatible with Korea foundation practices are updated by implementing this rational analysis method. To accomplish the resistance factor updates, (1) prior pile resistance distribution is constructed based on the results of pile load tests, which loads are imposed at least up to their ultimate limit loads. (2) likelihood function is obtained from the results of proof pile load tests, and (3) posterior pile resistance distribution is updated by combining these prior pile resistance distribution and likelihood function. The resistance factors are updated using the posterior pile resistance following the first-order reliability method (FORM). From the possible results of five consecutive proof pile load tests, the updated resistance factors vary within ranges of 0.27-0.96 and 0.19-0.68 for target reliability indices of 2.33 and 3.0, respectively. Consequently, it was found that the Bayesian theory-implemented method enables the updates of resistance factors in an efficient way when reliable resistance factors are not available due to the lack of well-performed pile load test results.
Adequate bone quality and stress distribution to the bone are of decisive importance for implant success. Even though the success rates of dental implants have been high, implant failures do occur. Overloading has been identified as a primary factor behind dental implant failure. The purpose of this study was to theoretically investigate the effect of two types of implants on the stress distribution in poor bone quality. Employing the finite element method, the study modeled a 4.1 mm diameter, 12.0 mm length implant placed in cortical or spongeous bone. A static loading of lOON was applied at the occlusal surface at 0, 30 degrees angle to the vertical axis of the implant. von Mises stresses concentrations in the supporting bone were analyzed with finite element analysis program. The results were as follows; 1. The stresses at the marginal bone were higher under buccal oblique load(30 degrees off of the long axis) than under vertical load. 2. Under buccal oblique load, the stresses were higher at the lingual marginal bone than at the buccal marginal bone, and the differences were almost the same. 3, Under vertical and oblique load, the stress was the highest at the marginal bone and lowest at the bone around apical portions of implant in cortical bone. 4, Under vertical load, Model 1 showed more effective stress distribution than Model 2 irrespective of bone types. On the other hand, Model 2 showed lower stress concentration than Model 1 under buccal oblique load.
In this study, the effects of cross beams on the lateral distribution of live loads in composite rolled H-beam girder bridges, were investigated through three-dimensional finite element analysis. The parameters considered in this study were the inertial moment ratio between the main girder and the cross beam, the presence of the cross beam, and the number of cross beams. The live load lateral distribution factors were investigated through finite element analysis and the customary grid method. The results show that there was no difference between the bridge models with and without a cross beam. The cross beam of the beam and frame types also showed almost the same live load lateral distribution factors. However, the finite element analysis showed that the concrete slab deck plays a major role in the lateral distribution of a live load, and consequently, the effect of the cross beam is not so insignificant that it can be neglected.

The temperature of power transformers is very important factor for power system operation in substation because load capacity and limited lifetime of power transformers are determined by winding temperature. Also, The temperature of power transformers varies with the structure, capacity, operation condition and manufacturers. Thus, it is necessary for temperature distribution to be exactly investigated because of efficient load management and prediction of limited lifetime. Nevertheless, there was no case of analysis as well as measurement of the temperature of power transformers. In this paper, we manufactured the 154kV standard power transformer for the test. And we measured the temperature by the heat run test and analyzed the temperature distribution of transformer.
This paper presents the two-, three-, and four-lane transverse reduction factor based on FEA method, probability theory, and the recently actual traffic flow data. A total of 72 composite girder bridges with various spans, number of lanes, loading mode, and bridge type are analyzed with time-varying static load FEA method by ANSYS, and the probability models of vehicle load effects at arbitrary-time point are developed. Based on these probability models, in accordance to the principle of the same exceeding probability, the multi-lane transverse reduction factor of these composite girder bridges and the relationship between the multi-lane transverse reduction factor and the span of bridge are determined. Finally, the multi-lane transverse reduction factor obtained is compared with those from AASHTO LRFD, BS5400, JTG D60 or Eurocode. The results show that the vehicle load effect at arbitrary-time point follows lognormal distribution. The two-, three-, and four-lane transverse reduction factors calculated by using FEA method and probability respectively range between 0.781 and 1.027, 0.616 and 0.795, 0.468 and 0.645. Furthermore, a correlation between the FEA and AASHTO LRFD, BS5400, JTG D60 or Eurocode transverse reduction factors is made for composite girder bridges. For the two-, three-, and four-lane bridge cases, the Eurocode code underestimated the FEA transverse reduction factors by 27%, 25% and 13%, respectively. This underestimation is more pronounced in short-span bridges. The AASHTO LRFD, BS5400 and JTG D60 codes overestimated the FEA transverse reduction factors. The FEA results highlight the importance of considering span length in determining the multi-lane transverse reduction factors when designing two-lane or more composite girder bridges. This paper will assist bridge engineers in quantifying the adjustment factors used in analyzing and designing multi-lane composite girder bridges.
The AASHTO wheel load distribution factor (LDF) equation has been with us since 1931 and has undergone minor modifications. In 1994, an entirely new procedure was introduced in the AASHTO LRFD code based on parametric studies and finite element analyses. However, this LDF equation involves a longitudinal stiffness parameter, the design of which is not initially known. Thus, an iterative procedure is required to correctly determine the LDF value. The increased level of complexity puts undue burden on the designer resulting in a higher likelihood for misinterpretation and error. In this study, based on current AASHTO LRFD framework, a new simplified equation is developed that does not require an iterative procedure. A total of 43 representative composite steel girder bridges are selected and analyzed using a finite element model. The new simplified equation produces LDF values that are always conservative when compared to those obtained from the finite element analyses and are generally greater than the LDF obtained using AASHTO LRFD specification. Therefore, the proposed simplified equation is expected to streamline the determination of LDF for bridge design without sacrificing safety.

This study is concerned with the estimation of fluctuate wind velocity statistic properties in the major cities reflecting the recent meteorological with largest data samples (yearly 2003-2012). The basic wind speeds were standardized homogeneously to the surface roughness category C, and to 10m above the ground surface. The estimation of the extreme of non-Gaussian load effects for design applications has often been treated tacitly by invoking a conventional wind design (gust load peak factor) on the basis of Gaussian processes. This assumption breaks down when the loading processes exhibits non-Gaussianity, in which a conventional wind design yields relatively non conservative estimates because of failure to include long tail regions inherent to non-Gaussian processes. This study seeks to ascertain the probability distribution function from recently wind data with effected typhoon & maximum instantaneous wind speed.

This paper presents an optimization of gear web design used in a main gear train of an engine reduction gearbox for a rotorcraft. The optimization involves the minimization of a total weight, transmission error, misalignment, and face load distribution factor. In particular, three design variables such as a gear web thickness, location of rim-web connection, and location of shaft-web connection were set as design parameters. In the optimization process, web, rim and shaft of gears were converted from the 3D CAD geometry model to the finite element model, and then provided as input to the gear simulation program, MASTA. Lastly, NSGA-II optimization method was used to find the best combination of design parameters. As a result of the optimization, the total weight, transmission error, misalignment, face load distribution factor were all reduced, and the maximum stress was also shown to be a safe level, confirming that the overall gear performance was improved.
