  • Natto is a Japanese traditional food made from whole soybeans by the fermentation of Bacillus natto. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Natto mucilage on lipid metabolism in rats. The levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride in serum of rats fed Natto mucilage diets were lower than those in control rats, but serum HDL-cholesterol and phospholipid were higher than those in control rats. The results indicate that Natto mucilage may have more beneficial roles in lipid metablism because it decreased serum cholesterol and increased bilirubin excretion.

  • The ultrastructure and storage reserves of the Capsicum annuum seeds were studied in order to identify structure and to localize storage components in the endosperm using light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The seed coat was composed of one cell layer which contained a large number of lipid bodies, while most of the endosperm cells did not showed many lipid bodies. During seed maturation, the endosperm cells were continuously degenerated by the autophagy. Various types of plastids were also distinguished in the endosperm cells. They contained starch grains surrounded by electron-dense tiny particles, plastoglobuli, and vasicular bodies.

  • The effect of lxeris sonchifolia H.(godulbaegi) on lipid metabolism were studied in S. D. rats. Twenty four rats were divided into four groups and fed diets containing 1 % cholesterol, 0.25% sodium cholate, 10% coconut oil and 5% lard(control group)f for 3 weeks. An experimental diet group was added with 5% leaf(PL group) or root powder(PR group) of godulbaegi. The lipid components and enzyme activites of serum and liver were assayed. The concentrations of total cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid were significantly lower in the PL and PR groups than in the control group. The levels of HDL-cholesterol were not significant but showed somewhat higher values in the PL and PR groups compaired with the control. The activities of glutamic oxaloacetic transminase(GPT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase(GPT) were significantly lower in the PL and PR groups compaired with the control. In view of these results Godulbaegi is expected to be an effective food in preventing and improving the hyperlipidemic state.

  • The Fucales plants have very homogenous taxonomic characteristics at order level, but show many morphological variatations at species or subspecies levels. This study is one of the serial works to obtain more taxonomic data than morphotaxonomic ones and to clarify the taxonomic ranks and characteristics of Korean Fucales plants through physiological and biochemical analyses. Total lipid compositions of Korean Fucales plants were analyzed by the 3-dimensional TLC method. Major components of phospholipids (PA, PC, PG, PE, DPG, LPE, LPC), neutral fat TG and sterols were commonly contained in each species. Unknown lipids X1, X2 and X3 were contained in genus Sargassum, but Hizikia was lacking X3 and Myagropsis was lacking both X2 and X3. The latter contained unique X8. From the view-point of the phylogeny of lipid metabolism, Sargassum might be more closely related to Hizikia than to Myagropsis. A variant of S. patens from Seongsan showed minute metabolic difference from that of the typical plant; but a variant of S. serratifolium did not show any significant difference from that of the typical plant.

  • The lipid composition of thylakoid membranes was compared between mesophyll and bundle sheath chloroplasts of maize. According to mild-denaturing gel electrophoresis, mesophyll thylakoids contained both PS I complex and PS II light-harvesting chlorophyll-protein complex(LHCP), while those of bundle sheath cells contained mainly PS I complex. The amount of lipids per mg chlorophyll was higher in bundle sheath thylakoids than in mesophyll. The major polar lipid classes were monogalactosyldiacylglycerol(MGDG), digalactosyldiacylglycreol, sulfolipid and phosphatidylglycerol (PG) in both tissues. Linolenic acid(18 : 3), linoleic acid(18 : 2) and palmitic acid(16 : 0) were the main fatty acyl components, with higher ratio of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids in bundle sheath thylakoids, suggesting these membranes are more fluid. The most striking difference in lipid composition between the two kinds of tissues was the practical absence of trans- 3-hexadecenoic acid(16 : 1t) in PG of bundle sheath thylakoids. This fatty acid is known to be involved in the association of LHCP as oligomeric form. More than 80% of MGDG molecular species was 18 : 3, 18 : 3, demonstrating that maize is a typical 18 : 3 plant. Therefore, the possibility of the functional relationships between the lamella structure, and thus the distribution of photosystems, and MGDG molecular species was excluded.

  • The effect of Artemisia princeps var orientalis(mugwort) and Circium japonicum var ussuriense (Unggungqui) on lipid metabolism was examined . Thirty rats of 5 experimental groups were fed with a diet containing 1% cholesterol and 0.25% sodium cholate(control diet) and 5% plant powder or its water soluble extract(experimental diet) for 4 weeks. The activity of enzymes related to liver function, lipid components of liver and principle organs, and fecal steroids were assayed. The activity of enzymes was significantly lower in the unggungqui and mugwort powder diet group than in control. Liver total cholesterol , free cholesterol, and triglyceride levels were significantly lower in Unggungqui powder diet groups that in the control. The concentrations of total cholesterol , triglyceride and phospholipid in heart and kidney were comparatively low in the Unggungqui powder diet groups. In each plant powder diet group, the values of serum bile acid were significantly lowe ran the fecal steroid excretion was higher than in the control and the extract diet groups.

  • The present study was designed to analyze the lipid and fatty acid compositions of ark shell, Anadara broughtonii. The crude lipid was extracted by Bligh and Dyer's method, and then fractionated by TLC and quantitatively analyzed by TLC scanner. Lipid extracted from ark shell was fractionated into neutral and polar lipid by column chromatography with silicic acid. The fatty acid composition of lipid fractions were determined by gas liquid chromatography. Total lipid content of ark shell was 0.83% base on wet weight. The content of unsaponifiable matter was 20.19%, and iodine value was 156.13. The main components of total lipids were triglyceride, diglyceride, hydrocarbon, and sterol ester. The fatty acid composition of total lipid chiefly consisted of $C_{17 : 0}$, $C_{16 : 0}$, $C_{18 : 1}$ and $CT_{16 : 1}$. The main fatty acids of neutral lipid were $C_{16 : 0}$, $C_{18 : 1}$, $C_{22 : 1}$, $C_{18 : 0}$ and $C_{16 : 1}$. The major fatty acids of polar lipid were $C_{16 : 0}$, $C_{18 : 2}$, $C_{20 : 5}$ and $C_{22 : 6}$. In total lipid fractionation, saturated acid contents were high in all (SA>MA> PA), in neutral lipid fractionation, menoenoic acid contents were high in all (MA > SA> PA), and in polar lipid fractionation, saturated acid con-tents were high in all (SA> PA> MA).

  • This study was to evaluate the biological activity of flavor components extracted from E. ciliata and E. splendens in order to survey the possibility applicable to tobacco and food industry. Flavor components were extracted with dividing into three parts; essential oil, absolute, oleoresin. In the nonenzymatic lipid peroxidation system, the inhibition rate($\%$) of essential oil were $67.3\;\pm\;20.7\%,\;58.1\;\pm\;19.3\%$ at the concentration of 50 ${\mu}g/mL$ of E. ciliata and E. splendens, respectively. The inhibition rate($\%$) of the oleoresin in E. ciliata was higher than one in E. splendens. In the enzymatic lipid peroxidation system, the inhibition rate($\%$) of essential oil and oleoresin was$14.28\;\pm\;2.38\%,\;and\;65.93\;\pm\;0.01\%,\;and\;was\;22.58\;\pm\;2.84\%\;and\;40.73\;pm\;6.04\%$. The oleoresin of two species were showed above $90\%$ of the inhibition rate($90\%$) against autooxidative lipid peroxidation system. $EC_{50}$ values in neutral red uptake assays 24 h of exposure times were $23.3\;{\mu}g/mL,\;341.0\;{\mu}g/mL\;and\;17.2\;{\mu}g/mL$ in essential oil, absolute and oleoresin from E. ciliata respectively, and were $46.4\;{\mu}g/mL,\;681.7\;{\mu}g/mL\;17.6\;{\mu}g/mL$ in three extractions of E. splendens. Oleoresin of two species showed high rate in the cytotoxic effect by neutral red uptake assay. Absolute and oleoresin did not show antibiotic and mutagenic activity. On the contrary, essential oil with over 500 ug/plate showed antibiotic and mutagenic activity in Ames test. Essential oil and oleoresin have a prolongating effect the ciliostasis of rat trachea. This results indicate that flavor components extracted from E. ciliata and E. splendens can be considered to be toxicological safe and to be the possibility applicable the cigarette, food and drug industry as a flavor for expectoration.

  • The present study was undertaken to elucidate the effects of ginseng components on rat lens aldose reductase activity. Ginseng total saponin (GTS) exhibited inhibitory activities on rat lens aldose reductase in a dose-dependent manner. Among ginsenosides, Rf and Rgl showed potent inhibitory activities on rat lens aldose reductase. Lipid soluble fraction also inhibited rat lens aldose reductase activities. These data suggest that ginseng components inhibit rat lens aldose reductase activity in vitro.
