  • Wedge-shaped fins are generally used to provide sufficient forces and moments to control and maneuver a supercavitating vehicle. There are four fins placed along the girth of the vehicle, near he tail: two of the fins are horizontal and the other two fins are vertical. In a fully developed supercavitating flow condition, a part of the fin is in a cavity pocket and the other is exposed to water. In this paper, experimental investigations of hydrodynamic characteristics of the wedge-shaped fin models are presented. Experiments were conducted at a cavitation tunnel of the Chungnam National University. We first closely observed the typical formation of wake cavitation and measured lift and drag forces acting on two different test models. Next, using a special device for generating natural and artificial supercavities, we investigated hydrodynamic forces at different cavitation number conditions. This work provides a basis for interpreting the cavity stability and hydrodynamic characteristics of the wedge-shaped control fin for a supercavitating vehicle.

  • In order to estimate a yacht sail performance, measuring system of aerodynamic forces acting on the yacht sail is constructed and experiments of flexible model sail are carried out at the medium-size subsonic wind tunnel of Chungnam National University. Experimental results for a flexible sail are compared with experimental and numerical results of fixed shape sail. In case of a fixed shape sail, lift and drag coefficients are rarely changed at all velocity conditions. However, those of the flexible sail are decreased as the incoming velocity is increased. These are understandably resulted from shape variations due to the flexible material. Therefore aero-elastic similarity should be more carefully considered in the model test rather than other similarities.

  • To improve ship's maneuverability high lift rudders like as Schilling rudder, flap rudder etc. were used. To predict the maneuverability of a ship with flap rudder HPMM tests are carried out. To analyze the test results modular model is used. To use modular model the forces of flap rudder must be measured separately from the hull forces. The flap rudder is made as independent system from the hull. To investigate the simulation results of modular model the tests results are analyzed by whole ship model, and simulated. The compared results of simulation show a good agreement except turning test. The reason is the different analysis result of flap rudder drag forces. From the present study it is possible to analyze HPMM tests of a ship with flap rudder by modular model.

  • Although machine learning (ML) techniques have been widely used in various fields of engineering practice, their applications in the field of wind engineering are still at the initial stage. In order to evaluate the feasibility of machine learning algorithms for prediction of wind loads on high-rise buildings, this study took the exposure category type, wind direction and the height of local wind force as the input features and adopted four different machine learning algorithms including k-nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), gradient boosting regression tree (GBRT) and extreme gradient (XG) boosting to predict wind force coefficients of CAARC standard tall building model. All the hyper-parameters of four ML algorithms are optimized by tree-structured Parzen estimator (TPE). The result shows that mean drag force coefficients and RMS lift force coefficients can be well predicted by the GBRT algorithm model while the RMS drag force coefficients can be forecasted preferably by the XG boosting algorithm model. The proposed machine learning based algorithms for wind loads prediction can be an alternative of traditional wind tunnel tests and computational fluid dynamic simulations.

  • In this study, wind tunnel test were conducted to improve an aerodynamic performance of HEMU400X pantograph system with 4 types of pantograph housing models. Experimental models were 1/4 scaled pantograph system, 1/4 scaled ground plate which is scaled down to real roof shape of HEMU-400x, and 4 types of pantograph housing models. The free stream of wind tunnel were 20, 40, 60, 70m/s. The lift and drag forces were measured with 2-axis load cell. And, Total pressure were measured with rake in the wake region of panhead. In addition, Surface flow visualization by tufts were performed to know flow characteristics around pantograph housing. According to the results of force tests and surface visualizations, pantograph housing shape is important part because the shape affects to pantograph system. Therefore, it is considered that adaption of pantograph housing is more advantageous to decrease drag and acoustic noise.

  • Birds and insects flap their wings to fly in the air and they can change their wing motions to do steering and maneuvering. Therefore, we created various wing motions with the parameters which affected flapping motion and evaluated the aerodynamic characteristics about those cases in this study. As the wing rotational velocity was fast and the rotational timing was advanced, the measured aerodynamic forces showed drastic increase near the end of stroke. The mean lift coefficient was increased until angle of attack of $50^{\circ}$ and showed the maximum value of 1.0. The maximum mean lift to drag ratio took place at angle of attack of $20^{\circ}$. Flow fields were also visualized around the wing using particle image velocimetry (PIV). From the flow visualization, leading-edge vortex was not shed at mid-stroke until angle of attack of $50^{\circ}$. But it was begun to shed at angle of attack of $60^{\circ}$.

  • The inherent problem of a Darrieus wind turbine is its inability to self-start. Usually, a motor is used to provide angular acceleration until lift forces are produced in the airfoil blades or up until the turbine can already sustain its speed on its own. This paper describes a method of improving the self-starting of an H-type Darrieus vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) by incorporating a helical Savonius turbine thus utilizing a drag-lift combination. The effect of each turbine in the combination relative to each other is investigated by testing a prototype windmill consisting of three NACA 0015 airfoil blades combined with a Savonius rotor with a helix angle of 180 degrees and whose swept area equals 30% of the entire turbine.

  • This study aims the observation of wing-in-ground effect near free surface. Numerical computations are carried out to observe the deformation of free surface and the effects on lift and drag. The detailed flow fields around two- and three-dimensional wings with NACA 0012 section are observed from the results of a commercial CFD program, FLUENT, and the local deformations of free surface are obtained by applying a Rankine panel method. In the present cases, the small deformation of free surface under the wings is observed, but different forces are found between solid wall and free surface when the speed of wings becomes large.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics of crescent and D-shape bundled conductors were measured by high frequency force balance technique in the wind tunnel. The drag and lift coefficients of each sub-conductor and the whole bundled conductors were presented under various attack angles of wind. The galloping possibility of bundled conductors is discussed based on the Den Hartog criterion. The influence of icing thickness, initial ice accretion angle and sub-conductor on the aerodynamic properties were investigated. Based on the measured aerodynamic force coefficients, a computationally efficient finite element method is also implemented to analyze galloping of iced bundled conductors. The analysis results show that each sub-conductor of the bundled conductor has its own galloping feature due to the use of aerodynamic forces measured separately for every single sub-conductors.

  • LES formulation was applied to simulate the flow fields around rotating fan blades tested by DLR. The turbulent flows around fan blade rotating with 500 RPM were simulated and the far-field noise was exactly computed by using the Focus Williams and Hawkings equation with an inclusion of quadrapole source formulation. The dipole noise computed at the far-field by predicted drag and lift forces at steady state was in good agreement with experimental data and the dipole source was also found to be the major factor than other sound sources from unsteady calculation.
