  • In this paper, the results of evaluation on the member forces in the virtual subsea tunnel lining segments and optimal thickness of the segment with changes in depth were presented. To evaluate member forces on the hypothetical subsea tunnelling cases were developed and the segmental lining member forces were calculated by performing structural analysis using the 2-Ring Beam model. Through a preliminary reinforcement design review of the cross-section using calculated member force, optimal reinforcement design was selected. Based on the results, the variations of member forces with construction conditions such as the cover depth and the hydraulic pressure are presented. In addition, optimum segment lining designs were developed for various tunnelling conditions.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on the effect of segment assembly characteristics on the TBM segmental lining member section forces. Analyses have been carried out through the two-ring beam finite element model by Midas civil 2012+. TBM segment lining member forces are determined by various joint characteristics. In this study, the segmental member forces were investigated with various joint number and orientation at fixed values of joint stiffness, ground spring parameters. The numerical results were used to identify trends of the member forces in the tunnel lining with the segment assembly characteristics.

  • This paper concerns a study of a knowledge-based NATM tunnel lining design for subsea tunnels. Concept for tunnel automation designing system, the development of Artificial Neural Network based technology of the tunnel design system, the learning process and verification of the technology forecasting member forces were described. The design system is the series of process which can predict segmental lining member forces by ANN(artificial neural network system), analyze suitable section for the designated ground, construction and tunnel conditions using a FEM(finite element analysis). The lining member forces are predicted based on the ANN quickly and it helps designers determine its segmental lining dimension easily.

  • This paper presents the results of a three-dimensional numerical investigation into the effect of new tunnel construction on structural performance of existing tunnel lining. A three-dimensional finite difference model, capable of modelling the tunnel construction process, was adopted to perform a parametric study on the spatial variation of new tunnel location with respect to the existing tunnel with emphasis on the plan crossing angle of the new tunnel with respect to the existing tunnel and the vertical elevation of the new tunnel with respect to the existing one. The results of the analyses were arranged so that the effect of new tunnel construction on the lining member forces and stresses of the existing tunnel can be identified. The results indicate that when a new tunnel underpasses an existing tunnel, the new tunnel construction imposes greater impact on the existing tunnel lining when the two tunnels cross at an acute angle. Also shown are that the critical plan crossing angle of the new tunnel that would impose greater impact on the existing tunnel depends on the relative vertical location of the new tunnel with respect to the existing one, and that the overpassing new tunnel construction scenario is more critical than the underpassing scenario in view of the existing tunnel lining stability. Practical implications of the findings are discussed.

  • This paper concerns the development of an optimized NATM secondary lining design system for a subsea tunnel. The subsea tunnel is normally laid down under the sea water and submarine ground which consists of soil or rock. The design system is the series of process which can predict lining member forces by ANN (artificial neural network system), analyze suitable section for the designated ground, construction and tunnel conditions. Finally, this lining design system aims to be connected for designing the subsea tunnel automatically. The lining member forces are predicted based on the ANN which was calculated by a FEM (finite element analysis) and it helps designers determine its lining dimension easily without any further FEM calculations.

  • The segment lining design for shield tunnel is generally carried out by using the beam-spring model and the induced member forces from the model are strongly influenced by the components of the model such as imposed load, coefficient of subgrade reaction, location of segment joint and its stiffness. The structural models and stiffness of its connection part found used in abroad design cases is usually obtained as it is for the domestic design of segment of shield tunnel. Those models and stiffness in existing design cases are conventionally applied to a new tunnel design without any suitability review for the project. In this study, the application method of base components of the model such as the coefficient of subgrade reaction and modelling method to the segment lining design was suggested by carrying out the comparative study of the base elements for the member forces estimation of segment lining of shield tunnel.

  • A concrete lining of NATM tunnel is the final product of a process that involves planning and evaluation of user needs, geotechnical investigations, analysis of ground-lining interaction, construction, and observations and modifications during construction. The designer must consider the lining in context of the many function, construction, and geotechnical requirements. Also, the loss of supporting capacity of shotcrete lining due to poor rock qualities and shotcrete erosion must be considered. The values, shapes, and estimating methods of rock load and water pressure are very different with every designers. Estimating methods of rock loads used in the design of NATM tunnel concrete lining are investigated. Structural analyses are done in various load combinations, and the member forces(moment, axial force and shear force) are compared. The adequate load combination of rock load and water pressure is proposed.

  • The concrete structural design in domestic has based on the allowable stress design (ASD) method and ultimate strength design (USD) method. Recently limit state design (LSD) method has issued and attempted to adopt in geotechnical design. Because ASD method and USD method have restriction in economic design. In this study, the generated member forces were calculated about high strength concrete segment lining based on japanese LSD code. And it compared with domestic USD code for identifying the economic design possibility of LSD and domestic applicability. In analysis results, the aspect of moment had generated similarly each other but the member forces of japanese LSD code were decreased (26.0% of moment and 26.7% of shear force) comparing with USD method. For that reason, possibility of economic segment design with stable condition were identified.

  • In impermeable ground, water pressure is applied due to discontinuity such as joint or fissure. Therefore, water pressure should be considered in design regardless of ground condition. However, when the shape of segmental lining is circular, water pressure may reduce the lining member force, so it is important to define the assumption and the concept of design in case of high water pressure. This paper presents the concepts of design of the lining of shield tunnel at high water pressure and in impermeable ground condition. In addition, the member forces in various load conditions were compared in this study. (elastic equation, closed form solutions, beam-spring model).
