  • We know very well the importance of water. Recently, we perceive the truth that water influence the quality of products and we must pay for it. Besides, we recognize why the water treatment is indispensable for life as well as industries. The variation of environment changes the natural resources and threatens the human life. Now, we cannot get water freely from nature. We should find new processes which are effective and inexpensive. We believe that the membrane technology can suggest the new way of water treatment. I'd like to explain the situation of water resource and the membrane processes by UF/MF membranes. I'll also introduce several case studies in this lecture. Till now, about 10 MF/UF systems were established in Korea. Of course, the usage of MF/UF for water treatment is beginning stage in Korea. But the future prospect is very good. Korean government has been developed various kinds of membrane processes for the purpose of drinking water, water reuse, development of new water resources and water related technologies, etc. In near future, maybe we will meet serious water problems, water deficiency and contamination. Fortunetely, we can suggest the membrane process for solving those problems. Membrane technology will be the base of clean technology.

  • The service life of tools in metal forming technology is to a large extent limited by wear and fatigue fracture of the active elements. This presents a basic request for tool cost minimization and reduction of extensive machine down time, caused by premature tool failure. Currents developments are dominated by steps to reduce the causes of tool failure. A main problem of forming technology remains the insufficient reliability of tools due to a large and incalculable life time fluctuation. Only a systematic investigation of the failure mechanisms and operational loading of tools can lead to future improvements in tool layout, that is optimization of tool usage.

  • Deteriorations of concrete are governed by combined factors such as environmental stressors, processes and rates of deteriorations. Due to this reason, it's very difficult and important issue to predict quantitatively the service life of concrete structure. From this pont of views, the purpose of this study is to propose the approaches on the further development for predicting the remaining service life of concrete by analyzing the deteriorations mechanism and evaluating the existing models.

  • Presence of small amount of old newspapers printed with waterbased flexographic inks leads to a significant loss of brightness of the deinked pulp by flotation process. Recently there has been an increased interests in employing neutral deinking processes to solve the problems associated with waterbased flexo ink. A comparative experimental study was performed to evaluate the efficiency of neutral deinking and conventional alkaline deinking for ONP furnishes contaminated with flexo ink. Effects of the deinking processes on pulp quality and white water characteristics were examined. It was shown that neutral deinking would provide significant improvement in brightness, yield, and freeness as compared with conventional alkaline deinking. There was no increase in brightness when OMG was added in the furnish up to 20 %, and it was attributed to the redeposition of flexo inks on chemical pulp fibers.

  • The covalent conjugation of SUMO(Small Ubiquitin-related MOdifier) protein to its substrates regulates numerous cellular processes, including protein stability and activity in eukaryotes as well as in plants. In this present review, we summarize biochemical aspects of SUMO conjugation and deconjugation and the functions of SUMO and sumoylation-related proteins in Arabidopsis and other plants. In particular, we provide an overview of the roles of the SUMO in widely different biological processes including the ABA response, floral induction, pathogen defense, abiotic stresses and hormone signaling. Furthermore, we explore the possible roles of SUMO in embryo and seed development.

  • A lot of research works in the BPM area focuses on the development of new techniques in process mining. Even though the application of process mining to analyze real life process logs is important, only few case studies are available. Thus, in this paper, we conduct a case study on how to analyze a real life process log which comes from a Korean company in the heavy industry area. We analyze a customer service process that consists of a series of activities to enhance the level of customer satisfaction. In this case study, five research questions are derived based on collected questions from the company. Then we focus on bottleneck analysis, basic performance analysis and pattern analysis that are selected in order to answer the research questions. The analysis shows some abnormal behaviors in the process and possible ways to improve current processes are suggested.

  • Kimchi is a fermented Korean vegetable product prepared using mafor raw materials (oriental cabbage and radish) and other ingredients through a series of processes of grading, brining, blending, and fermentation. Kimchi fermentation is initiated by various microorganisms originally present in the raw materials, but the fermentation is gradually dominated by lactic acid bacteria. Thus, the complex biochemical activities obviously occur during, before and after kimchi fermentation and their biochemical characteristics greatly differ, depending on the raw materials and processes used. This review covers in detail the numerous biochemical characteristics of sugars, organic acids, amino acids, vitamins(B complex, carotene and ascorbic acid), pectic substances, flavor components and others during preparation and preservation of kimchi.

  • Natural draught cooling towers often develop visible crack structures as consequences of progressive damage processes over their life-time. The aim of this paper is a numerical demonstration of the progressive damage process of cooling towers, representatively for the reinforced concrete structures, in order to improve the durability and extend the life-time of structures subjected to such damage processes. For the analyses, the applied material model for reinforced concrete will be briefly introduced. An existing natural draught cooling tower with a pronounced crack structure, in which this crack structure indicates the typical damage pattern of large cooling towers will be numerically simulated. The change of dynamical behavior of the structure with regard to natural frequencies, reflecting the global damage process due to the degrading stiffness of the structure in dependence of the load type and intensity, will be presented and discussed.

  • The framework, described in this paper, involves artificial evolutionary systems that re -produce aimed solutions through a simulated Darwinian evolution process. Through this process the framework designs structures of machines innovatively and emergently especially in the stages of conceptual and basic design. Since the framework simulates the evolution of nature, it inevitably involves processes that converse the natural evolution to the artificial evolution. For the conversion, based on several methods as the building block modeling, Artificial Life, evolutionary computation and the law of natural selection, we propose a series of processes that consists of modeling, evaluation, selection, evolution etc. We have demonstrated the implementation of the framework with the design of multi-step gear systems.
