We interpreted marine seismic profiles in conjunction with swath bathymetric and magnetic data to investigate rifting to breakup processes at the Korean margin leading to the separation of the Japan Arc. The Korean margin is rimmed by fundamental elements of rift architecture comprizing a seaward succession of a rift basin and an uplifted rift flank passing into the slope, typical of a passive continental margin. In the northern part, rifting occurred in the Korea Plateau, a continental fragment extended and partially segmented from the Korean Peninsula, that provided a relatively broader zone of extension resulting in a number of rifts. Two distinguished rift basins (Onnuri and Bandal Basins) in the Korea Plateau we bounded by major synthetic and smaller antithetic faults, creating wide and symmetric profiles. The large-offset border fault zones of these basins have convex dip slopes and demonstrate a zig-zag arrangement along strike. In contrast, the southern margin is engraved along its length with a single narrow rift basin (Hupo Basin) that is an elongated asymmetric half-graben. Rifting at the Korean margin was primarily controlled by normal faulting resulting from extension in the west and southeast directions orthogonal to the inferred line of breakup along the base of the slope rather than strike-slip deformation. Although rifting involved no significant volcanism, the inception of sea floor spreading documents a pronounced volcanic phase which seems to reflect slab-induced asthenospheric upwelling as well as rift-induced convection particularly in the narrow southern margin. We suggest that structural and igneous evolution of the Korean margin can be explained by the processes occurring at the passive continental margin with magmatism intensified by asthenospheric upwelling in a back-arc setting.
To understand vegetation changes along environmental gradients in the natural forests in the east side of the Cascade Range in Washington state, USA, line transects were used to sample six different forest environments in the Wenatchee National Forest in the north-facing and south-facing sites at 975, 1280 and 1700m elevation. Data were analyzed using ordination by detranded correspondence analysis. Pseudotsuga menziesii was found as one of the dominant species on all the six sites regardless of elevation or aspect, while Pinus ponderosa was dominant on south slopes only. Abies grandis and A. lasiocarpa were dominant species on north slopes at elevations of 1280 and 1700m, respectively. Moisture, as it related to aspect, was identified as one of the most important environmental gradients for explaining the variation of vegetation types. On north-facing slopes, compared to south-facing slopes, where moisture was not as limiting and canopies could grow denser, probably, elevation or competitive interaction was more important. Species diversity tended to decrease with increasing environmental severity, with south slopes having less diversity than north slopes due to extended water stress and harsher temperature extremes on south slopes. The age structure on north-facing and south-facing slopes was different. Light intensity, moisture and climate were different between these two slopes. Large scale disturbances(e.g., big fire or insects) were major causes in changing age structure. Younger trees showed a closer relationship between size and age than adult trees. DBH values of shade intolerant species in south-facing slope were bigger than those of north-facing slope, which suggested that aspect of stands be the most important factor for age and size.

Bing-gye valley(Kyongbuk Province, South Korea) is well known as a tourist attraction because of its meteorologic characteristics that show subzero temperature during midsummer. Also, there are some interesting geomorphic features in the valley area. Therefore, the valley is worth researching in geomorphology field. The aim of this paper is to achieve two purposes. These are to clarify geomorphic features on talus within Bing-gye valley area, and to infer the origin of Bing-gye valley. The main results are summarized as follows. 1) The formation of Bing-gye valley It would be possible to infer the following two ideas regarding the formation of Bing-gye valley. One is that the valley was formed by differential erosion of stream along fault line, and the other is that the rate of upheaval comparatively exceeded the rate of stream erosion. Especially, the latter may be associated with the fact that the width of the valley is much narrow. Judging that the fact the width of the valley is much narrow, compared with one of its upper or lower valley, it is inferred that Bing-gye valley is transverse valley. 2) The geomorphic features of talus (1) Pattern It seems to be true that the removal of matrix(finer materials) by the running water beneath the surface can result in partly collapse hollows. Taluses are tongue-shaped or cone-shaped in appearance. They are $120{\sim}200m$ in length, $30{\sim}40m$ in maximum width. and $32{\sim}33^{\circ}$ in mean slope gradient. The component blocks are mostly homogeneous in size and shape(angular), which reflect highly jointed free face produced by frost action under periglacial environment. (2) Origin On the basis of previous studies, the type of the talus is classified into rock fall talus. When considered in conjunction with the degrees of both weathering of blocks and hardness of blocks, it can be explained that the talus was formed under periglacial environment in pleistocene time. (3) The inner structure of block accumulation I recognize a three-layered structure in the talus as follows: (a) superficial layer; debris with openwork texture at the surface, 1.3m thick. (b) intermediate layer: small debris(about 5cm in diameter) with fine matrix(including humic soil), 70cm thick. (c) basal layer: over 2m beneath surface, almost pure soil horizon without debris (4) The stage of landform development Most of the blocks are now covered with lichen, and/or a mantle of weathering. It is believed that downslope movement by talus creep well explains the formation of concave slope of the talus. There is no evidence of present motion in the deposit. Judging from above-mentioned facts, the talus of this study area appears to be inactive and fossil landform.

In this paper, a novel voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using the harmonic control circuit based on the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines (TLs) is presented to reduce the phase noise without the reduction of the frequency tuning range and miniaturize the circuit size. The phase noise is reduced by the novel harmonic control circuit having the short impedances for the second- and third-harmonic components. The proposed harmonic control circuit is designed by using the CRLH TLs with the dual-band characteristic by the frequency offset and phase slope of the CRLH TLs. The high-Q resonator has been used to reduce the phase noise, but has the problem of the frequency tuning range reduction. However, the frequency tuning range of the proposed VCO has not been reduced because the phase noise has been reduced without the high-Q resonator. The miniaturization of the circuit size is achieved by using the CRLH TLs instead of the conventional right-handed (RH) TLs. The phase noise of VCO is -119.17 ~ -117.50 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz in the tuning range of 5.731 ~ 5.938 GHz.
Gwangtan-myeon, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do was classified as a 4 grade age-class deciduous tree forest, however as a result of vegetation survey, this site was found to consist of natural forest with deciduous trees, thus causing difficulty in judging which age class it belongs to. Subsequently, the necessity of drawing up a detailed stock map plan was raised. For this reason, this research was designed to propose a mapping method for a detailed stock map plan based on a detailed survey on actual vegetation, vegetation structure, and analysis data on tree rings. The detailed analysis of actual vegetation pattern showed that there exist 22 patterns of vegetation, in which the natural forest has 11 patterns, such as Quercus mongolica forest and Q. variabilis forest, etc. while the artificial forest was found to have 6 patterns including Castanea crenata, etc. In order to verify their age-class, this research measured a tree age by collecting 42 quadrats and 89 specimen tree cores on the basis of a detailed actual vegetation map; as a result, an artificial forest and oak trees with small diameters located at low-lying areas, was categorized as 2-grade age class(covering 29.8%), and other areas were judged to be available for land use as 3-grade age-class(covering 57.6%) while the areas judged to be 4-or-more grade age-class (covering 8.8%) was impossible for land use because they are located on a steep slope ridge line on a boundary. In case a proposed site for a small-scale development is judged as a natural forest with deciduous trees as mentioned above, it is necessary that a detailed stock map plan should be drawn up through a detailed investigation into actual vegetation and analysis of plant gathering structure & specimen trees. A detailed stock map plan includes the data that makes it possible to comprehensively judge natural property, scarcity, and diversity of vegetation; thus, it is considered that a detailed stock map plan will be useful in judging the development propriety of a small-scale site.
This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of the road alignment, correlations among evaluation factors of the alingment, and the relationships between the evaluation factors and terrain factors for the forest road of five National Forest Offices. The results were as follows : 1. The elongation coefficients(${\eta}$) of forest road in Kangnung and Wonju National Forest Office were ranged 0.3~0.5, and those of Andong, Namwon, and Kongju National Forest Offices were ranged 0.2~0.3 in straight line of 100m, 200m, and 300m. 2. Three different types of plane alignment were identified for Kangnung and Wonju National Forest Offices, Namwon and Kongju National Forest Offices, Andong National Forest Office. However, longitudinal alignment for five National Forest Offices tended to be similar conditions. 3. Low correlation coefficients were calculated in the relation between elongation coefficients(${\eta}$) and evaluation factors of plane alignment(curve length ratio(%), sum of inverse number of each curve radius(m/km), and sum of each intersection angle($^{\circ}/km$)) for three straight lines. On the contrary, high correlation coefficients were obtained among the relations of curve length ratio(%), sum of inverse number of each curve radius(m/km), and sum of each intersection angle($^{\circ}/km$). 4. Slope(%) were closely correlated with plane alignment, and so were the relationships between frequency of valleys and streams(No./km) and elongation coefficients(${\eta}$) of forest road.

A continuous monitoring of textural characteristics of surface sediments, sedimentation rates and beach profile was carried out to investigate the seasonal variations of sedimentary processes in the Imjado beach, southwestern coast of Korea for two years. The beach profiles consist of steep beach face and relatively flat middle and low tide beaches. The slope of the beach face increases in summer and decreases in winter, in good accordance with the standard beach cycle. Ridge and runnel systems are well developed in the middle and low tide beaches during the summer, but these structures are replaced by mega-ripples during the winter. The sediments are fining southward as well as landward. The mean grain-size tends to be increasingly coarser during seasons of autumn and winter on the north beach and during seasons of winter and spring on the south one. In addition, the sediments are eroded on the north beach and accumulated on the south one as a whole. These are probably due to southward transportation of the sediments as long-shore current (NE-SW) runs around the coastal line of the beach. However, the seasonal variations in accumulation rates are very complex and irregular. It is considered that the Imjado beach represents in non-equilibrium state, as a result of coastal and submarine topographic changes by artificial agents and sea-level uprising associated with global warming.

The purpose of this research presents a method to position and makes the structure for eco-corridors reasonably with collectable analysing results of various effects shown in mammals' road-kill at 429 points. Target animals of this research are Leopard cat, Siberian weasel, Raccoon dog, Korean hare, Eurasian red squirrel, Siberian chipmunk and Water deer. The results derived from the empirical analysis on the contents above are followed. First, according to the results as for Leopard cat road kill analysis, which is designated as Endangered Species Class II, the eco-corridor might be located at near village having stead food in order to decrease the frequencies of road-kill, because its road kill points were mainly collected at 4 lane hilly road with mountain-road-farm area geological type of. Second, because Siberian weasel's road kill was detected at 2 lane hilly road with mountain-road-stream geological type, the eco-corridor might be located at near a mill to decrease road-kill frequencies. Third, the road-kill frequency of Eurasian red squirrel can be reduced when the eco-corridor is located at the area across coniferous tree near 4 lane west sea freeway with mountain-road-mountain. Fourth, the road-kill of Raccoon dog can be reduced when the eco-corridor is located at 4 lane mountain road or hilly road with the geological type having farm land-road-mountain(stream). Fifth, Korean hare's road-kill can be reduced when the eco-corridor is located at grass land across ridge line of mountain, because wild rabbit road kill was happened at 4 lane mountain road or 2 lane mountain road(mountain-road-mountain). Sixth, As for Siberian chipmunk, the eco-corridor might be located at the side slope of mountain road at 2 lane mountain road under the speed of 60km/h with mountain-road-mountain. Seventh, For Water deer, the eco-corridor might be located at 4 lane hilly road with mountain-road-farm land. As for Common otter, Amur hedgehog, Yellow-throated marten, Weasel, it is difficult to specify the proper site of eco-corridor due to the lack of data. Eco-corridors for carnivores might be well located at 4 lane hilly road or 2 lane hilly road with mountain-road-farm land, and the track for herbivores might be well located as a overhead bridge on mountain-road-mountain type across mountains. In order to position eco-corridors for wildlife properly, we have to research animal's behavior with ecological background, and to consider the local uniqueness and regularly collect the empirical road-kill data in long term 3 to 5 year, which can be the foundation for the more suitable place of wild life eco-corridors.

Past study of tsunami heavily relied on the numerical modelling using 2D Boussinesq Eq. and Solitary wave. Lately, based on the fact that numerically simulated run up heights based on solitary wave are somewhat smaller than the measured one, Leading Depression N (LDN) Wave has been elaborated, which can account the advancement of a shore line before tsunami strikes a shore. Thereafter it is reported that more accurate simulation can be possible once LDN is deployed. On the other hand, there were numerous reports indicating that stable LDN wave can't be sustained in the hydraulic model test. These conflicts between the hydraulic model tests and numerical results have their roots on the assumption made in the derivation of Boussinesq type wave model such as that wave nonlinearity is equally balanced with wave dispersiveness. Hence, in the numerical simulation based on the Boussinesq type wave model, wave dispersiveness is inevitably underestimated, especially in deep water. Based on this rationale, we developed the modified methodology for the generation of stable LDN wave in the 3D numerical wave flume, and proceeded to numerically analyze the depression effect of Hybrid Breaker on the run up height due to tsunami using the Navier Stoke Equation. The verification of newly proposed wave model in this study was carried out using the run up height from the hydraulic model test. It was shown that Hybrid Breaker consisting of three water chamber and slope at its front can reduce 13% of run up height for H = 5m, and 10% of run up height for H = 6m.

In order to find the best design of artificial stream for the riverbed filtration in multi-purpose filtration pond, a mathematical model was developed employing the energy line and the Manning's formula and was analyzed by the Euler's technique. Various design factors were investigated through scenario analyses of the artificial stream using the model. Results showed that the appropriate slope of the stream bottom was 2/10,000 and the appropriate infiltration rate at the streambed was $2.5m^3/m^2-day$ for the pond with the area of 100 ha, and that the Manning's roughness coefficient in this case was expected to be about 0.026 and the maximum water-depth was less than 1m. It was also shown that the longer the artificial stream the more advantageous it became for the riverbed filtration. Furthermore, results showed that it was not an efficient way to prevent clogging of the streambed by increasing the flow velocity of the stream and that the performance was higher near a weir with a large head drop.
