  • This study is a randomized controlled trial to compare the effects of light therapy on stress, depression, sleep quality and quality of life in middle-aged women. The participants of this study were 56 middle-aged women who worked at the same office. Data collection period was from August 26 to September 13 for the control group and from September 16 to October 4 for the experimental group. Subjective stress, depression, quality of sleep and quality of life in middle-aged women were measured by Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Center for Epidemiology studies of scale (CES-D), Verran & Synder-Halpern Sleep scale (VHS) and WHO Quality of Life Scale Abbreviated Version (WHOQOL-BREF). Stress index was measured using a Canopy9 RSA (IEMBIO, Gangwondo, Korea) equipment. The data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, real number and percentage, χ2-test, t-test, repeated measures ANOVA and ANCOVA using IBM SPSS Statistics version 25.0. The results showed that the experimental group applying light therapy had significantly lower subjective stress (F=6.30, p<.001) and higher quality of life (F=2.80, p=.049) than the control group, There was no difference in objective stress index, depression, and sleep quality. As a result, light therapy is partially effective in subjective stress and quality of life for middle-aged women, and further research is needed on middle-aged women working in work environments with limited light exposure.

  • Pregnant women's psychological health affects the health of the fetus. Therefore, health care for pregnant women is essential for a healthy fetus. One of the symptoms of pregnancy among many pregnant women is the depression of emotional ups and downs. One way to relieve this depression is to use light therapy and color therapy by using lighting. Adjust the color temperature of the light so that it affects the emotions through color. For example, ceiling lights in car dealerships are set up like a sun-light, or low color temperature are used to create a comfortable mood in facilities like spas. In this paper, we use image sensors to identify the psychological state and change the color temperature of the lighting in real time. The study was conducted to relieve postpartum depression by using the psychological effects of pregnant women with easily purchased lighting devices.

  • Purpose: This study compared the subjective and objective sleep quality between subjects with and without thoracic hyper-kyphosis. Methods: Forty participants were divided into a hyper-kyphosis (n=17) and normal group (n=17) by thoracic spinal angle measurement. The subjective sleep quality was measured using PSQI, a self-report, and objective sleep quality was measured using an actigraphy that measures time according to sleep patterns. Results: The PSQI scores of subjects with thoracic hyper-kyphosis were significantly higher than those with normal thoracic curvature (p=0.013). The total sleep time and real sleep time were less in subjects with hyper-kyphosis than in normal subjects (p=0.006; p=0.029). The light sleep time was less in subjects with excessive spondylolisthesis than in normal subjects (p=0.010). Light sleep time was less in those with hyper-kyphosis, but deep sleep time was similar to the subjects with a normal thoracic curvature (p=0.003; p=0.140). Conclusion: Subjects with thoracic hyper-kyphosis had a decrease in subjective sleep quality, such as sleep discomfort, and objective sleep quality, such as a decrease in sleep time compared to normal subjects.

  • In general, Cerenkov light is produced by a charged particle that passes through a medium with a velocity greater than that of visible light. Although the wavelength of Cerenkov light is very broad, the peak is in the almost visible range from 400 to 480 nm. Therefore, it always causes a problem to detect a real light signal that is generated in the scintillator on the fiber-optic sensor tip for dose measurements of high-energy electron beam. The objectives of this study are to measure, characterize and remove Cerenkov light generated in a fiber-optic radiation sensor tip to detect a real light signal from the scintillator. In this study, the intensity of Cerenkov light is measured and characterized as a function of incident angle of electron beam from a LINAC, and as a function of the energy of electron beam. As a measuring device, a photodiode-amplifier system is used, and a subtraction method using a background optical fiber is investigated to remove Cerenkov light.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the photodynamic effect of various photosensitizing agents against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA was exposed to light from a 632 urn diode laser (15 J/$cm^2$) in the presence of various photosensitizer, such as photofrin, photogem, radachlorine and ALA. In vivo study was performed using ICR mice. Twenty eight mice had a standard wound ($100\;mm^2$) created on the dorsum, and MRSA was inoculated into the wound region. The four groups were classified as follows: (1) the untreated control group (bacteria alone), (2) the bacteria plus light group (15 J/$cm^2$), (3) the bacteria plus photofrin group (kept in the dark), and (4) the photodynamic therapy (PDT) group (bacteria, photofrin, and light). After photofrin (dose 1 mg/kg) injection, the experimental group was irradiated with 632 urn diode laser (15 J/$cm^2$) for 30 minutes after In vitro results of PDT showed the complete killing of MRSA at the photofrin, radachlorine, and photogem However, ALA-PDT was ineffective on MRSA viability. In vivo results showed that photofrin has therapeutic effect on the wound infection. These results demonstrate that selective lethal photosensitization of MRSA can be achieved using phofrin, photogem and radachlorin. Thus, PDT can inactivate MRSA survival.

  • Targeted intracellular delivery of therapeutic agents is one of the great challenges for cancer treatment. Aptamers that bind to a variety of biological targets have emerged as new targeting moieties with high specificity for targeted cancer therapy. In this study, near-infrared (NIR) light-absorbing hollow gold nanocages (AuNCs) were synthesized and conjugated with AS1411 aptamer to achieve cancer-targeted photothermal therapy. AuNC functionalized with PEG and AS1411 (AS1411-PEG-AuNC) exhibited selective cellular uptake in breast cancer cells due to selective binding of AS1411 to nucleolin, a protein that is over-expressed in cancer cells over normal cells. As a result, AS1411-PEG-AuNC showed cancer-targeted photothermal activity. This study demonstrates that aptamer-conjugated AuNCs are effective tumor-targeting photothermal agents.

  • Photobiomodulation (PBM)-based therapy, which uses a phenomenon in which a light source of a specific wavelength band promotes ATP production in mitochondria, has attracted much attention in the fields of biology and medicine because of its effects on wound healing, inflammation reduction, and pain relief. Research on PBM-based therapy has mainly used lasers and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as light sources and, despite the advantages of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), there have been only a few cases where OLEDs were used in PBM-based therapy. In this research, the skin-care effect of PBM was analyzed using red (λ = 620 nm), green (λ = 525 nm), and blue (λ = 455 nm) OLED lighting modules, and was compared to the PBM effect of LEDs. We demonstrated the PBM-based skin-care effect of the red, green, blue OLED lighting modules by measuring the increase in the amount of collagen type-1 synthesis, the inhibition of melanin synthesis, and the suppression of nitric oxide generation, respectively.
