It is very important to collect information on the nutritional status of the Korean population for the development of health promotion programs including nutrition. The purpose of this study was to assess the nutritional status of various population living in selected areas for model nutritional work. Seven hundred eighty households(30 households per each area)from 26 areas participated in this study from November 1 to November 20, 1996. Dietary intake data for two consecutive days were collected at household level by a weighting method. The mean energy intake of the subjects(1,934kcal) was higher than that resulted from the ‘95 Korean National Nutrition Survey(1,839kcal). The proportion of energy derived from cereals was 60.1%. The proportion of total protein intake from animal sources was 49.4%. These results were similar to those found in the ‘95 Korean National Nutrition Survey. Most nutrients(except iron, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin C, and crude fiber) were higher than the result of the ‘95 Korean National Nutrition Survey. However, the average iron intake was about 68% of the result of ‘95 Korean National Nutrition Survey. This may be due to the adjustment of iron content in rice(3.7mg/100glongrightarrow0.5mg/100g) included in nutrient database for calculating nutrient intakes. The mean energy contribution from carbohydrate, protein, and fat were 64.2%, 16.4% and 19.4%, respectively. Significant differences of nutrient intakes were noted among some areas, which may be due to different food intake patterns according to the needs of the particular area. Therefore, the result of this study indicates that there are significant differences in food and nutrient intakes among the areas, suggesting that nutritional improvement programs may need to be developed differently by areas.
Housing environments of individuals and families can have considerable influence on their quality of life. This study examines the factors influencing housing satisfaction and compares them between rural and urban areas. A total of 3,958 households collected from a nationwide survey were analyzed using an ordered probit model. The results indicate that housing satisfaction was influenced by individual, housing, and neighborhood attributes. The factors that differentiated between rural and urban models were sex, housing type, and relationships with neighbors. The results have important policy issues for improving rural housing.
As modern cities have become more developed by making factories and modern industries, the countryside areas were confront with civilization compare than before. This study attempted to explore the characteristics of conflicts in marriage life, and to analyze their impacts on global marital satisfaction perceived by wives in rural areas. The survey data was gathered from 151 rural wives. The degrees of three types of conflicts were shown to be low. while in terms of the degree of seriousness, environmental, interpersonal and intrapersonal are in descending order. Especially the degree of the environmental types of conflicts were significantly different across the family life cycle. In order to analyze the relationships between the types of conflicts and the marital satisfaction, logistic regression were performed. It was found that the environmental type of conflict was negatively associated with the likelihood of satisfaction in the marriage life. On the other hand, one of the control variables, the degree of satisfaction on the husband's job, i.e., farming, was positively associated with it.
The objectives of the study were to analyze the current conditions of the“NONGCHON ILGAM GATCI”project (an income generating project for rural areas) and to suggest possible improvements. Among the 567 business which have been supported by the project, implemented in 1990 by the Department of Rural-Home-Improvement of the Rural Development Administration, 361 (63.7%) can be categorized as being in the self-supporting stage. Another 126 (22.2%) can be said to be in the incubation stage. Data for the case study was collected from 20 project sites. The“NONGCHON ILGAM GATCI”project has been progressing successfully when compared with other rural development projects. However, there are still some problems. Among the problems are the lack of a business mindset and management abilities in individuals, and the fact that the businesses and their products are not well hewn on the market. To remedy these problems, education toward improving business and management skills, a unified public relations system, and institutional support from the government are greatly needed.
Purpose: This study was done to examine factors affecting quality of life among community-dwelling elderly women who live in rural areas. Methods: The design of this research was cross-sectional descriptive study. The participants were 92 community-dwelling women aged 65 or older. Data were collected from November 1 to 15, 2013. ADL (Kart's Index), GDS-SF (Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form) and GQOL (Geriatric Quality of Life Scale) were used to measure variables. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Spearman's coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The participants' mean age was 77.5, and 85.9% had elementary school graduation or less education, and for 64.1%, their economic status was low. Spearman's rho coefficient analysis found that QOL was significantly associated with depression (r=-.72, p<.001), perceived health (r=.58, p<.001), regular exercise (r=.47, p<.001), education level (r=.29, p=.005), and ADL (r=-.21, p=.043). Multiple regression analysis showed that 65.9% of their QOL was explained by depression (${\beta}=-.72$), perceived health (${\beta}=.24$), ADL (${\beta}=-.16$), exercise (${\beta}=.22$) and number of diseases (${\beta}=.19$). Conclusion: These results indicate that older women who live rural areas need support for ADL, and prevention of depression to improve their quality of life.
The purpose of this study is to suggest efficient methods for estimating population exposed to noises by analyzing differences of population exposed to noises estimated by each method through comparing exposed population estimated by utilizing existing methods and those estimated by using census output areas reflecting the actual population information of each address. For population exposed to noises, the error of exposed population estimated by using the per capita living space turned out to be the biggest, and other estimation methods had no significant difference. For population exposed to excess noises, as a result of analyzing population estimated by each method based on census output areas, the error of the method using a grid noise map turned out to be the biggest. For the method to estimate population exposed to noises by using a noise map, the estimation methods using census output areas and total ground area are considered to be more rational than the grid noise map estimation method or the method to estimate the living space per capita.
Purpose: This study was to investigate relationships among health promotion behavior, family resilience, marital communication, and successful aging of the new middle-aged living in rural areas. Methods: Data collection was conducted from May 1 to June 20, 2021, participants were 119 adults aged 50~69 living in rural areas. The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS/WIN 23.0 program for descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. Results: As a result, factors influencing successful aging for the new middle-aged were avocation (β=-.27, p=.002.), family resilience (β=.24, p=.045), marital communication (β=.22, p=.023), gender (β=.19, p=.023), and the explanatory power of 31.0%. Conclusion: These results suggest that it is necessary to develop a program to strengthen personal avocation, family resilience, and marital communication.
