  • When an alloy such as Ni-W is liquid phase sintered, heavy solid W particles sedimentate to the bottom of the container, provided that their volume fraction is less than a critical value. The sintering process evolves typically in two stages, diffusiondriven macrosegregation sedimentation followed by true sedimentation. During macrosegregation sedimentation, the overall solid volume fraction decreases concurrently with elimination of liquid concentration gradient. However, in the second stage of true sedimentation, the average solid volume fraction in the mushy zone increases with time. It is proposed that the true sedimentation results from particle rearrangement for higher packing efficiency.

  • A multisample extraction device was newly designed for efficient extraction of dissolved lipophillic organic compounds from sea water sample. This device allowed extraction of organic compounds from up to 96 sample at a time using 96 multifolder on the principle of solid phase extraction with commercially available octadecyl silane (ODS) cartridges. The recovery yield of the new divice was higher than 90 % while that of conventional liquid-liquid extraction process are only 60 - 70 %. The amount of solvent required for the new device could be reduced to less than 20㎖ per 1ℓ of sample while 1 - 2 ℓ of solvent were used in the conventional liquid-liquid extraction process. The usefulness of this novel method was demonstrated with sea water samples collected from Yellow sea, and the qualitative and quantitative analyses results of the dissolved hydrocarbon showed this method was superior to that of conventional liquid-liquid extraction process in efficiency and reliability.

  • Thermoelectric effects on the temperature changes at the solid- and liquid-phase and its interface were studied by using the unidirectional solidification of $\textrm{Bi}_{2}\textrm{Te}_{3}$. Cooling or heating effects measured with current density. polarity and current passing time were quite different. By separating sole Peltier, Thomson and Joule heat theoretically and experimentally, the Peltier coefficient at the solid/liquid interface of $\textrm{Bi}_{2}\textrm{Te}_{3}$ was -1.10$\times\textrm{10}^{-1}$V, and the Thomson coefficients of solid- and liquid-phase were 7.31\times\textrm{10}^{-4}V/K, 5.77\times\textrm{10}^{-5}V/K, respectively. When D.C. passed from solid-phase to liquid-phase during the crystal growth of $\textrm{Bi}_{2}\textrm{Te}_{3}$ the crystal with more directionality was obtained owing to increase of the temperature gradient in liquid by the Peltier cooling. But in reverse current direction, the crystallinity was not changed significantly.

  • The solid-state electrolyte based on polymer has great attention to develop its ionic conductivity from conventional polymer electrolyte by using wide range of ionic liquids with remarkable processability, flexibility and is applicable to various electrochemical devices including batteries, supercapacitor. Polymer electrolyte based on Ionic liquid with high conductivity, wide electrochemical stability, thermal stability is used in various electronic devices. In this work, we have investigated and developed solid-state electrolyte based on ionic liquid and polymer with enhanced ionic conductivity and electrochemical performances to conduct to various electronic devices including secondary battery. The ionic conductivity of polymer based solid state electrolyte with optimized ratio of the ionic liquid was 1.46-2 S/cm. The ionic liquid and polymer based electrolyte with enhanced ionic conductivity is promising candidates to utilize in wide range of secondary batteries.

  • To know the role of 'the solid compressive pressure to the first solid layer of a cake, $p_d$' in the 'unified theory on solid-liquid separation', we analyzed extremely compressible cake formed with floc for the following three operations with our new concepts. First, the role of $p_d$ was studied in calculating the sediment thickness of floc, and in calculating the cake thickness in cake filtration performed with floc sediment. Second, we calculated the expression procedure using $p_d$. Finally, the influence of $p_d$ on cake thickness in hindered sedimentation, and on the calculation of the procedure of hindered sedimentation $p_d$ was verified. Thus the possibility of application of 'unified theory on solid-liquid separation' and the importance of $p_d$ was verified. Through these processes, new theoretical definitions of the cake filtration, expression and hindered sedimentation was established.

  • Two-dimemsional liquid-solid multiphase fluid dynamics was used to analyze the suspension and mix of liquid fuel and solid particles in fuel tank installed mixing impeller. In this paper, the multiphase flow was modeled using Eulerian Grandular Multiphase model. Experimental measurements of the axial distribution of solids concentration in stirred tanks under 12vol% solid loading were used for comparison with the CFD simulation. Four cases for the impeller location and flow pumping direction also were reviewed under 10.5% solids loading and 700rpm in fuel mix tank. The result of quality of suspension was compared with each cases and the impeller location and operation of mixing fuel tank was established.

  • The growth characteristics and production of color pigments by Monascus strains were investigated during liquid culture, and production of monacolin K in red mold rice was carried out by solid state fermentation. Four different Monascus ruber strains were cultured in potato dextrose yeast extract broth (PDYB) media at $25^{\circ}C$ for 15 days. The high producing strain for red pigment was not corresponded to the strain for yellow pigment. Production of red pigment was high in the strain causing the fast pH change in culture broth. Production of monacolin K in red mold rice by solid state fermentation was influenced by a combination of wet cell weight and spore density in inoculum by liquid culture. Most strains showed the high production of monacolin K in red mold rice, when submerged fermentation was carried out for 5 days as inoculum for solid state fermentation. These results suggest that submerged fermentation period of inoculum have an effect on the production of monacolin K in red mold rice by solid state fermentation, and monacolin K in red mold rice could be increased by controlling the condition of submerged fermentation for inoculum.

  • In Semi-Solid Forging, it is necessary to control the forming variables accurately in order to make near-net-shape products. Generally, the defects of products may occur due to liquid segregation which can be caused by the degree of deformation and condition of friction in Semi-Solid Forging, where the segregation is to be predicted by flow analysis. This paper presents the feasibility of theoretical analysis model using the new yield function which is proposed by Doraivelu et al. to the flow analysis of the semi-solid dendritic Sn-15%Pb alloys instead of adopting the yield criterion of Shima & Oyane which is used by Charreyron and usefulness of the adopted yield function. The distribution of the liquid fraction at various strains in radial direction and the influence of friction are estimated by Upper Bound Method.

  • Condensation of vapor on solid inherently accompanies generation of liquid drops on the solid surface. However, these drops prevent the solid surface from directly contacting the saturated vapor, thus causing thermal resistance. This work investigates a novel mechanism for enhancing the condensation process, in which the condensed drops are rapidly removed from a solid surface by imposing vibration on them. In the experiments, a water drop pendant from a solid surface is vibrated at a fixed frequency while increasing the vibration amplitude. Upon repeating the experiments using various frequencies, it is revealed that there exist resonant frequencies at which the minimum vibration amplitudes inducing a fall-off of the pendant drops are remarkably less than those at neighboring frequencies. These frequencies are supposed to correspond to the resonant frequencies for different modes of drop shape oscillations. They are compared with the resonant frequencies predicted by relatively simple analyses, and the factors causing discrepancy between then are discussed.

  • To obtain high quality component with thixoforming process, it is important that the homegeneous distribution of solid particles without liquid segregation. In closed-die semi-solid forging process, liquid segregation is strongly affected by injection velocity than any other process variables because the material has to travel relatively long distance to fill the cavity through a narrow gate before solidification begins. The optimal injection velocity and die temperature were investigated to fabricate near-net-shape compressor component called Al frame.
