Coronary artery disease (CAD) such as angina pectoris and myocardial infarction(MI) have been considered the major cause of death for decaddes . THeir incidence and prevalence are still increasing . Numerous studies have been done on the risk factor analysis of CAD in Western countries. Since the diet in Western countries is different from that in Korea it is difficult to assume that the Korean diet has the same effects as its western counterpeart on the development of CAD . THus the gudidelines for the Western CAD patients can no totally be applied to Koreans. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between diet and CAD in Koreans. Subjects were comprised of patients admitted to the hospital for chest pain with poxxilbe CAD (men 129, women 65) . They were divided into the following three groups according to angiographic results ; angiogrphically normal coronary artery group (control), single vessel disease group(SVD) and multiple vessel disease group (MVD) . Intakes of dietary fatty acids and other nutrients were assessed by the semiquantitative food frequency method. Blood was also obtained from subjects for serum lipid analysis. Serum lipid profiles of men were clearly different form those of women. For men, serum choesterol levels (or LDL or LDL/HDL) seemed to be higher in the MVD group compared to the control and SVD groups, while TG level was significantly higher in the MVD group for women. Both men and women showed significantly higher caloric , fiber and vitamins C and A intakes in the MVD group than in the other two groups. Higher caloric intakes was due to higher intakes of carbohydrate and protein rather than fat intake. In terms of fatty acids intake, there were no significant differences among the three groups . Smoking seemed to have great effect on eating patterns in CAD patients. Smokers and ex-smokers showed significantly higher intakes of most nutrients including individual fatty acids that non-smokers. The results of stepwise regression showed that moderate alcohol intake decreases LDL levels and increases HDL levels and smoking seems to lowe HDL levels in CAD patients.
This study was designed to investigate the effects of 8-week resistance exercise by using dumbell on the body com-position, serum hormone profiles and feeding patterns in young and healthy female students with over 30% of body fat, aged 22 years in Masan, Korea. The subjects were all six, performed successfully the entire exercise-program. Anthropometry, serum lipid and neurohormone profiles of subjects were analyzed at 0, 4 and 8 weeks after exercise. And also their food and nutrient intakes were self-reported by 3-day record and food frequency questionnaire. Triceps skinfold-thickness of the subject students significantly reduced after the exercise to 46% less than before (p < 0.002) . The serum concentrations of leptin, insulin and catecholamine appeared to decrease steadily, but not significantly. Total protein in serum increased significantly (p<0.05), and Na (p<0.005), K (p<0.001) and Fe (p<0.058) concentrations increased remarkably within the normal range. The 8-week resistance exercise tended to induce fiber consumption (p<0.089) of subject students and changed the P/M/S ratio changed into the desirable way from 0.8 : 1 : 1 to 1 : 1 : 1, and that of n-6/n-3 PUPA from 11 : 1 to 6 : 1. After taking exercise, the intake frequency of cookies (p<0.058) and raymeun (p<0.085) decreased, but finally this feeding pattern returned to the way as before even though at marginal significance. Consequently the resistance exercise may induce the desirable changes of body fat and improve serum lipid profiles and feeding patterns in young obese females.
In order to elucidate the patterns of natural oils and fats assimilation by microorganisms, lipases properties of yeast and bacterium strain, Torulopsis candia Y-128 and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus KB-2, which could assimilate palm oil efficiently, were investigated. T candida Y-128 attached palm oil droplets directly, and assimilated unsaturated fatty acid more easily than saturated acids liberated by the action of its lipase. Lipase of A. calcoaceticus KB-2 was extracellular and appeared quickly from the beginning of log phase of growth, whereas lipase of f candida Y-128 appealed intracellular. The lipases of two strains seem to be only enough to utilize the lipid materials for their own growth, without accumulation of lipases in the culture broth. Lipases of the strains have 1 (3-)-positional specificities on triglycerides. The patterns of palm oil assimilation showed that two strains attached droplets of lipid materials directly and split off fatty acids at 1 (3-)-position of triglycerides first, and assimilated the reaction products via fatty acids metabolic pathway.
The purposes of this research were to assess dietary fatty acid patterns and to elucidate the relationship between the serum cholesterol levels and dietary fatty acid patterns, plasma fatty acid compositions, BMI (body mass index), and other lipid profile. The subjects were 151 adults aged 23 to 80 years, selected from the Outpatient Clinic and Cardiova-scular Department of the Seoul Municipal Hospital. Dietary data were obtained using three day food records. Sixteen dietary fatty acids were analyzed using Korean and US nutrient databases. The subjects were divided into three serum cholesterol levels: desirable (< 200 mg/dl, N = 44), borderline-risk ($\geq$ 200 - < 240 mg/dl, N = 35), and high-risk ($\geq$ 240 mg/dl, N = 72) groups. The high-risk group had higher BMI, waist, and waist to hip ratio (WHR) than the desirable and borderline-risk groups. Serum concentrations of triglyceride, LDL cholesterol and LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio were significantly higher in the high-risk group as compared to those in the other two groups. The serum cholesterol levels were highly correlated with BMI (r = 0.435), triglyceride (r = 0.425) and LDL/HDL cholesterol (r = 0.870) ratio. The highest fatty acid intake was from oleic acid (33 - 34% of total fatty acid intakes), which was followed by linoleic acid (27%), palmitic acid (19%), and stearic acid (7%). There was no correlation between the serum cholesterol levels and the dietary fatty acid intakes, polyunsaturateumonounsaturateusaturated fatty acids (P/M/S) and $\omega$6/$\omega$3 ratios. The correlation between plasma fatty acids such as myristic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid and serum cholesterol levels was also weak. The purpose of this study was to compare the nutritional effects of resistant starch, cellulose and pectin on growth rate, metabolic energy and apparent digestibility in rats. Forty eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to six dietary treatments, Rats were fed, ad libitum one of six experimental diets: 5% of resistant starch (RS), 5% of cellulose (CE), 5% of pection(PT), 2.5% resistant starch and 2.5% cellulose(RS+CE), 2.5% resistant starch and 2.5% pectin(RS+PT), and 2.5% cellulose and 2.5% pectin (CE+PT) during 4 weeks. The results obtained were as follows: body weight gain were higher in groups RS and CE, compared with that in the group PT, where other groups such as RS+CE, RS+PT and CE+PT showed no significant differences to the RS group. Food intake and food efficiency into showed the same patterns. Metabolic energy were similar in the RS and CE, and was the lowest the metabolic energy in the group CE+PT was significantly low. Apparent digestibility of protein was significantly higher in the group RS, compared with the groups CE and PT. Apparent digestibility of mixed dietary fiber groups such as the RS+CE, RS+PT and CE+PT group were also higher compared with the group PT. Apparent digestibility of lipid were significantly higher in the groups RS, CE and PT. Apparent digestibility of lipid in the mixed pectin groups such as the RS+PT and CE+PT growth rate, metabolic energy and apparent digestibility of lipid in the mixed pectin groups such as the RS+PT and CE+PT recorded the lowest, while that of the group RS+CE was significantly high. From above results, following was concluded: The growth rate, metabolic energy and apparent digestibility of protein and lipid of group RS were significantly higher in comparision with the group PT, while availability of energy nutrients of group CE was similar to that of the group RS. Also resistant starch fed with pectin(RS+PT) seemed to have increased the growth rate and the apparent digestibility of protein compared with those of the group PT fed with pectin(PT) alone, however RS+PT scemed to have the apparent digestibility of lipid.
For the induction of arthropathy, 5% hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$) was injected for 5 weeks into the intraarticular space of the New Zealand white rabbits to damage articular cartilage. Alginic acid of low molecular weight (2%) made from macromolecular alginate treated with enzyme was administered into articular space at the dose of 5 mg/kg twice a week for 3 and 6 weeks using 1 ml syringe and 26 G needle. Saline was injected for the control. Tissues surrounding the articulation were obtained for the measurements of superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity as a major antioxidant enzyme and malondialdehyde (MDA) as a lipid peroxidation level. Histopathologic examination on the surface of articular cartilage was carried out. Data showed that injection of hydrogen peroxide for 5 weeks had led to the induction of free radical damage and of articular cartilage change as confirmed by microscopic observation. The application of hydrogen peroxide caused a gradual increase in the SODs and MDA. These patterns were similar after 3 and 6 weeks of alginate treatment. Furthermore, microscopic examinations revealed that hydrogen peroxide caused flaking, fibrillation, fissuring, denudation, and hypocellularity in the articular surfaces. In conclusion, lipid peroxidation was demonstrated in the articular cartilage by the administration of hydrogen peroxide in the rabbit model. This lipid peroxidation could be caused by oxygen free radicals. The histologic and enzymatic correlations on lipid peroxidation in the articulation have provided a better understanding of arthropathy. It is possible to take advantage of these findings to evaluate effective alginate dosage more efficiently.

Background: Naringenin and its glycoside naringin are well known citrus flavonoids with several therapeutic benefits. Although the anti-adipogenic effects of naringenin and naringin have been reported previously, the detailed mechanism underlying their anti-adipogenesis effects is poorly understood. Objectives: This study examined the anti-adipogenic effects of naringenin and naringin by determining differential gene expression patterns in these flavonoids-treated 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Methods: Lipid accumulation and triglyceride (TG) content were determined by Oil red O staining and TG assay. Glucose uptake was measured using a 2-[N-(7-Nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazol-4-yl)amino]-2-deoxy-d-glucose fluorescent d-glucose analog. The phosphorylation levels of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and acetyl Co-A carboxylase (ACC) were observed via Western blot analysis. Differential gene expressions in 3T3-L1 adipocytes were evaluated via RNA sequencing analysis. Results: Naringenin and naringin inhibited both lipid accumulation and TG content, increased phosphorylation levels of both AMPK and ACC and decreased the expression level of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (HMGCR) in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. RNA sequencing analysis revealed that 32 up-regulated (> 2-fold) and 17 down-regulated (< 0.6-fold) genes related to lipid metabolism, including Acaca, Fasn, Scd1, Mogat1, Dgat, Lipin1, Cpt1a, and Lepr, were normalized to the control level in naringenin-treated adipocytes. In addition, 25 up-regulated (> 2-fold) and 25 down-regulated (< 0.6-fold) genes related to lipid metabolism, including Acaca, Fasn, Fabp5, Scd1, Srebf1, Hmgcs1, Cpt1c, Lepr, and Lrp1, were normalized to the control level by naringin. Conclusions: The results indicate that naringenin and naringin have anti-adipogenic potentials that are achieved by normalizing the expression levels of lipid metabolism-related genes that were perturbed in differentiated 3T3-L1 cells.
The aims of this study were to investigate and confirm the occurrence and distribution patterns of blood lipid lower agents (BLLAs) in Nakdong river basin (mainstream and its tributaries). 4 (atorvastatin, lovastatin, mevastatin and simvastatin) out of 5 statins and 2 (clofibric acid and zemfibrozil) out of 3 fibrates were detected in 29 sampling sites and simvastatin (>50%) was predominant compound followed by atorvastatin, lovastatin and clofibric acid. The total concentration levels of BLLAs on April, August and November 2009 in surface water samples ranged from ND~25.7 ng/L, ND~18.8 and ND to 38.8 ng/L, respectively. The highest concentration level of BLLAs in the mainstream and tributaries in Nakdong river were Goryeong and Jincheon-cheon, respectively. The sewage treatment plants (STPs) along the river affect the BLLAs levels in river and the BLLAs levels decreased with downstream because of dilution effects.
The intake of fatty acids, and the effects of fatty acid intake patterns on serum lipid concentrations was investigated in 112 postmenopausal women. Dietary intakes of fatty acids were assessed by means of a semi-quantitative food questionnaire with food models and other measuring tools. The intakes of saturated fatty acid(SFA), monounsaturated fatty acid(MFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acid(PUFA) were 10.85g, 11.89g and 12.09g, respectively. The ratios of P/M/S and $\omega$6/$\omega$3 fatty acid were 1.19 : 1.10 : 1 and 6.65 ; 1, respectively. Serum lipid concentrations were adjusted for age, menopausal period, BMI, stress scores, exercise habit and energy intake and the relationship between fatty acid intake and serum lipids was measured using Pearson's correlation coefficient. Serum cholesterol concentration was positively correlated with dietary intake of SFA (p<0.10), MUFA(p<0.05), palmitic acid(p<0.10), stearic acid(p<0.05), oleic aicd(p<0.05), and arachidonic acid(p<0.10). Serumk LDL-cholesterol concentration was positively correlated with MUFA(p<0.10), oleic acid(p<0.10), oleic acid(p<0.10), and arachidonic acid (p<0.10). Serum triglyceride concentration was positively correlated with arachidonic acid(p<0.10). However, serum HDL-cholesterol concentration was not found to be significantly correlated with any fatty acids.
This study was done to investigate whether dietary fats differing in their fatty acid compositions change hepatic mitochondrial lipid composition and thereby change adenine nucleotide translocase activity. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed 5 different wxperimental diets for 6 weeks, which were different in their fatty acid compositions. The dietary fats were beef tallow(BT), olive oil(OO), corn oil(CO), perilla oil(PO) and sardine oil(SO) as a source of saturated fatty acid, oleic acid, n-6 linoleic acid, n-3 $\alpha$-linolenic acid and n-3 eiocosapentaenoic acid+docosahexaenoic acid respectively. Body weight of PO group was significantly higher than that of either BT or SO group. This increase in body weight of PO group was due to the increase of food intake. Although there was no difference in liver weight, % liver weight per body weight of SO group was significantly higher than BT and OO groups. Analysis of mitochondrial lipid composition showed that dietary oils differing their fatty acid compositions altered mitochondrial fatty acid patterns, especially n-6/n-3 ratio, cholesterol/phospholipid ratio and phopsholipid composition. The n-6/n-3 ratio was highest in CO group but lowest in SO group whereas the ratio of Chol/PL was highest in SO group but lowest in CO group. Such changes in mitochondrial lipids did not lead to a significant alteration in the activities of adenine nucleotide translocase, which is embedded in mitochodrial inner membrane.
