In this paper, we present an efficient numerical method for multiphase image segmentation using a multiphase-field model. The method combines the vector-valued Allen-Cahn phase-field equation with initial data fitting terms containing prescribed interface width and fidelity constants. An efficient numerical solution is achieved using the recently developed hybrid operator splitting method for the vector-valued Allen-Cahn phase-field equation. We split the modified vector-valued Allen-Cahn equation into a nonlinear equation and a linear diffusion equation with a source term. The linear diffusion equation is discretized using an implicit scheme and the resulting implicit discrete system of equations is solved by a multigrid method. The nonlinear equation is solved semi-analytically using a closed-form solution. And by treating the source term of the linear diffusion equation explicitly, we solve the modified vector-valued Allen-Cahn equation in a decoupled way. By decoupling the governing equation, we can speed up the segmentation process with multiple phases. We perform some characteristic numerical experiments for multiphase image segmentation.

This paper describes the construction of a circular polariscope. Generally, a circular polariscope contains four optical elements and a light source. The first element following the light source is called the linear polarizer. It converts the ordinary light into plane-polarized light. The second element is a quarter wave plate which converts the plane-polarized light into circularly polarized light. Following the quarter wave plate, a specimen made of transparent photoelastic material is located in a loading device. The second quarter wave plate is set and the last element is the analyzer. These polarizing elements, two quarter wave plates and two linear polarizing filters, were purchased from the USA. Frames and other structures for holding polarizing filters were machined and assembled to be rotated. Light box, which includes four incandescent lamps and two sodium-vapor lamps, was made. In order to proof the function of the newly built polariscope, Tardy compensation test was applied to a rectangular shaped specimen made of poly-carbonate material (PSM 1). The error of the fringe constant, which was measured by the newly built polariscope, was within 4.4 percent compared to the standard value of this material. It is possible to make a good quality of polariscope if accurate polarizing filters will be used.

This study quantitatively evaluated the source term of a linear accelerator according to target thickness for a 6-20 MeV electron beam using MCNP6. The elements of the target were tungsten and copper, and a composite target and single target were simulated by setting different thickness parameters depending on energy. The accumulation of energy generated through interaction with the collided target was evaluated at 0.1-mm intervals, and F6 tally was used. The results indicated that less than 3% reference error was maintained according to the MCNP recommendations. At 6, 8, 10, 15, 18, and 20 MeV, the energy accumulation peaks identified for each target were 0.3 mm in tungsten, 1.3 mm in copper, 1.5 mm in copper, 0.5 mm in tungsten, 0.5 mm in tungsten, and 0.5 mm in tungsten. For 8 and 10 MeV in a single target consisting only of copper, the movement of electrons was confirmed at the end of the target, and the proportion of escaped electrons was 0.00011% and 0.00181%, respectively.
The intensity of x-ray or gamma-ray is attenuated according to density and thickness of the transmitted medium. In this study, by using this principle, on-line real-time radiometric system was developed using a 128 channels linear array of solid state detectors to measure wall thickness of insulated piping system. This system uses a Ir-192 as a gamma ray source and detector is composed of BGO scintillator and photodiode. Ir-192 gamma ray source and linear detector array mounted on a computer controlled robotic crawler. The Ir-192 gamma ray source is located on one side of the piping components and the detector array on the other side. The individual detectors of the detector array measure the intensity of the gamma rays after passing through the walls and the insulation of the piping component under measurement. The output of the detector array is amplified by amplifier and transmitted to the computer. This system collects and analyses the data from the detector array in real-time. The maximum measurable length of pipe is 120cm/mm. in the case of 1mm scanning interval.
A linear compressor generates pulsating pressure and oscillating flow in a cryocooler such as Stirling cryocooler and pulse tube refrigerator. It is driven by AC power source and designed to operate at resonance of piston motion. The driving voltage level is determined by electric parameters of resistance, inductance and thrust constant of linear motor. From voltage equation on linear motor, the power factor of driving power is inherently less than 1. The phase difference between voltage and current of supplied power can be zero using capacitor and this can minimize a supply voltage level. Especially, the linear compressor of kW class requires high voltage and thus can cause a difficulty in selecting power supply unit due to limitation of voltage level. The capacitor in driving electric circuit is useful to settle this problem. In this study, the electric circuit of linear compressor is analytically investigated with assumption of mechanical resonance. The electric parameters of commercial linear motor are used in the analysis. The effects of capacitor on driving voltage level and power factor are investigated. From analytic results, it is shown that the voltage level can be mimized with using capacitor in driving electric circuit.

The objective of this research is estimating the location of interested sound source by using the similarity between a beamformer output in time domain and the candidate signal. The waveform of beamformer output at the location of sound source is similar with the waveform emitted by that source. To estimate the location of sound source by using this feature, we define quantified similarity between candidate signal and beamformer output. The candidate signal describes the signal which is generated by interested source. In this paper, similarity is defined by four methods. The two methods use time vector comparison, and the other two methods use time-frequency map or linear prediction coefficients. To figure out the results and performance of localization by using similarities, we demonstrate two conditions. The one is when two pure tone sources exist and the other condition is when several bird sounds exist. As a consequence, inner product with two time-vectors and structural similarity with spectrograms can estimate the locations of interest sound source.
In the theory of source-driven abyssal circulation, the forcing is usually assumed to be steady source (deep-water formation). In many cases, however, the deep-water formation occurs instantaneously and it is not clear whether the theory can be applied well in this case. An attempt is made to resolve this problem by using a simple reduced gravity model. The model basin has large depth change compared for its size, like the East Sea, such that isobaths nearly coincide with geostrophic contours. Deep-water is formed every year impulsively and flows into the model basin through the boundary. It is found that the circulation driven by the impulsive source is generally the same as that driven by a steady source except that the former has a seasonal fluctuation associated with unsteadiness of forcing. The magnitudes of both the annual average and seasonal fluctuations increase with the rate of deep-water formation. The problem can be approximated to that of linear diffusion of momentum with boundary flux, which well demonstrates the essential feature of abyssal circulation spun-up by periodic impulsive source. Although the model greatly idealizes the real situation, it suggests that abyssal circulation can be driven by a periodic impulsive source in the East Sea.
The CNTFET, which is widely recognized as a next-generation semiconductor, has a structure that can improve performance by positioning CNTs between the source and drain of a conventional MOSFET. However, positioning CNTs increases the complexity of a CNTFET's structure, and the process variation changes the complex structure into various shapes; so, when CNTFET device performance is analyzed, it requires more computation than that of a conventional MOSFET. These problems greatly increase the simulation time necessary for the analysis, and sometimes that analysis cannot be performed using an existing tool; they are therefore important obstacles to designing a circuit using a CNTFET. In this study, we will show that the existing Linear Programming methodology can be utilized to solve the long simulation time problem and discuss the effect of the suggested method in detail. Simulation results show that the Linear Programming method can reduce the number of simulation about 2.5 times when the maximum number of CNT is changed from 6 to 12.

A push pull hood system is frequently applied to control contaminants evaporated from an open surface tank. Efficiency of push pull hood system is affected by various parameters, such as, cross draft, vessel shapes, tank surface area, liquid temperature. A previous work assisted by flow visualization technique qualitatively showed that a strong cross draft blown from the pull hood to push slot could destroy a stable wall-jet on the surface of tank, resulting in the abrupt escape of smoke from the surface. In this study, the tracer gas method was applied to determine the effect of cross-draft on the capture efficiency qualitatively. A new concept of capture efficiency was introduced, that is, linear efficiency. This can be determined by measuring the mass of tracer gas in the duct of pull hood while the linear tracer source is in between push slot and pull hood. By traversing the linear tracer source from the push slot to the pull hood, it can be found where the contaminant is escaped from the tank. Total capture efficiency can be determined by averaging the linear efficiencies. Under the condition of cross-draft velocities of 0, 0.4, 0.75, 1.05 and 1.47m/s, total capture efficiencies were measured as 97.6, 95.4, 94.6, 92.7 and 70.5% respectively. The abrupt reduction of efficiency with cross-draft velocity of 1.47m/s was due to the destruction of tank surface wall-jet by the counter-current cross-draft. The same phenomenon was observed in the previous flow visualization study. As an alternative to overcome this abrupt efficiency drop, the 20% increase of hood flow rates was tested, resulting in 20% efficiency increase.
In this paper, we propose a linear tapered slot rectifying antenna for a portable UHF-band RFID system. Since the proposed rectifying antenna does not use a dielectric substrate, the planar antenna is implemented with a thin metal thickness. The rectifier circuit converts input RF power into output DC voltage using a voltage doubler circuit based on two anti-parallel schottky diodes. The rectifying antenna is integrated by the voltage doubler circuit into a linear tapered slot antenna. For conjugate impedance matching of the rectifying circuit and the linear tapered slot antenna, the source-pull method was utilized by adjusting the angle of the tapered slot and the length of the antenna feed line. The proposed antenna prototype has been verified with the electrical and radiation characteristics through RF-DC conversion and far-field radiation test in open space measurement environment. Finally, the proposed antenna is realized to 0.23-wavelength (75 mm) and 0.18-wavelength (60 mm) at 915 MHz center frequency.
