An electrostatic inkjet head can be used for manufacturing processes of large display systems and printed circuit boards (PCB) as well as inkjet printers because an electrostatic field provides an external force which can be manipulated to control sizes of droplets. The existing printing methods such as thermal bubble and piezo inkjet heads have shown difficulties to control the ejection of the droplets for printing applications. Thus, the new inkjet head has been proposed using the electrostatic force. A numerical analysis has been performed to calculate the intensity of the electrostatic field using the Maxwell's equation. Also, experiments have been carried out to investigate the droplet movement using a downward capillary with outside diameter of $500{\mu}m$. Gravity, surface tension, and electrostatic force have been analyzed with high voltages for a drop-on-demand ejection. It has been observed that the droplet size decreases and the frequency of the droplet formation and the velocity of the droplet ejection increase with increasing the intensity of the electrostatic field using high-speed camera.

Generation characteristics of electrospray droplets for highly viscous liquid have been investigated by measuring size distributions of droplets emitted from the Taylor cone using glycerol solutions with various conductivities. Because of very small volatility of glycerol, droplet sizes can be measured by an aerodynamic size spectrometer (TSI Aerosizer DSP) with negligible evaporation of droplets. For highly conducting and viscous liquid, the sizes of the droplets electrosprayed from the Taylor cone are found to be relatively insensitive to applied voltages and the electrosprays assisted by the corona discharge call produce monodisperse droplets as long as the corona intensity is not too high. Near the minimum flow rate where a liquid cone is stable, the spray tends to consist of a one -peak monodisperse distribution of drop lets. However, at high flow rates, the spray bifurcates into bimodal distributions, which are consistent with the result of the previous study for less viscous liquids than our liquids. For liquid flow rates (Q) below 1 nl/s, the measured droplet diameters by the aerosizer are in the range of 0.30 to 1.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for the glycerol solutions. The diameters of monodisperse droplets scale approximately with $r^*=Q_$\tau$(Q$\tau$){^1/3}$ where $r^*$ is a characteristic length and $\tau$is the electrical relaxation time of the fluid. However, when compared with several represe ntative scaling laws, the droplet diameters are two to six factors greater than those predicted by the scaling laws. This may be closely related to the combined effect of the much higher viscosity and the electrical charge on the jet breakup of glycerol so solution.
Phase holdup characteristics of relatively large and small bubbles were investigated in a three-phase(gasliquid-solid) fluidized bed of which diameter was 0.105 m(ID) and 2.5 m in height, respectively. Effects of gas(0.01~0.07 m/s) and liquid velocities(0.01~0.07 m/s) and particle size($0.5{\sim}3.0{\times}10^{-3}m$) on the holdups of relatively large and small bubbles were determined. The holdups of two kinds of bubbles in three phase fluidized beds were estimated by means of static pressure drop method with the knowledge of pressure drops corresponding to each kind of bubble, respectively, which were obtained by dynamic gas disengagement method. Dried and filtered air which was regulated by gas regulator, tap water and glass bead of which density was $2500kg/m^3$ were served as a gas, a liquid and a fluidized solid phase, respectively. The two kinds of bubbles in three-phase fluidized beds, relatively large and small bubbles, were effectively detected and distinguished by measuring the pressure drop variation after stopping the gas and liquid flow into the column as a step function: The increase slope of pressure drop with a variation of elapsed time was quite different from each other. It was found that the holdup of relatively large bubbles increased with increasing gas velocity but decreased with liquid velocity. However, the holdup showed a local minimum with a variation of size of fluidized solid particles. The holdup of relatively small bubbles increased with an increase in the gas velocity or solid particle size, while it decreased slightly with an increase in the liquid velocity. The holdups of two kinds of bubbles were well correlated in terms of operating variables within this experimental conditions, respectively.

The influences of recess length of a liquid/liquid swirl coaxial injector on spray characteristics were investigated. It was revealed that the internal impinging phenomenon played an important role in the spray characteristics, such as spray angle and breakup length. Also, as the recess length increased, the mean drop size increased due to the increase of effective film thickness and mixing efficiency increased, but in the case of very deep recess length, the mixing efficiency decreased.

Experiments have been carried out to study the atomisation characteristics of superheated liquid(water) jet injected into the atmosphere through a single-hole nozzle. In present experi-mental range, superheated liquid jet has been observed to be atomised in two-phase effluent type; that is, spray formed by the bubble nucleation in the nozzle. In case of liquid injection through a long nozzle (L/D=29.09), the critical superheat for occurrence of two-phase effluent atomisa-tion can be determined from sudden change of spray angle. Sauter mean diameter of the spray droplets decreases as the degree of superheat increases. For the short nozzle (L/D=7.27), mean diameter increases with the injection pressure, while it decreases for the long nozzle; however for the long nozzle the effect of injection pressure is not significant compared with the short nozzle. For the short nozzle the uniformity of drop size distribution increases with increasing the degree of superheat, but for the long nozzle the effect of superheat on the uniformity is not appreciable.

The spray and acoustic characteristics of a swirl coaxial injector are studied experimentally. The spray and acoustic characteristics of a swirl coaxial injector are investigated according to the injection conditions, such as the pressure drop of the liquid and gas phase, and injector geometries, such as recess length and gap size between the inner and outer injector.
The performance of louver-finned flat-tube radiators for computer CPU liquid cooling were experimentally investigated. In this study, 5 samples of louver-finned flat-tube radiators with different width size (19mm, 24mm), tube hole (1, 9) and pass number (1, 2, 5) were tested in a wind tunnel. The experiments were conducted under the different air velocity ranging from 1 to 5 m/s. The water flow rate through a pass was 1.7 LPM. Inlet temperatures of air and water were $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ respectively. The results showed that the best performance in the 24mm sample considering pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient.

To Characterize the single raindrops as a function of their size we designed the sampling and handling apparatuses. Samplings of single and size- classified raindrops were performed at a height of 20m above the ground level of a Kyoto University building located in Uji, Japan in rain events from middle of July to the end of August, 1999. And PIXE method was applied to the analysis of single raindrops sampled as a function of their size. Diameter change of frozen raindrops by liquid nitrogen did nto affect the size segregation ability of our sampling apparatus. The number of raindrops increases with decreasing drop size. And it is found that the size distribution of raindrops verified depends on the rain events. Application of PIXE analysis to the measurement of single raindrops was very successful. Every element showed a continuous increase in concentration with decreasing raindrop diameter. It seems reasonable to say that our work should be helpful to obtain more detailed information on single raindrops and especially to study on the rainout and washout mechanisms.

Drop size distribution of an air-assisted fuel injector(AAFI) was investigated. Influence of parameters such as ambient air density supply pressure and air-liquid mass ratio(ALR) was examined through both measurement and analysis. The Sauter mean diameter$D_{32}$ varied from 9 to 25$\mu$m throughout all experimental conditions. An empirical correlation for droplet size was obtained. Analytical correlations for predicting $D_{32}$ with respect to operating conditions were also derived through energy consideration and introduction of a simplified model of the from the empirical fitting was adapted to the original equation the proposed correlation in this study matched more closely with measured results. The current correlation exhibited a favorable study matched more closely with measured results. The current correlation exhibited a favorable prediction for $D_{32}$ compared to that by the empirical correlation at selected experimental conditions so that it may be used to predict atomization performance of the AAFI at operating conditions which was not covered in the measurements. After validation the analytical equation was applied to survey the feasible operating conditions for gasoline direct injection application.

A series of experiments were conducted to study the effectiveness of the extinction of a liquid pool fire with two different water atomizing nozzles. Fire source is a small-scale circular stainless steel pan of 120mm in diameter with the fuels of hexane and ethanol. K-type thermocouples were used to measure the flame and fuel temperature along the pool centerline and under fuel surface. A digital camera was used to visualize the process of the fire suppression. The experimental results show that water mist droplet size is l15∼180${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with nozzle A and 130∼190${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with nozzle B. The extinguishing time of pool fire was reduced with the increase of pressure. When water droplets are small, they do not reach the flame base since they may be deflected or evaporated by the fire plume. However, influence of flow rate is more important than droplet size on fire extinction. Among the fire extinction mechanisms, drop of flame temperature is superior to suffocation of $O_2$ concentration.
