  • In this study, we implemented an experimental approach of ecological model development in order to emphasize the importance of input variable selection with respect to time-delayed arrangement between input and output variables. Time-series modeling requires relevant input variable selection for the prediction of a specific output variable (e.g. density of a species). Inadequate variable utility for input often causes increase of model construction time and low efficiency of developed model when applied to real world representation. Therefore, for future prediction, researchers have to decide number of time-delay (e.g. months, weeks or days; t-n) to predict a certain phenomenon at current time t. We prepared a total of 3,900 equation models produced by Time-Series Optimized Genetic Programming (TSOGP) algorithm, for the prediction of monthly averaged density of a potamic phytoplankton species Stephanodiscus hantzschii, considering future prediction from 0- (no future prediction) to 12-months ahead (interval by 1 month; 300 equations per each month-delay). From the investigation of model structure, input variable selectivity was obviously affected by the time-delay arrangement, and the model predictability was related with the type of input variables. From the results, we can conclude that, although Machine Learning (ML) algorithms which have popularly been used in Ecological Informatics (EI) provide high performance in future prediction of ecological entities, the efficiency of models would be lowered unless relevant input variables are selectively used.

  • For normally consolidated clay, several researchers have developed a number of theoretical time factors to determine the coefficient of consolidation However, depending on the assumptions and analytical techniques, it could considerably vary even for a specific degree of consolidation. In this paper, a method is proposed to determine a consistent coefficient of consolidation over all ranges of degree of consolidation by applying the concept of the Optimum Design Technique. The initial excess pore pressure distribution is assumed to be obtainable by the successive spherical cavity expansion theory. The dissipation of pore pressure is simulated by means of two dimensional linear-uncoupled axisymmetric consolidation analysis. The minimization of the differences between the measured and the predicted excess pore pressures was carried by BFGS unconstrained optimum design algorithm with one dimensional golden section search technique. By analyzing numerical and real field examples, it can be found that the adopted optimum technique gives a consistent and convergent results.

  • This paper deals with analysis and real-time Implementation of a wide band adaptive multirate speech codec (AMR-WB) using a fixed-point DSP of TI's TMS320C6201. In the AMR-WB codec, input speech is divided into two frequency bands, lower and upper bands, and processed independently. The lower band signal is encoded based on the ACELP algorithm and the upper band signal is processed using the random excitation with a linear prediction synthesis filter. The implemented AMR-WB system used 218 kbytes of program memory and 92 kbytes of data memory. And its proper operation was confirmed by comparing a decoded speech signal sample-by-sample with that of PC-based simulation. Maximum required time of 5 75 ms for processing a frame of 20 ms of speech validates real-time operation of the Implemented system.

  • In this paper. we propose a new autocalibration algorithm. 3D-based image synthesis is roughly divided into two methods. One is using autocalibration method, and the other is using real 3D data like pattern information. The former is more progressive method. because there is no constraint or information about the scenes. Therefore autocalibration method has very difficult progress dealing with complicate non-lineal equations. Nowadays, constraints of camera intrinsic parameters are used in many researches. Therefore we solve the linear equations instead of complicate non-lineal equations. For example, to fix principal point of camera is a representative method.

  • In this paper, a new structure for the AEC(Acoustic Echo Canceller) is proposed in which echo signal components that can be created in mobile communications is effectively eliminated. Block Data Flow Architecture is a parallel architecture that achieves high performance, high efficiency, high throughput, and almost linear speed up. The proposed architecture employs AEC and is implemented using the TMS320C6711 for real-time applications. The proposed AEC shows improved performance by eliminating echoes at 55ms delay path. Since the proposed AEC can also be implemented in Firmware, it is believed to effectively work on various types of echoes if it is applied on CDMA mobile devices. The TMS320C6711 shows much better performance comparing to previous DSPs. For experimental verifications, filtering operation using adaptive algorithm is performed on TMS320C6711 board and error signals resulted from computations are monitored on PC, and then the performance of the implemented AEC is verified through ERLE computation. According the results of simulation, good characteristic of 100dB are shown after 500 sampling data.

  • Ergezinger's method, one of the layer-by-layer algorithms used for multilyer perceptrons, consists of an output node and can make premature saturations in the output's weight because of using linear least squared method in the output layer. These saturations are obstacles to learning time and covergence. Therefore, this paper expands Ergezinger's method to be able to use an output vector instead of an output node and introduces a learning rate to improve learning time and convergence. The learning rate is a variable rate that reflects the correlation coefficient between new weight and previous weight while updating hidden's weight. To compare the proposed method with Ergezinger's method, we tested iris recognition and nonlinear approximation. It was found that the proposed method showed better results than Ergezinger's method in learning convergence. In the CPU time considering correlation coefficient computation, the proposed method saved about 35% time than the previous method.

  • For the frequency-domain spectral fatigue analysis, the probability density function of stress range needs to be estimated based on the stress spectrum only, which is a frequency domain representation of the response. The probability distribution of the stress range of the narrow-band spectrum is known to follow the Rayleigh distribution, however the PDF of wide-band spectrum is difficult to define with clarity due to the complicated fluctuation pattern of spectrum. In this paper, efforts have been made to figure out the links between the probability density function of stress range to the structural response of wide-band Gaussian random process. An artificial neural network scheme, known as one of the most powerful system identification methods, was used to identify the multivariate functional relationship between the idealized wide-band spectrums and resulting probability density functions. To achieve this, the spectrums were idealized as a superposition of two triangles with arbitrary location, height and width, targeting to comprise wide-band spectrum, and the probability density functions were represented by the linear combination of equally spaced Gaussian basis functions. To train the network under supervision, varieties of different wide-band spectrums were assumed and the converged probability density function of the stress range was derived using the rainflow counting method and all these data sets were fed into the three layer perceptron model. This nonlinear least square problem was solved using Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm with regularization term included. It was proven that the network trained using the given data set could reproduce the probability density function of arbitrary wide-band spectrum of two triangles with great success.

  • In this study, a Cartesian-grid method based on finite volume approach is applied to simulate the ship motions in large amplitude waves. Fractional step method is applied for pressure-velocity coupling and TVD limiter is used to interpolate the cell face value for the discretization of convective term. Water, air, and solid phases are identified by using the concept of volume-fraction function for each phase. In order to capture the interface between air and water, the tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) scheme is used with weighed line interface calculation (WLIC) method which considers multidimensional information. The volume fraction of solid body embedded in the Cartesian grid system is calculated using a level-set based algorithm, and the body boundary condition is imposed by a volume weighted formula. Numerical simulations for the two-dimensional barge type model and Wigley hull in linear waves have been carried out to validate the newly developed code. To demonstrate the applicability for highly nonlinear wave-body interactions such as green water on the deck, numerical analysis on the large-amplitude motion of S175 containership is conducted and all computational results are compared with experimental data.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a damage model based on damage mechanics that can be used to analyze the mechanical behavior of structures with defects and the global behavior of damaged structures. A modified second order damage tensor that can be applied to finite element analysis is used to reflect the effect of damage. The damage stress computed from the effective stress is considered as an additional loading term acting on nodes and can represent the effect of crack surface. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is verified by comparing the analysis results with the experimental data from other studies and the analysis results based on transverse isotropic theory. The developed damage model is applied to the analyses of structures with cracks under linear elastic condition. The comparisons confirmed that the quantitative analysis of the structural behavior due to crack orientation and multiple sets of cracks is possible. Also, the damage caused by rock excavation and fault zone is analyzed. The results also showed that the developed model can effectively analyze the global behavior of damaged structures.

  • Wavelength selection and prediction algorithm for determining hematocrit are investigated. A model based on the difference in optical density induced by the pulsation of heart beat is developed by taking approximation of Twersky's theory on the assumption that the variation of blood vessel size is small during arterial pulsing[1]. A device is constructed with a five-wavelength LED array as light source. The selected wavelengths are two isobestic points and three in compensation for tissue scattering. Data are collected from 549 out-patients who are randomly grouped as calibration and prediction sets. The range of percent hematocrit was 19.3∼51.8. The ratio of the variations of optical density between systole and diastole at two different wavelengths is used as a variable. We selected several such variables that show high reproducibility among all variables. Multiple linear regression analysis is made. The relative percent error is 8% and the standard deviation is 3.67 for the calibration set. The relative % error and standard deviation of the prediction set are 8.2% and 3.69 respectively. We successfully demonstrate the possibility of non-invasive hematocrit measurement, particularly, using the wavelengths below 1000nm.
