  • Cultural Studies is characterized by being opposed to (elite) literary studies not only because it points to popular or non-elite literature which is usually not dealt with by elite literary scholars or comparatists, but also because it severely challenges the established literary canon and even tries to subvert this elite-oriented canon. In addition, Cultural Studies complements literary studies in that it contributes a great deal to the reconstruction of new literary canon by expanding the narrow domain of (elite) literature and its studies. What was not touched upon by traditional literary scholars is now studied by Cultural Studies scholars. In this sense, we should realize that it is not the field of Cultural Studies that occupies the domain of literary studies, but rather, it has expanded its traditional domain and added some new cultural elements. This article will illustrate how the interdisciplinary writings of some of the representative Anglo-American literary scholars have paved the way for effective dialogues between literary studies and Cultural Studies. I argue that the practice of Cultural Studies in China will not only contribute to global Cultural Studies in general, but also carry on equal dialogue with its Western and international counterparts. My purpose is to deal with the challenge of Cultural Studies to comparative literature studies in general before mapping the new orientations of Cultural Studies in $21^{th}$ century China.

  • In this paper, I suggest methodological ways of studying comparative literature regarding ongoing discussions of world and national literature. The role of comparative literature studies has widened in the contemporary era, in which nations have become rapidly entangled and the concept of the world as a unified entity is under question. In this regard, I critically review the traditional principles of the hospitality of cosmopolitanism and the exclusivity of the borders of national literatures. Further, I suggest that scholars adopt the concept by Sigmund Freud of "unfamiliar familiarity" as a methodological motive for studies of comparative literature. Based on this concept, scholars can further develop the unique methods of the discipline of comparative literary studies for teaching and research amidst the ongoing phenomenon of globalization. They can also use these methods to simultaneously contribute to solving the problem of "comparison without a unifying category of the world," as revealed by the results of deconstructional and postcolonial studies. Regarding community-based discussions of literature, I introduce the "bridge and door" metaphor, put forth by Georg Simmel, as a key concept in methodological consideration of translation and in comparative literary studies. In this paper, adopting the metaphor of the bridge and door as an intertextual and social model for comparative studies, I define the new role of comparative literary studies in literary transnationalism, which is particularly necessary when different languages and cultures overlap and become entangled. Regarding the rapidly changing contemporary world community, comparative literary studies, as an experimental discipline, is uniquely capable of examining this kind of community, which forms itself beyond and beneath individual nations.

  • This paper is the study of literary modernism school(新感覺派 xinganjuepai), appeared in the early 20th century in China and Japan. This literary modernism, developed in Japan in the 1920s, was developed in China after 10 years in the 1930s. Chinese literary modernism was influenced by the Japanese school. However, the following occurs the difference in modernism caused by background of the two countries. Japanese school of literary modernism was formed by a backlash against the proletarian literature. The rivalry between Japanese proletarian literature and literary modernism occurred in 1920's. Literary modernism in China occurred in the course of the development of the proletarian literature, as part. In addition, China's literary writers of modernism have expressed their support proletarian literature for the position. This difference between the two countries can be caused by the difference of historical background (imperial and colonial) in early 20th century.

  • Using literary and educational points of view, this study examined the prizewinning poems for children in the Annual Literary Contest sponsored by the Dongah-ilbo and the Chosun-ilbo between the 1970s and 2001. The average age of both male and female writers increased over time, 82% were college graduates, and 54% were educators. All of the poems referred to nature in some ways, either as the major theme(42%) or in passing reference to some aspect of nature(58%). Onomato-poetic words were used in 71% of the poems; similes and metaphors were expressed in 13% and 51%, respectively; 58% were written from a mediator's point of view; 59% were in the present tense; 78% of the space elements were fixed; and 98% were written in free verse. In conclusion, the poems for children of the Annual Literary Contest should be used in literary education with guidelines for the appreciation, creation, and criticism of poems for children.

  • As a computational approach to literary criticism, the method of character network analysis has attracted attention. The character network is composed of nodes as characters and links as relationship between characters, and has been used to analyze literary works systematically. However, there were limitations in that relationships between characters were so superficial that they could not reflect intimate relationships and quantitative data from the network were not interpreted in depth regarding meaning of literary works. In this study, we propose an improved method of character network analysis through a case study on the play . First, we segmented the character network into a dialogue network focused on speaker-to-listener relationship and an opinion network focused on subject-to-object relationship. We analyzed these networks in various ways and discussed how analysis results could reflect structure and meaning of the work. Through these studies, we strived to find a way of organic and meaningful connection between literary criticism in humanities and network analysis in computer science.

  • In this paper, a style-based approach to translating literary texts is introduced and used. The aim of the study is to work out a stylistic approach to translating literary texts from Arabic into English. The approach proposed in the current study is a combination of four major stylistic approaches, namely linguistic stylistics, literary stylistics, affective stylistics and cognitive stylistics. It has been shown from data analysis that by adopting a style-based approach that can draw from the four stylistic approaches, translators, as special text readers, can easily derive a better understanding and appreciation of texts, in particular literary texts. Further, it has been shown that stylistics as an approach is objective in terms of drawing evidence from the text to support the argument for the important stylistic features and their functions. However, it loses some of its objectivity and becomes dependent and subjective.

  • For this study of the writing performance of verbally gifted elementary and middle school students and its relations to home literary environment, reading attitude, perceived verbal ability, and preference for verbal expression, a sample of 101 verbally gifted children was recruited from classes in a gifted education institute in P metropolitan area. Results of path analyses show that verbally gifted children's home literary environment affects reading attitude and perceived verbal ability; reading attitude and perceived verbal ability affects preference for verbal expression; and preference for verbal expression directly affects writing performance. Results imply that the indirect relations of home literary environment to verbally gifted children's writing performance are an important foundation for developing preference for verbal expression and writing skills.

  • In the past few years, a trend has emerged emphasizing the interdisciplinary relationship between cultural and literary studies, and "memory" has been suggested as the central theme in this trend. According to Aleida and Jan Assmann, "memory" as collective memory (not individual recollection) has various functions and forms, of which communicative memory and cultural memory occupy opposite poles of a central axis. Whereas communicative memory relates to the living past shared among contemporaries, cultural memory relates to "recollected history" rather than factual history. Cultural memory finds transmission through symbolic media such as myths, festivities, and literary works. Literary works preserve critical and living memories as opposed to forgotten memories. In other words, literature should be better read as "criticism and memory" than "imitation and preservation." Works of literature are characterized by a turning away from repetition toward representation-the process of "making present" of what is past.

  • Such is an elective affinity between literary studies and psychoanalysis that the latter sometime serves as a form of literary pedagogy. The affinity mainly consists in their shared concern for language. The signification of language in psychoanalysis is much similar to that of literature. Many of psychoanalytic terms and theoretical tenets bear witness to its dependence clinically on speech phenomena and theoretically on language in general. It is most true of Sigmund Freud, for whom the unconscious is in effect the linguistic unconscious. The Freudian unconscious, compressing and displacing through images and ideas, works as a text for psychoanalysis, which approach has not only paved one of the ways to poststructuralist anti-essentialism but with which literary studies also feel uncanny familiarity. Freudian psychoanalysis, starting empirically from clinical observations, discovers that words exist independent of meanings in the form of things in the unconscious system. Out of the various sensory elements of a word-thing, in psychoanalytic terms, the auditory is central. Now with the auditory imagination cultivated in the clinic, Freud figures out compression and displacement as the chief unconscious works, of which my main argument is that they are based phonetically on heteronym and homonym associations respectively. Compression and displacement work to be masks, which excites Freud's sense of challenge: his is a kind of poststructuralist approach, in the sense that the closed interrelatedness of words without external referents determines the signification in a given situation. But the works of compression and displacement, viewed in auditory terms rather than mapped on to metaphor and metonymy, can provide a new insight for a literary reading of Freud. Pursuing Freud's auditory imagination is not only an attempt to read his writing as literary text rather than for theoretical discussion, but also an experiment with the possibility of literary reading of a theoretical text in the age of after-theory.
