The present paper analyses the radiation effects of mass transfer on steady nonlinear MHD boundary layer flow of a viscous incompressible fluid over a nonlinear porous stretching surface in a porous medium in presence of heat generation. The liquid metal is assumed to be gray, emitting, and absorbing but non-scattering medium. Governing nonlinear partial differential equations are transformed to nonlinear ordinary differential equations by utilizing suitable similarity transformation. The resulting nonlinear ordinary differential equations are solved numerically using Runge-Kutta fourth order method along with shooting technique. Comparison with previously published work is obtained and good agreement is found. The effects of various governing parameters on the liquid metal fluid dimensionless velocity, dimensionless temperature, dimensionless concentration, skin-friction coefficient, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are discussed with the aid of graphs.
An innovative concept for a passive reactor shutdown system, so called self-actuated shutdown system(SASS), is inevitably required for the inherent safety in liquid metal reactor, which is designed with the totally different concept from the usual reactor shutdown system in LWR. SASS using Curie point electromagnet(CPEM) was selected as the passive reactor shutdown system for KALIMER (Korea Advanced Liquid MEtal Reactor). A mock-up of the SASS was designed, fabricated and tested. From the test it was confirmed that the mockup was self-actuated at the Curie point of the temperature sensing material used in the mockup. An articulated control rod was also fabricated and assembled with the CPEM to confirm that the control rod can be inserted into core even when the control rod guide tube is deformed due to earthquake. The operability of SASS in the actual sodium environment should be confirmed in the future. All the design and test data will be applied to the KALIMER design.
The numerical simulation of a 271-rod fuel assembly of nuclear Liquid-Metal Fast Reactor (LMFR) with an infernal blockage has been carried out. Internal blockage within a subassembly is addressed in the safety assessment because it potentially has very serious consequences for the reactor as a whole. Three dimensional calculations were performed using the SABRE4 computer code for the range of blockage positions and sizes to investigate the seriousness and detectability of the internal blockage. The magnitude and location of the peak temperatures together with the temperature distribution at the subassembly exit were calculated in order to look at the potential for damage within the subassembly, and the possibility of blockage detection. The analysis result shows that the 6-subchannel blockage causes large temperature rise within a assembly with practically no change in mixed mean temperature at the assembly exit.
This study deals with the shape optimization of a wire spacer fuel assembly of Liquid Metal Reactors (LMRs). The Response Surface based optimization Method is used as an optimization technique with the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer using Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model as a turbulence closure. Two design variables namely, pitch to fuel rod diameter ratio and lead length to fuel rod diameter ratio are selected. The objective function is defined as a combination of the heat transfer rate and the inverse of friction loss with a weighting factor. Three level full-factorial method is used to determine the training points. In total, nine experiments have been performed numerically and the resulting datas have been analysed for optimization study. Also, a comparison has been made between the optimized surface and the reference one in this study.
Consideration is given to the possibility to use changes in buoyancy as a negative reactivity feedback mechanism during temperature transients in heavy liquid metal fast reactors. It is shown that by the proper use of heavy pellets in the fuel elements, fuel rods could be endowed with a passive self-ejection mechanism and then with a negative feedback. A first estimate of the feasibility of the mechanism is calculated by using a simplified geometry and model. If in addition, a neutron poison pellet is introduced at the bottom of the fuel, then when the fuel element is displaced upward by buoyancy force, the reactivity will be reduced not only by disassembly of the core but also by introducing the neutron poison from the bottom. The use of induced buoyancy opens up the possibility of introducing greater amounts of actinides into the core, as well as providing a palliative solution to the problem of positive coolant temperature reactivity coefficients that could be featured by the heavy liquid metal fast reactors.
A numerical study has been peformed for evaluation of convection schemes for thermal hydraulic analysis in a liquid metal reactor Four convection schemes, HYBRID, QUICK, SMART and HLPA included in the CFX-4 code are considered. The performances of convection schemes are evaluated by applying them to the five test problems. The accuracy, stability and convergence are tested. It is shown that the HYBRID scheme is too diffusive, and the QUICK scheme exhibits overshoots and undershoots, and the SMART scheme shows convergence oscillations, and the HLPA scheme preserves the boundedness without causing convergence oscillations. The accuracies of SMART, QUICK and HLPA schemes are comparable. Thus, the use of HLPA scheme is highly recommended for thermal hydraulic analysis in a liquid metal reactor.
In order to measure non-intrusively velocity profile in liquid metal flow, a modified electromagnetic flowmeter was designed, which was based on electromagnetic tomography technique. Under the assumption that flow is fully-developed, axisymmetric and rectilinear, the velocity profile was reconstructed after the flowmeter equation, the first kind of Fredholm integration equation, was linearized. In reconstruction process Tikhonov regularization method with regularization parameter was used. The reconstructed velocity profile had the nearly same as turbulent flow profile which was approximately represented as log law. In addition, flowmeter output for a fixed magnet rotation angle was linearly proportional to flow rate. When magnet rotation angle was $54^{\circ}$, axisymmetric weight function was nearly uniform so that the flowmeter gives a constant signal for any fully-developed, axisymmetric and rectilinear profile with a constant flow rate.
The effect of Lorentz force(Electromagnetic force) on the liquid metal flow has been investigated. The flow velocity has been calculated by treating the Lorentz force as a source term in the Navier-Stokes equation. The liquid metal flow in the annular duct of an electromagnetic pump was analyzed with the Lorentz force varied.
Pumping liquid metal in nuclear power plant application by conventional centrifugal pumps pose difficulties such as bearing wear out at high temperatures and leak proof sealing of the liquid metal. MHD machine is obtained by replacing solid conducting secondary of conventional motors with ionized gas or liquid metal. It is used for reactor cooling pump because of construction simplicity, perfect sealing and easy operation/maintenance MHD pump is complicated because it includes electromagnetic and hydrodynamic phenomena. The principle of MHD Pumps is described in this paper. We design small laboratory size Flat Linear Induction Pump(FLIP) for transferring sodium.
Core disruptive accidents have been investigated at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI) as part of the work to demonstrate the inherent and ultimate safety of conceptual design of the Korea Advanced Liquid Metal Reactor(KALIMER), a 150 MWe pool- type sodium cooled prototype fast reactor that uses U-Pu-Zr metallic fuel. In this study, a simple method and associated computer program, SCHAMBETA, was developed using a modified Bethe-Tait method to simulate the kinetics and thermodynamic behavior of a homogeneous spherical core over the period of the super-prompt critical power excursion induced by the ramp reactivity insertion. Calculations of the energy release during excursions in the sodium-voided core of the KALIMER were subsequently performed using the SCHAMBETA code for various reactivity insertion rates up to 100 S/s, which has been widely considered to be the upper limit of ramp rates due to fuel compaction. Benchmark calculations were made to compare with the results of more detailed analysis for core meltdown energetics of the oxide fuelled fast reactor. A set of parametric studies were also performed to investigate the sensitivity of the results on the various thermodynamics and reactor parameters.
