This article reviews the multiscale nature of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) observed by high-resolution characterizations in austenite stainless steels and Ni-base superalloys in light water reactors (including boiling water reactors, pressurized water reactors, and supercritical water reactors) with related opinions. A new statistical summary and comparison of observed degradation phenomena at different length scales is included. The intrinsic causes of this multiscale nature of SCC are discussed based on existing evidence and related opinions, ranging from materials theory to practical processing technologies. Questions of interest are then discussed to improve bottom-up understanding of the intrinsic causes. Last, a multiscale modeling and simulation methodology is proposed as a promising interdisciplinary solution to understand the intrinsic causes of the multiscale nature of SCC in light water reactors, based on a review of related supporting application evidence.
Delayed hydride cracking (DHC) was first observed in pressure tubes in Canadian CANDU reactors. In light water reactors, DHC was not observed until the late 1990s in high-burnup boiling water reactor (BWR) fuel cladding. In recent years, the focus on DHC has resurfaced in light of the increased interest in the cladding integrity during interim conditions. In principle, all spent fuel in the wet pools has sufficient hydrogen content for DHC to operate below $300^{\circ}C$. It is therefore of importance to establish the critical parameters for DHC to operate. This work studies the threshold stress intensity factor ($K_{IH}$) to initiate DHC as a function of temperature in Zry-4 for temperatures between $227^{\circ}C$ and $315^{\circ}C$. The experimental technique used in this study was the pin-loading testing technique. To determine the $K_{IH}$, an unloading method was used where the load was successively reduced in a stepwise manner until no cracking was observed during 24 hours. The results showed that there was moderate temperature behavior at lower temperatures. Around $300^{\circ}C$, there was a sharp increase in $K_{IH}$ indicating the upper temperature limit for DHC. The value for $K_{IH}$ at $227^{\circ}C$ was determined to be $2.6{\pm}0.3MPa$${\surd}$m.
Polymers submitted to thermo/electrical stress suffer from ageing that can drastically affect their functional behaviour. Understanding the physico/chemical processes at play during ageing and defining transport regimes in which these mechanisms start to be critical is therefore a prime goal to prevent degradation and to develop new formulation or new materials with improved properties. It is thought that a way to define these critical regimes is to investigate under which conditions (in terms of stress parameters) light is generated in the material by electroluminescence (EL). This can happen through impact excitation/ionization involving hot carriers or upon bi-polar charge recombination (a definition that excludes light from partial discharges, which would sign an advanced stage in the degradation process). After a brief review of the EL phenomenology under DC, we introduce a numerical model of charge transport postulating a recombination controlled electroluminescence. The model output is critically evaluated with special emphasize on the comparison between simulated and experimental light emission. Finally, we comment some open questions and perspectives.

This paper describes method to diagnose abiotic stresses such ad low root temperature, low light intensity and high salinity in cucumber plants with several physiological instruments. The stresses could be detected by measuring and analyzing the differences in chlorophyll content, temperature difference between leaf and atmosphere and light absorptance at wavelengths of 480, 560, 710, 1420 and 1650nm. It was concluded that the stresses could be first diagnosed from the 3rd to 10th day after treatment and the overall accuracy of diagnosis was estimated between 25 and 75%. near-infrared spectrometer showed better and earlier detection than the other instruments investigated.
Composites are very useful material for light train carbody due to its high specific strength and lightweight characteristics. The composites, called 3-D board, are developed with a special stitching method. In this process, the glass fiber fabrics of skin material and foam core material are stitched together with glass fiber thread. The glass thread in Z-axis turns into FRP form. The conventional delamination problem can be solved with 3-D sandwich structure. In addition, with the lower density of foam, the weight of the panel and the operation expenses can be highly reduced. To evaluate the usefulness of the 3-D board, the double-deck light train carbody is studied. The stress analyses are carried out under various loads and boundary conditions with FEM Code, ANSYS. On comparing with the aluminum carbody, 3-D board carbody can be reduced by about 2 ton for the total weight of carbody.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of electrical massager on stress-related parameters including heart rate variability (HRV), heart rate (HR) using the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal with motion artifact correction. Twenty healthy subjects were randomly allocated to receive a 15-min section of three types ((1) resting mode (control group), (2) light massage mode, (3) strong massage mode). Results indicated that self-report, VAS (Visual Analog Scale) significantly decreased for two massage modes after massage except control group. In strong massage mode, it was associated with significant increases in HF, but significant decreases in LF and LH/HF ratio compared with the light massage mode. For all outcomes, similar changes were not observed in the control group. Also, the result founded that mean HR of all groups decrease. We conclude that electrical massager reduces perceived stress and improves adaptive autonomic response to stress in healthy adults.
Isochromatics obtained from photoelastic experiment shows the stress distributions of full field of a structure under a load. Therefore stress distributions of the structure can be read at a glace through isochromatics. Many experimental data are obtained from isochromatics. And then, the various photoelastic experimental hybrid methods have been developed. Until now, monochromatic light has been used for photoelastic experimental hybrid method. Therefore the photoelastic experimental hybrid method used until now is called the photoelastic experimental hybrid method for black and white isochromatics. When stresses are analyed by photoelastic experimental hybrid method, many experimental data are needed. Therefore some fringe orders of isochromatics are needed for the photoelastic experimental hybrid method for white and black isochromatics. Therefore in this paper, the photoelastic experimental hybrid method for color isochromatics is developed. In this case, two fringe orders are enough for the experimental data of photoelastic experimental hybrid method for color isochromatics. Applying the method to stress concentration problems, its validity is confirmed. In the precision, the photoelastic experimental hybrid method for color isochromatics is better than the photoelastic experimental hybrid method for white and black isochromatics when fringe orders of isochromatics are few. When fringe orders are few, the photoelastic experimental hybrid method for color isochromatics can be used to analyze stress through few fringe orders of isochromatics.
To evaluate the effect of antioxidant on the cytotoxicity induced by oxidative stress of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cultured human skin melanocytes, colorimeric assay of XTT and tyrosinase activity assay were adopted after human skin melanocytes were preincubated for 2 hours in the media containing various concentrations of superoxide dismutase (SOD) before the treatment of hydrogen peroxide. Light microscopic study was carried out in same cultures. The results of this study were as follows 1. Cell viability of human skin melanocytes was significantly decreased by 30 and $40{\mu}M$ of hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$), respectively. 2. XTT50 was determined at $30{\mu}M$ after human skin melanocytes were treated with $10{\sim}40{\mu}M$ of hydrogen peroxide for 6 hours. 3. The cell viability of cultured human skin melanocytes pretreated with SOD was increased than that of cultured human skin melanocytes treated with $H_2O_2$ dose-dependently. 4. In tyrosinase activity of human skin melanocytes, the cell treated with SOD showed brown stain compared with $H_2O_2$ treated cells, dark stain. 5. In light microscopy, cultured human skin melanocytes exposed to $H_2O_2$ showed morphological changes such as the decreased cell number and cytoplasmic processes, compared with control. 6. In light microscopy, cultured human skin melanocytes pretreated with SOD showed the increase of cell number and cytoplasmic processes compared with $H_2O_2-treated$ group. From these results, it is suggested that oxidative stress of ROS such as $H_2O_2$ has cytotoxicity by showing the decreased cell viability, the increased tyrosinase activity and mophological changes of the decreased cell number and cytoplasmic processes. While, antioxidant like SOD was effective in the prevention of oxidative stress-mediated cytotoxicity by the increased cell viability, decreased tyrosinase activity and the protection of degenerative morphological changes in cultured human skin melanocytes.
This paper shows a derating design approach for LED reliability improvement. The LED is widely used in display devices or circuits. The main failure of interest is defined as 100% reduction of the light output intensity of LED resulting from corrosion due to stresses, i.e. temperature and humidity. The lifetime is varied according to the stress levels under where the LED operates so that correlation of the lifetime to these stress levels over time is modeled through accelerated life testings. A derating design approach to accomplish a required reliability level of LED is proposed to determine adequate the stress levels. In the approach, $B_{10}$ life, Failure rate, Sensitivity Analysis of LED are used as a reliability metric.
