Adsorption characteristics of glass fibers, obtained from the spent lithium primary batteries recycling process, were investigated for the removal of Acid Red 27 dye from aqueous solution. The batch data clearly showed that increasing the initial sorptive concentration apparently enhanced the amount adsorbed and the uptake process followed the pseudo-second order rate model. The equilibrium adsorption data at different initial sorptive concentrations were fitted well to Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms. Moreover, the increase in temperature, favored the uptake of dye on this solid, indicated the process was endothermic in nature. Further, using the temperature dependence sorption data obtained at different temperatures was used to estimate various thermodynamic parameters.

The present study has evaluated the $CO_2$ adsorption amount of activated carbon pellets (AC). Coconut shell based test AC were modified with surface impregnation of glycine, glycine metal salts and monoethanolamine for low level $CO_2$ (3000 ppm) adsorption. Physical and chemical properties of prepared adsorbents were analyzed and the adsorbed amount of $CO_2$ was investigated by using pure and 3,000 ppm $CO_2$ levels. The impregnation of nitrogen functionalities was verified by XPS analysis. The adsorption capacity for pure $CO_2$ gas was found to reach upto 3.08 mmol/g by AC-LiG (Activated carbon-Lithium glycinate), which has the largest specific surface area ($1026.9m^2/g$). As for low level $CO_2$ flow the primary amine impregnated adsorbent showed 0.26 mmol/g of adsorption amount, indicating the highest selectivity. An adsorbent with potassium-glycine salts (AC-KG, Activated carbon-Potassium glycinate) instead of amine presented with 0.12 mmol/g of adsorption capacity, which was higher than that of raw activated carbon granules (0.016 mmol/g).

This study examined the utility of two zwitterions, nitrile-functionalized zwitterions and a zwitterion without a nitrile group (MF-ZI), were used as additives along with 1 M $LiPF_6$ in ethylene carbonate (EC):diethylene carbonate (DEC) (3:7 V/V) (E-0) to form an electrolyte solution for use in lithium ion batteries comprising graphite and $LiCoO_2$ electrodes. The presence of NF-ZI (E-NF-ZI) in the electrolyte produced an ion conductivity comparable to that of E-0 and higher than that of an electrolyte containing MF-ZI (E-MF-ZI). Linear sweep voltammetry data revealed that the intensity of the E-NF-ZI reduction peak was lower than that of E-0. Furthermore, the successful formation of an SEI layer in the E-NF-ZI over graphite was confirmed by cyclic voltammetry data. These results were attributed to the adsorption of NF-ZI on the electrode surface, as verified by differential capacity measurements.

The use of ion exchange resins to remove ionic impurities from solution is prevalent in industrial process systems, including in the primary heat transport system (PHTS) purification circuit of nuclear power plants. Despite its extensive use in the nuclear industry, our general understanding of ion exchange cannot fully explain the complex chemistry in ion exchange beds, particularly when operated at or near their saturation limit. This work investigates the behaviour of mixed-bed ion exchange resin, saturated with species representative of corrosion products in a CANDU (Canadian Deuterium Uranium) reactor PHTS, particularly with respect to iron chemistry in the resin bed and the removal of lithium ions from solution. Experiments were performed under deaerated conditions, analogous to normal PHTS operation. The results show interesting iron chemistry, suggesting the hydrolysis of cation resin bound ferrous species and the subsequent formation of either a solid hydrolysis product or the soluble, anionic Fe(OH)3-.

Silicon-carbon composite was prepared by the magnesiothermic reduction of mesoporous silica and subsequent impregnation with a carbon precursor. This was applied for use as an anode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. Well-ordered mesoporous silica(SBA-15) was employed as a starting material for the mesoporous silicon, and sucrose was used as a carbon source. It was found that complete removal of by-products ($Mg_2Si$ and $Mg_2SiO_4$) formed by side reactions of silica and magnesium during the magnesiothermic reduction, was a crucial factor for successful formation of mesoporous silicon. Successful formation of the silicon-carbon composite was well confirmed by appropriate characterization tools (e.g., $N_2$ adsorption-desorption, small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analyses). A lithium-ion battery was fabricated using the prepared silicon-carbon composite as the anode, and lithium foil as the counter-electrode. Electrochemical analysis revealed that the silicon-carbon composite showed better cycling stability than graphite, when used as the anode in the lithium-ion battery. This improvement could be due to the fact that carbon efficiently suppressed the change in volume of the silicon material caused by the charge-discharge cycle. This indicates that silicon-carbon composite, prepared via the magnesiothermic reduction and impregnation methods, could be an efficient anode material for lithium ion batteries.
In this study, the heavy metal ions (of Pb, Cd, Cr, and Hg) in wastewater were removed using a spent Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2-based crystallized glass previously used as an induction top plate material. Changes in the removal efficiency of heavy metals according to different reaction parameters, such as the amount of zeolite used as a heavy-metal adsorbent, adsorption time, initial concentration of the heavy metals, and pH of the initial solution, were investigated. As the amount of zeolite added increased, the heavy-metal removal efficiency also increased. Adsorption time had a considerable influence on adsorption characteristics, and the removal efficiency of all heavy metals increased with increasing adsorption time. In the case of Cd, the removal efficiency was greatly improved depending on the adsorption time. The initial concentration of the heavy-metal solution did not affect the removal efficiency; however, the initial pH of the heavy-metal solution affected the removal efficiency. More specifically, the removal efficiency of Cd increased while that of Pb and Cr decreased with increasing pH. The adsorption characteristics of Hg were not significantly affected by pH.
Dissociation into Lithium-polysulfide electrolyte due to repeated cycles during the Lithium/Sulfur battery reaction is a major problem of reduced battery lifespan. We searched for a porous carbon with a large specific surface area that infiltrated S to prevent liquid Lithium-polysulfide from being dissolved in electrolyte, induce adsorption of Lithium-polysulfide, and further increase conductivity. In order to obtain porous carbon spheres with a large specific surface area, the carbon spheres of 1939 m2/g were raised to 2200 m2/g through additional KOH treatment. In addition, through heat treatment with S, a carbon sulfur compound containing 75 wt% of S was fabricate and material analysis was conducted on the possibility of using the cathode material. The electrochemical characteristics of the Reference (622; sulfur: 60%, conductive material: 20%, binder: 20%) pouch cell and the pouch cell made using 75wt% of carbon sulfur compound were analyzed. 75wt% of carbon sulfur pouch cell showed a 20% increase in lifespan and 10% improvement in C-rate compared to the Reference pouch cell after 50 cycles.
The subject of this study is a zeolite generated as a by-product of recycling LAS (lithium-aluminum-silicate) resources, a kind of glass and ceramic produced by induction. The zeolite by-product is modified into Mg-zeolite using Mg as a cation to absorb Pb, a heavy metal generated from water pollution caused by recent industrial wastewater. An ion-exchange method is used to carry out the modification process, from zeolite byproduct to Mg-zeolite, and simultaneously absorb the Pb in the heavy-metal solution (99.032 mg/L). It is found that the sodium zeolite in the raw material residue can be modified to magnesium zeolite by reacting it with a mixture solution at 1 M concentration for 24 h. As a result, it is found that the residual Pb (0.130 mg/L) in the heavy metal solution is shown to be absorbed by 99.86%, with successful formation of a Mg-modified zeolite.
Highly ordered Li dispersed nickel oxide nanotubes were prepared with anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template for hydrogen storage. Electron microscope results showed that uniform length and diameter of nickel oxide nanotubes were obtained. The wall thickness and outer diameter of nickel oxide nanotubes are about 40 - 50 nm and 200 - 400 nm, respectively. It was observed that the diameter of nickel oxide nanotubes is bigger than the pore diameter of AAO template. Li dispersed nickel oxide were consisted of nanoflakes and had structures of nanotubes and nanorods. For increasing the hydrogen adsorption and desorption capacity, the Li dispersed nickel oxide nanotubes were fluorinated. The fluorinated Li dispersed nickel oxide nanotubes showed 1.65 wt% of the hydrogen adsorption capacities at 77 K under 47 atm.
The multifunctional cation exchangers, sulfonated polypropylene-g-(acrylic acid/styrene) [PP-g-(AAc/Sty)] were synthesized by the irradiational grafting of AAc and Sty onto PP staple fabric with electron beam accelerator and its subsequent sulfonation. The highest degree of grafting obtained was 190% at a monomer mixture of 30 vol% AAc: 70 vol% Sty and a solvent mixture of 30 vol% water : 70 vol% methanol and the degree of grafting decreased with an increase of the AAc content in the monomer mixture at constant solvent content. Maximum ion exchange capacity of the copolymer was 4.6 meq/g. The Li$^{+}$ adsorption ability of the copolymer synthesized in the study was the best among PP-g- AAc, sulfonated PP-g-Sty, and sulfonated PP-g-(AAc/Sty).).
