  • The feasibility of fly ash was evaluated as an alternative liner material to the conventional clay liner of landfills through modeling and laboratory experiments. In order to consider the effect of unsaturation on water flow through the liner, analyses were made to compare flow characteristics in saturated liner with that of unsaturated one. Contaminant migration characteristics in liners were investigated by batch experiment and modeling, in which phenol was employed as a model was solved by numerical techniques of finite difference method and predictor-corrector method to deal with high non-linearity. Sequential method was used to handle the system of differential equations. Results show that the alternative liner material is more capable of cutting off water flow in unsaturated condition and in preventing phenol from passing through it. It can be seen that, under the flow conditions considered in this study, the conventional saturation approach underestimates the amount of water passing through the liner and doers the cut-off capability against phenol significantly.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the marginal leakage of resin liner which was used as a liner to amalgam restoration. Control group composed of no liner group, copalite group and experimental group composed of All-bond 2, Vitrebond, Superbond D-liner applied groups were evaluated. Cl.V preparation with a size of $3{\times}2{\times}1.5mm$ on 70 extracted primary molars were made and applied appropriate liners for each groups. After amalgam filling and polishing, polished specimens underwent temperature changed from $5^{\circ}C\;to\;55^{\circ}C$ a thousand times. After thermocycling, specimens were placed in 2% methylene blue dye solution for 72 hours in an incubator set at $37^{\circ}C$. The teeth were sectioned buccolingually and the degree of dye penetration was observed with a spectroscopy. (${\times}30$) The following results were obtained. 1. Vitrebond, All-bond 2, Superbond D-liner group exhibited a statistically significant lower degree of dye penetration than no liner and copalite group. (Kruskal-Wallis analysis, P<0.05) 2. No liner group and copalite group exhibited a similar degree of dye penetration. (Mann-Whitney analysis, P>0.05) 3. All-bond 2 group exhibited a statistically significant lower degree of dye penetration than Vitrebond group, (Mann-Whitney analysis, P<0.05) Superbond D-liner group also exhibited a lower degree of dye penetration than Vitrebond group but was statistically insignificant. (Mann-Whitney analysis, P>0.05)

  • Purpose: Physical and chemical properties of gold is most suitable to be restored of teeth to its original state. Recently zirconia was used instead of gold because of esthetical and intimacy of human body. Because of high strength and high abrasion resistance of zirconia, all zirconia artificial tooth lead to wear the original tooth of opposite site. To preserve this original tooth, zirconia artificial tooth covered with dental ceramic glass was used. When joining the zirconia core and dental ceramic glass, difference of their thermal expansion coefficient and wetting ability is generated the residual stress at interface lead to crack. In order to solve this problem, intermediate layer what is called zir-liner was imported to decrease the residual stress and increase the bonding strength. Methods: In this study, to identify the optimum conditions for manufacturing process, various methods to rough the surface of zirconia core were adopted, and vary the thickness of interlayer, and analyzed bond strength. Results: Bond strength of sanding specimens group showed higher than that of non-sanding specimens group, and once applied intermediate layer with sanding specimens showed highest bond strength with 28 MPa. SEM photomicrographs of zirconia cores fired at $1500^{\circ}C$ showed parallel straight lines in sanding and pockmarked surface in blasting surfaces as abrasion traces. Observation of the destruction section after shear test by SEM were carried out. Liner applied non-sanding group and non-liner applied sanding group all showed interfacial crack. Sandblasting group with non-liner showed remained dental ceramic glass on the surface of zirconia. Sandblasting group with once applied liner showed partially remained liner and dental ceramic glass on the surface of zirconia. XRD analysis revealed that sandblasting group showed higher monoclinic peaks than other specimens group and this result was due to the high collision energy for stress induced phase transformation. Conclusions: A study on the improvement of bonding strength between zirconia and dental ceramic glass steadily carried out for the future to practical use.

  • A study was conducted to improve the adhesion of propellant, liner, and insulation. Insulation was shown to be more advantageous in improving the adhesion when a barrier coat was applied compared to a bare insulation layer. It was confirmed that the adhesion strength between the insulation and the propellant improves as the thickness of the liner coating increases. The liner was cured for 24 h. If the liner is cured for a long time, it will adversely affect adhesion. Adhesion is also improved when a bonding agent is applied. As the bonding agent content increases, the adhesion improves. There is a change in the adhesive strength depending on the type of bonding agent used. HX-868 shows slightly more improved adhesion than HX-752.

  • Seaweed waste(SWW) was used to improve the liner effect in recycling of dredged soil as the landfill liner. It was found that the compressive strength became somewhat lower when SWW was added than that was when Ordinary Port-land Cement(OPC) only was added. The permeability coefficient, however, became lower in this case which showed the lowest permeability coefficient when the addition of SWW was one percent. Hence, to comply with the regulations for the compression strength and permeability coefficient of landfill liner, the addition of OPC should be over eight percent and that of seaweed waste one percent. The results of leaching test showed that the solidified material was not against the laws of waste control, so it is possible to use as the landfill liner and to expect sufficient economic effects because wastes such as dredged soil and seaweed can be recycled.

  • Engine power cylinder parts are faced with more severe wear and friction environment. For instance, emission gas recirculation (EGR), one of the most valid technologies related to emission legislation, is known to accelerate wear of piston ring and cylinder liner. Therefore, advanced materials and surface treatments have been developed and adopted successively so that a need exists for an accurate and repeatable friction and wear bench test for various combination of piston ring and cylinder liner that more closely relates to engine test result. This paper introduces accelerative bench wear test method for piston ring and cylinder liner, presents the experimental result of friction and wear properties of piston ring surface treatments that noticed in substitution for hard chrome plating.

  • Development of an effective liner by utilization of the tailings frm the Imcheon mine and polymer has been tried. The tailings piled in the Imcheon mine, whose true specific gravity is about 2.86, are composed mainly of quartz, alkali-feldspar, muscovite and pyrite, and mostly (93.7% in volume) coarser than sand grain size (50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). Strength, leaching and permeability tests have been performed on the test specimens of polymer concrete manufactured with various mixing proportions of tailings, unsaturated polyester resins(UPR), calcium carbonates, stone powder sludges and granite soils. Polymer concrete specimens with stone powder sludges or granite soils as fillers and aggregates indicate 2.5 to 3 fold higher flexural and compressive strengths and lower permeabilities than those with calcium carbonates, which shows their usability as a waterproof liner. Also, the polymer concrete liner with stone powder sludge fillers is more advisable in aspects of utilization of waste sludges than that with other fillers.

  • In this study, the viscosity of carbon black filled HTPB liner, mechanical properties and bonding force between propellant and liner were investigated. It is difficult to apply carbon black filled HTPB liner to the motor case in using a horizontal centrifugal casting because of its high viscosity. This problem is solved as a ageing premix at $60^{\circ}C$. The viscosity of premix is drastically decreased from 464 to 200 poise after 6days ageing.

  • One of the most significant problems in the processing of composite materials is residual stress. The high residual stress may cause cracking in the matrix without external loads and degrade the integrity of composite structures. In this study, thermo-viscoelastic residual stresses occurred in an aluminum liner-inserted polymer composite cylinder are investigated. This type of the structure is used for rocket fuselage due to the convenience to attach payloads and equipment to the metal liner by machining. The time and degree of cure dependent thermo-viscoelastic constitutive equations are developed and coupled with a thermo-chemical process model. These equations are solved with the finite element method to predict the residual stresses in the composite cylinder and also in the interface between the liner and the composite during cure.

  • Engine visualization is the most important process to develop the new engine. But this step has a major difficulty that is almost impossible to access the engine on running. Therefore, little indication from the experimental and analytical results has been so far. This work has conducted the important issue of developing a quartz liner. And it has given us good qualitative and quantitative results of temperature and stress fields in the quartz cylinder by considering forced convection of outside quartz liner, thickness of the quartz liner and preheating effect to operate quartz engine safely.
