  • This is an experimental research in order to judge the applicability of sewage sludge incineration ash having applied the mixing proportion needed to manufacture bricks and to do plaster work with addition of hwangtoh and slaked lime as a part of the methods for utilizing the wastes produced from sewage sludge incineration ash. Based on the results from experiment and analysis, it is judged that, in case of mixing proportion of 1:2 for the purpose of plastering and masonry work, the cement mortar produced by using a 10% addition ratio of sewage sludge incineration ash with mixture of hwangtoh covering all range of addition ratio, and also the cement mortar produced by using a 20% of sewage sludge incineration ash together with 0% and 10% addition ratio of hwangtoh, was possible to be applied to the practical use. In case of mixing proportion of 1:7 for manufacture of bricks and blocks, if such brick and block products are produced with 10% and 20% addition ratio of sewage sludge incineration ash having added aggregate fines or stone dust that has been actually used in brick and block manufacturing, it is judged that these bricks and blocks could be practically used in the job sites, although strength development is a little bit lower.

  • The feasibility study on paraffin binder as a solidifying agent of digested sewage sludge cake was peformed. The availability of paraffin binder as a solidifying agent was investigated by several tests. Based on the tests, it is ascertained that paraffin binder with a small amount of quicklime and fly ash enhances the solidification of digested sewage sludge cake. Paraffin binder shortened the drying time of digested sewage sludge cake and solidified sludge with paraffin was not dissolved in water again. Also, the unconfined compressive strength of solidified sludge with paraffin increases.

  • This paper is focused on an experimental study in order to investigate the utilization of sewage sludge ash as the cover and liner materials for the waste disposal landfill or as construction materials. A series of tests were performed to evaluate the basic properties, compaction, compressive strength, consolidation, permeability, and CBR of sewage ash. Specially, clay bricks were made as increasing replacement ratio of sewage ash (such as 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30%). And tests were fulfilled for its quality. Bentonite and lime were used as the additives to improve permeability properties of sewage sludge ash. As a result of tests, it was shown that the permeability coefficient decreases as increasing bentonite content and the percentage of bentonite was roughly needed 20% to keep the permeability coefficient below $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$. The results of unconfined compression tests show that sewage ash meets the criteria of the unconfined compression strength for cover material. It was shown that the compressive strength decreases as increasing the replacement ratio of sewage sludge ash and the maximum replacement ratio of sewage sludge ash to satisfy the quality standards of the third degree bricks was about 15%.

  • The effects of turning frequency were examined on the efficiency of composting lime treated excess sludge amended with sawdust from the activated sludge process after a liquid/solids separation process. The raw and excess sludge from the activated sludge process associated with the hog wastewater treatment system is a significant problem and composting is an effective method far reducing the pollution potential of hog wastewater sludge. The coagulant used sludge composting and ammonia emissions from composting are not well established. The effect of compost properties such as high total carbon, C/N ratio and pH value on performance of composting sludge and biofiltration of ammonia from composting process were investigated. The ammonia emission was not significantly increased during composting. The ammonia concentrations of the exhaust air of composter were ranged from 0.5 and 7 ppm about 12 days after composting. The performance of the hog wastewater sludge composting was the most sensitive to chemical treated sludge properties such as high total carbon and high C/N ratio of the initial compost mixes. Temperature in compost and ammonia emission were not greatly affected by the turning frequency.

  • Water treatment processes produce sludges resulting from water clarification. Sludge production amount increases each year and its treatment and disposal is growing to social problems according to water demand increase. Water treatment plant sludges can be modified to soil cover in sanitary landfill site through the lime treatment. Compression strength of $1.0kg/cm^2$ or more is recommended for soil cover material in municipal landfilling site. Compression and shear strength properties of modified sludges showed material property improvement applicable for soil cover alternatives. Solidification effect of the modified sludge was observed through the scanning electron microscope. Extraction tests for hazardous components in sludges revealed that extraction levels of cadmium, copper, and lead were below the regulated criteria. When adding 10% calcium hydroxide to water treatment plant sludges, the modified sludges can reach material properties for cover soil after 28 days solidification reaction.

  • The dewatering characteristics of the sewage sludge was investigated through the experimental observations and model simulations. The activated sludge and the anaerobically digested sludge were examined for the dewaterability evaluation within the pressure range of $0{\sim}10^6N/m^2$. Modified Buchner funnel test and compression test by the consolidometer were conducted to evaluate average specific resistance, porosity, and moisture percentage of filter cake. Shirato's technique of compression-permeability test was followed for the pressure range lower than about $10^2N/m^2$. The flocculation effects on sludge dewatering was also examined for ferric chloride and polymeric flocculant. The application of hydrated lime which can be used for flue-gas desulfurization showed improved moisture percentage, and was thought to have positive feasibility in combined system of sludge dewatering and incineration. Determined characteristic constants were applied to Tiller's cake filtration model to simulate liquid pressure distribution and porosity distribution in cake. Model simulations showed a sharp drop of the porosity close to the cake-medium interface for the highly compressible material such as the activated sludge and the anaerobically digested sludge.

  • Sewage sludge produced in Korea was 1,275,800 tons (dewatered sludge cake) per year in 1996, which is 3,495 tons per day, 0.303% of 11,526,100 tons per day of sewage treated in 79 sewage treatment plants. Sludge production has been and will be increasing in accordance with construction of new facilities for sewage treatment. Most of the sludge is currently disposed by landfill and ocean dumping, but it is becoming difficult to find suitable sites for landfill, particularly in big cities such as Seoul. In addition, rapid increase of landfill cost is anticipated in a near future. Current trend for sludge disposal in advanced countries is land application. Over the past 10 to 20 years in the United States, sludge management practices have changed significantly, moving from disposal to beneficial use. They use biosolid for utilization instead of sludge for disposal. Under the Clean Water Act of 1972, amended in 1987 by Congress, the U.S. EPA was required to develop regulations for the use and disposal of sewage sludge. The EPA assessed the potential for pollutants in sewage sludge to affect public health and the environment through a number of different routes of exposure. The Agency also assessed the potential risk to human health through contamination of drinking water sources or surface water when sludge is disposed on land. The Final Rules were signed by the EPA Administrator and were published (Federal Register, 1993). These rules state that sewage sludge shall not be applied to land if the concentration of any pollutant in the sludge exceeds the ceiling concentration. In addition, the cumulative loading rate for each pollutant shall not exceed the cumulative pollutant loading rate nor should the concentration of each pollutant in the sludge exceed the monthly average concentration for the pollutant. The annual pollutant loading rate generally applies to applications of sewage sludge on agricultural lands. The most popular beneficial use of sewage sludge is land application. The sludge has to be stabilized for appling to land. One of the stabilization process for sewage sludge is lime stabilization process. The stabilization process is consisted of the stabilizing process and the drying process. Stabilization reactor can be a drum type reactor in which a crossed mixer is equipped. The additive agents are a very reactive mixture of calcium oxide and others. The stabilized sludge is dried in sun drier or rotary kiln.

  • Red mud is a waste material formed during the production of alumina when the bauxite ore is subjected to caustic leaching. It is a brick-red colored highly alkaline (pH 10-12) sludge containing mostly oxides of iron, aluminum, titanium, and silica. Red mud, due to its high aluminum, iron, and calcium contents, has been suggested as a cheap adsorbent for removal of toxic metals (e.g., As, Cr, Pb, Cd) as well as for water or wastewater treatment. The basic advantage of red mud is its versatility in application. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of red mud on stabilization and fixation of heavy metals (such as Pb, Cu, C $r^{6+}$, Cd, Zn) contained in the Al-coating sludge and soil. The results showed that the concentration of heavy metals leached from the treated sludge and soil was low, meeting the regulatory permit level.
