  • This study aims to examine the influence of experimental and numerical factors on the results of the test and finite element simulation to evaluate the formability of sheet metals. The stretch-forming test with a hemispherical punch is carried out to obtain the limiting dome height (LDH) and forming limit diagram (FLD) for several kinds of aluminium and steel sheet. The results of the LDH and FLD tests are analysed to find any correlation with the uniaxial tensile properties. It proves that the size of the prescribed grid has great influence on the measured value of strain. The finite element analysis of the punch stretching process is also carried out and the result is compared with the experimental data. The influence of the numerical parameters such as friction coefficient, element size and anisotropy model on the simulation results tms out to be very considerable.

  • One of the preferred methods that can be used to verify the results of finite element analysis is to measure surface strains of the deformed part for purpose of direct comparison with simulation results. Instead of using the usual manual method the vision-based measurement method is capable of determining surface geometry and strain from the deformed grid pattern automatically with the help of a computer. To obtain strain distribution over an area, the coordinates of such a surface grid are determined from the multiple video images by applying the photogrammetry principle. Methods to improve the overall accuracy of the vision-based strain measurement system are explored and the possible accuracies that can be attained by such a measurement method are discussed. A major emphasis is placed on the initial grid application method its accuracy and ease of subsequent image processing. Finite element analyses of limiting dome height(LDH) test are carried out and the results of them are compared with exsperimen-tal data.

  • The mechanical properties including forming limit and deep-drawability of commercially-used sheet metals were experimentally estimated in this study. Uniaxial tensile test to obtain basic mechanical properties was carried out, followed by limiting dome height (LDH) test and forming limit diagram (FLD) test to quantitatively evaluate the sheet-formability. Deep drawing and reverse drawing tests were also performed to find out the critical values of the blank holding force and the gap between the die and the blank holder which enabled the deep drawing and reverse drawing of a successful cop without any wrinkle or fracture. The thickness of the cup wall along the rolling-, transeverse- and $45^{\circ}$-directions was measured and compared with one another. And the punch force-stroke curve and the critical punch force expected from the theory coincided with the experimental result very well for mild steel while not for aluminium alloy.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the database of forming limit diagram applicable to the warm forming of oil pan. The test materials are SCP1 and SCP3C with the thickness of 1.4mm which is used for the oil pan of automobile. The testing temperature is 5$^{\circ}C$~15$0^{\circ}C$ which is In the range of practical usage. The results are the forming limit diagram limiting dome height and the maximum punch load at each temperature such as 5$^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, 6$0^{\circ}C$, 9$0^{\circ}C$, 12$0^{\circ}C$ and 15$0^{\circ}C$. From these results, we can see that the forming limit curves are translated depending upon the temperature and that FLC at low temperature is higher than at high temperature. Both of limiting dome height and maximum punch load also decrease as the temperature increases. Present results can be useful for die trial and forming analysis as a tool of evaluating the forming severity for the sheet metal forming processes at the warm working condition by comparing the practical strains with FLC.

  • The combination of tailor welded blank (TWB) and hot stamping often offers improved crash-worthiness and reduced mass of stamped parts in the automobile body. To investigate the formability of laser TWB and the reliability of weld line, the present study used 22MnB5 boron steel sheet of the same thickness and used the Erichsen cupping test at elevated temperatures. The effects of laser direction, die temperature, weld line positions and forming speed on formability(the limiting dome height) were studied and the results were compared with the formability of the base material.

  • The numerical simulation of the Forming Limit Diagram(FLD) test was carried out to calculate the limiting dome height(LDH: ISO12004-2) for aluminum alloy sheet Al6061-T6. The finite element analysis was used as an effective method for evaluating formability and diagnosing possible production problems in sheet stamping operations. To predict fracture during the stamping process, several failure models such as Cockcroft-Latham, Rice-Tracey, Brozzo and ESI-Wilkins-Kamoulakos(EWK) criteria were applied. The predicted results were discussed and compared with the experiments for Al6061-T6.
