  • The human voice is a convenient method of information transfer between different objects such as between men, men and machine, between machines. The development of information and communication technology, the voice has been able to transfer farther than before. The way to communicate, it is to convert the voice to another form, transmit it, and then reconvert it back to sound. In such a communication process, a vocoder is a method of converting and re-converting a voice and sound. The CELP (Code-Excited Linear Prediction) type vocoder, one of the voice codecs, is adapted as a standard codec since it provides high quality sound even though its transmission speed is relatively low. The EVRC (Enhanced Variable Rate CODEC) and QCELP (Qualcomm Code-Excited Linear Prediction), variable bit rate vocoders, are used for mobile phones in 3G environment. For the real-time implementation of a vocoder, the reduction of sound quality is a typical problem. To improve the sound quality, that is important to know the size and shape of noise. In the existing sound quality improvement method, the voice activated is detected or used, or statistical methods are used by the large mount of data. However, there is a disadvantage in that no noise can be detected, when there is a continuous signal or when a change in noise is large. This paper focused on finding a better way to decrease the reduction of sound quality in lower bit transmission environments. Based on simulation results, this study proposed a preprocessor application that estimates the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) using the spectral SNR estimation method. The SNR estimation method adopted the IMBE (Improved Multi-Band Excitation) instead of using the SNR, which is a continuous speech signal. Finally, this application improves the quality of the vocoder by enhancing sound quality adaptively.

  • Estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) is an algorithm that estimates the angle of a signal arriving at an array antenna using the shift invariance property of an array antenna. ESPRIT offers the good trade-off between performance and complexity. However, the ESPRIT algorithm still requires high-complexity operations such as covariance matrix and eigenvalue decomposition, so implementation with a hardware processor is essential to estimate the angle of arrival in real time. In addition, ESPRIT processors should have high performance. The performance is related to the number of antennas, and the number of antennas required for each application are different. Therefore, we proposed an ESPRIT processor that provides 2 to 8 variable antenna configurations to meet the performance and complexity requirements according to the applied field. The proposed ESPRIT processor was designed using the Verilog-HDL and implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA).

  • Determination of position, velocity and time from the satellite signals is the central problem of the GPS receiver. Generally, GPS receiver uses least square method for navigation filter algorithm. The Kalman filter has known as an optimal linear estimator, which uses the knowledge of the system dynamics and the statistical characteristics of the system noises and measurement error. In this paper, we design an 8 state Kalman filter for GPS navigation and employ some techniques that can reduce computational burden, increase numerical stability, and improve filtering performance. To show its effectiveness, the designed filter is implemented in a GPS receiver and tested in real-time.

  • This paper introduces a sway suppression control for container cranes with unknown payloads and sway rates. With no priori knowledge concerning the magnitude of payload mass and sway rate, the proposed control maintains superior sway suppressing and trolley positioning against external disturbances. The proposed scheme combines a second order sliding mode control and an adaptive control to cope with unknown payloads. A second order sliding mode control without feedback of the sway rate is first designed, which is based on a class of feedback linearization methods for stabilization of the under-actuated sway dynamics of the container. Under applicable restrictions of the magnitude of payload inertia and sway rate, a linear regression model is obtained, and an adaptive control with a payload estimator is then designed, which is based on Lyapunov stability methods for the fast attenuation of trolley oscillations in the vicinity of the target position. The asymptotic stability of the overall closed-loop system is assured irrespective of variations of rope length. Simulation are shown in the existence of initial sway and external wind disturbances.

  • A stochastic numerical model for predictions of differential settlement of foundation Eoils is developed in this Paper. The differential settlement is highly dependent on the spatial variability of elastic modulus of soil. The Kriging method is used to account for the spatial variability of the elastic modulus. This technique provides the best linear unbiased estimator of a parameter and its minimum variance from a limited number of measured data. The stochastic finite element method, employing the first-order second-moment analysis for computations of error Propagation, is used to obtain the means, ariances, and covariances of nodal displacements. Finally, a reliability model of differential settlement is proposed by using the results of the stochastic FEM analysis. It is found that maximum differential settlement occurs when the distance between two foundations is approximately same It with the scale of fluctuation in horizontal direction, and the probability that differential settlement exceeds the allot.able vague might be significant.

  • This study suggests a general methodology which is designed for assessing RDOC behavior at the catchment scale by coupling properly a series of steam flow and water quality simulation models and actual monitoring data set. The modified TANK model in which a river routing function is incorporated to the conventional one is applied to simulate the long-term daily stream flow data, and the simulated stream flow data is combined with the 7-parameter log-linear model coupled to the minimum variance unbiased estimator to simulate the long-term daily water quality (BOD, COD and TOC) loads. Finally, the regression analysis between the usually monitored water quality data (BOD, COD and TOC) and RDOC is combined with the simulated water quality data to manifest the spatio-temporal variability of RDOC flux behavior at the Korean TMDL catchment scale.

  • In order to meet the requirement for higher thickness accuracy in tandem cold rolling processes, it is strongly necessary to have good performance in control units. To meet this requirement, this paper suggested an output regulating control system with a roll-eccentricity estimator for each rolling stand of tandem cold mills. Considering entry thickness variation and roll eccentricity simultaneously as the major disturbances, a synthesis of multivariable control systems was presented based on H$\infty$ control theory, which could reflect the knowledge of input direction and spectrum of disturbance signals on design. Then, to effectively reject roll eccentricity, a weight function having some poles on the imaginary axis was introduced. This lead to a non-standard H$\infty$ control problem, and the design procedures for solving this problem were analytically presented. The effectiveness of the proposed control method was evaluated through computer simulations and compared to that of the conventional linear quardratic control and feedforward control methods for roll eccentricity.

  • The paper investigates a novel detector receiver with Kalman channel information estimator and iterative channel response equalization for MIMO (multi-input multi-output) OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) communication systems in fast multipath fading environments. The performances of the existing linear equalizers (LE) are not good enough over most fast fading multipath channels. The existing adaptive equalizer with decision feedback structure (ADFE) can improve the performance of LE. But error-propagation effect seriously degrades the system performance of the ADFE, especially when operated in fast multipath fading environments. By considering the Kalman channel impulse response estimation for the fast fading multipath channels based on CE-BEM (complex exponential basis expansion) model, the paper proposes the iterative receiver with soft decision feedback equalization (SDFE) structure in the fast multipath fading environments. The proposed SDFE detector receiver combats the error-propagation effect for fast multipath fading channels and outperform the existing LE and ADFE. We demonstrate several simulations to confirm the ability of the proposed iterative receiver over the existing receivers.

  • The paper describes a new and rigorous mathematical model using counter-EMF for the rotor field oriented system with induction motor which uses the estimated speed and rotor flux based on a Model Reference Adaptive System as well as the real-time approach. The estimated speed and rotor flux is used for the speed and flux feedback control. The stability and the convergence of the estimator are improved on the basis of hyperstability theory for non-linear systems. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation and also the sensorless control was tested on the propulsion system simulator used for the development of Korean High-Speed Railway Train(KHSRT).

  • In this paper, a finite impulse response(FIR) fixed-lag smoother is proposed for discrete-time nonlinear systems. If the actual state trajectory is sufficiently close to the nominal state trajectory, the nonlinear system model can be divided into two parts: The error-state model and the nominal model. The error state can be estimated by adapting the optimal time-varying FIR smoother to the error-state model, and the nominal state can be obtained directly from the nominal trajectory model. Moreover, in order to obtain more robust estimates, the linearization errors are considered as a linear function of the estimation errors. Since the proposed estimator has an FIR structure, the proposed smoother can be expected to have better estimation performance than the IIR-structured estimators in terms of robustness and fast convergence. Additionally the proposed method can give a more general solution than the optimal FIR filtering approach, since the optimal FIR smoother is reduced to the optimal FIR filter by setting the fixed-lag size as zero. To illustrate the performance of the proposed method, simulation results are presented by comparing the method with an optimal FIR filtering approach and linearized Kalman filter.
