The purpose of this paper is to propose a simple analysis method of axial deformation of base-isolation rubber bearings in a building subjected to earthquake loading and present its applicability to the analysis of the bound of the aspect ratio of base-isolated buildings. The base shear coefficient is introduced as a key parameter for the bound analysis. The bound of the aspect ratio of base-isolated buildings is analyzed based on the relationship of the following four quantities; (i) ultimate state of the tensile stress of rubber bearings based on a proposed simple recursive analysis for seismic loading, (ii) ultimate state of drift of the base-isolation story for seismic loading, (iii) ultimate state of the axial compressive stress of rubber bearings under dead loads, (iv) prediction of the overturning moment at the base for seismic loading. In particular, a new recursive analysis method of axial deformation of rubber bearings is presented taking into account the nonlinear tensile behavior of rubber bearings and it is shown that the relaxation of the constraint on the ultimate state of the tensile stress of rubber bearings increases the limiting aspect ratio.
An experimental study is carried out to evaluate the performance of Lime mortar-Well graded Soil (Lime-WS) columns for the improvement of soft soils. Tests are conducted on a column of 100 mm diameter and 600 mm length surrounded by soft soil in different area ratios. Experiments are performed either with the entire area loading to evaluate the load - settlement behavior of treated grounds and only a column area loading to find the limiting axial stress of the column. A series of tests are carried out in soaking condition to investigate the influence of moisture content on the load - settlement behavior of specimens. In order to compare the behavior of Lime-WS columns with Conventional Stone (CS) columns as well as Geogrid Encased Stone (GES) columns, the behavior of these columns have been also considered in the present study. Remarkable improvement in the behavior of soft soil is observed due to the installation of Lime-WS columns and the performance of these columns is significantly enhanced by increasing the area ratio. The results show that CS columns are not suitable as a soil improvement technique for extremely soft soils and should be enhanced by encasing the column or replaced by rigid stone columns.
Elements used in steel structures may be considered as an assembly of number of thin flat walls. Local buckling of these members can limit the buckling capacity of axial load resistance or flexural strength. We can avoid a premature failure, caused by effects of local buckling, by limiting the value of the wall slenderness which depend on its critical buckling stress. According to Eurocode 3, the buckling stress is calculated for an internal wall assuming that the latter is a simply supported plate on its contour. This assumption considers, without further requirement, that the two orthogonal walls to this wall are sufficiently rigid to constitute fixed supports to it. In this paper, we focus on webs of steel profiles that are internal walls delimited by flanges profiles. The objective is to determine, for a given web, flanges dimensions from which the latter can be considered as simple support for this web.
There is an increasing need in the United States and around the world to move used nuclear fuel from wet storage in fuel pools to dry storage in casks stored at independent spent fuel storage installations or interim storage sites. Under normal conditions, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission limits cladding temperature to $400^{\circ}C$ for high-burnup (>45 GWd/mtU) fuel, with higher temperatures allowed for low-burnup fuel. An analysis was conducted with FRAPCON-4.0 on three modern fuel designs with three representative used nuclear fuel storage temperature profiles that peaked at $400^{\circ}C$. Results were representative of the majority of US light water reactor fuel. They conservatively showed that hoop stress remains below 90 MPa at the licensing temperature limit. Results also show that the limiting case for hoop stress may not be at the highest rod internal pressure in all cases but will be related to the axial temperature and oxidation profiles of the rods at the end of life and in storage.
In this paper, experimental program and associated numerical study were carried out to evaluate the fire resistance of unprotected concrete-filled rectangular steel tubular (CFT) columns subjected to the standard fire. The key testing parameters included the length effect, the load ratio, and the sectional dimensions of the CFT columns. Temperature distribution and axial deformation of the CFT column specimens were measured and analyzed. Rather early local buckling of steel tubes was observed in all the specimens. This caused subsequent load transfer from steel tube to concrete, and eventually triggered concrete crushing, or complete loss of the load bearing capacity of the column. This implies that the limit state of local buckling as well as overall flexural buckling should be incorporated in fire design procedure. As expected, the fire resistance time of specimen with higher load ratio consistently lessened. The prediction of fire resistance time of unprotected CFT columns based on the limiting steel temperature in current design codes or the formula proposed by previous studies is slightly conservative compared to the fire test results available. To establish the finite element analysis model that can be used to predict the thermal and structural behaviour of unprotected CFT columns in fire, the fully coupled thermal-stress analysis was also tried by using the commercial code ABAQUS. The numerical results showed a reasonable global correlation with the experimental results.
In this paper, a numerical study is carried out to investigate the turbulent flow around a twin-skeg container ship model with rudders including propeller effects. A commercial CFD code, FLUENT is used with body forces distributed on the propeller disk to simulate the ship stem and wake flows with the propeller in operation. A multi-block, matching, structured grid system has been generated for the container ship hull with twin-skegs in consideration of rudders and body-force propeller disks. The RANS equations for incompressible fluid flows are solved numerically by using a finite volume method. For the turbulence closure, a Reynolds stress model is used in conjunction with a wall function. Computations are carried out for the bare hull as well as the hull with appendages of a twin-skeg container ship model. For the bare hull, the computational results are compared with experimental data and show generally a good agreement. For the hull with appendages, the changes of the stem flow by the rudders and the propellers have been analyzed based on the computed result since there is no experimental data available for comparison. It is found the flow incoming to the rudders has an angle of attack due to the influence of the skegs and thereby the hull surface pressure and the limiting streamlines are changed slightly by the rudders. The axial velocity of the propeller disk is found to be accelerated overall by about 35% due to the propeller operation with the rudders. The area and the magnitude of low pressure on the hull surface enlarge with the flow acceleration caused by the propeller. The propellers are found to have an effect on up to the position where the skeg begins. The propeller slipstream is disturbed strongly by the rudders and the flow is accelerated further and the transverse velocity vectors are weakened due to the flow rectifying effect of the rudder.

Concrete-filled steel tubular columns can improve the strength and deformation capacity of structures, thereby enabling the development of efficient structures. The Korean design standard (KDS41) regarding concrete-filled steel tubular structures, established by the architectural institute of Korea in 2005, was revised in 2009 and 2016. The objective was to understand the compressive strengths and deformation capacity of stub columns for concrete-filled square steel tubes under uniaxial compression and validate the KDS41's standard code for necessary corrections. Experiments were conducted on 26 specimens with parameters, such as the width-thickness ratio of cold-formed square tubes. The following values of the stub columns for concrete-filled square steel tubes were obtained: compressive strengths, relationship between the axial load and axial displacement, and failure modes. An analysis of these results enabled an understanding of the concrete-filled effect and the influence of the wide-thickness ratio. The compressive strengths of filled concrete saw a 9% increase compared to a state of uniaxial stress, which must be noted in a future edition of KDS41. After benchmarking the results regarding square steel tubes generated by cold forming to the guidelines provided by the KDS41, the KDS41's value of 2.26 for the limiting width-to-thickness ratio for the compact section was found to be inflated. With a safety concern, this paper proposes a more conservative value of 1.35.

The skin friction on single piles was investigated by using an analytical study and a numerical analysis. The emphasis was given to the variation of skin friction on piles based on the load transfer mechanism developed for the consolidation of a surrounding soft clay. Local yield or slip at the pile-soil interface was taken into account by specifying a limiting value of shear stress. The response of a single pile was analyzed and compared to the results of field case study. Based on the results obtained, it is shown that the skin friction on a pile increases as the degree of consolidation increases and the ultimate axial forces result from the long term behavior of clay corresponding to the end of the consolidation. It is also found that the analysis using one-dimensional consolidation theory as well as two or three-dimensional non-linear analysis gives relatively reasonable results.
