The Contact Fatigue Life Analysis of Transmission Gear considering Running-in (길들이기 과정을 고려한 변속기용 기어의 접촉피로 수명 해석)

  • Surface pitting is a major failure mode for gears. The contact fatigue life analysis of transmission gear considering running-in process is presented in this paper. Surface roughness change of rolling test is used in a life analysis. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions; the subsurface stress field is obtained using rectangular patch solutions. Mesoscopic multiaxial fatigue criterion which can yield satisfactory results for non-proportional loading is then applied to predict fatigue damage. Suitable counting method and damage rule were used to calculate the fatigue life of random loading caused by rough surface. The life analysis considering running-in is in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • For most bearings, it is a common requirement to have long durability. Especially wheel bearing fatigue life is the most important in automotive quality. The contact fatigue life analysis of automotive wheel bearing considering real raceway rough surface is presented in this paper. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions; the subsurface stress field is obtained using rectangular patch solutions.   • Background: Diabetic sensorineural damage is a complication of the sensory neural system, resulting from long-term hyperglycemia. Red ginseng (RG) has shown efficacy for treatment of various diseases, including diabetes mellitus; however, there is little research about its benefit for treating sensorineural damage. Therefore, we aim to evaluate RG efficacy in alloxan-induced diabetic neuromast (AIDN) zebrafish. Methods: In this study, we developed and validated an AIDN zebrafish model. To assess RG effectiveness, we observed morphological changes in live neuromast zebrafish. Also, zebrafish has been observed to have an ultrastructure of hair-cell cilia under scanning electron microscopy. Thus, we recorded these physiological traits to assess hair cell function. Finally, we confirmed that RG promoted neuromast recovery via nerve growth factor signaling pathway markers. Results: First, we established an AIDN zebrafish model. Using this model, we showed via live neuromast imaging that RG fostered recovery of sensorineural damage. Damaged hair cell cilia were recovered in AIDN zebrafish. Furthermore, RG rescued damaged hair cell function through cell membrane ion balance. Conclusion: Our data suggest that RG potentially facilitates recovery in AIDN zebrafish, and its mechanism seems to be promotion of the nerve growth factor pathway through increased expression of topomyosin receptor kinase A, transient receptor potential channel vanilloid subfamily type 1, and mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphorylation.

Prediction of Creep Rupture Time and Strain of Steam Pipe Accounting for Material Damage and Grain Boundary Sliding (재료손상과 입계 미끄럼을 고려한 증기배관의 크리프 파단수명 및 변형률 예측)

  • Several methods have been developed to predict the creep rupture time of the steam pipes in thermal power plant. However, existing creep life prediction methods give very conservative value at operating stress of power plant and creep rupture strain cannot be well estimated. Therefore, in this study, creep rupture time and strain prediction method accounting for material damage and grain boundary sliding is newly proposed and compared with the existing experimental data. The creep damage evolves by continuous cavity nucleation and constrained cavity growth. The results showed good correlation between the theoretically predicted creep rupture time and the experimental data. And creep rupture strain may be well estimated by using the proposed method.

Structural Analysis on Durability of Forklift due to Opening and Closing Between Forks (개폐에 따른 지게차 포크의 내구성에 대한 구조해석)

  • Stress and deformation on forklift happened at loading, unloading or moving freight are studied by structural and fatigue analysis in this study. As model 1 as closing type between forks has lower stress and stain than model 2 at opening type, model 1 has more durability than model 2. Among the cases of nonuniform fatigue loads, 'SAE bracket history' with the severest change of load becomes most unstable but 'Sample history' becomes most stable. In case of 'SAE bracket history' with the severest change of load at model 1 and 2, maximum life is shown with Cycle. Minimum damage with 854 at model 2 becomes much higher than model 1. As the gap between forks becomes open, the damage probability becomes higher. The structural result of this study can be effectively utilized with the safe and stable design of forklift by investigating prevention and durability against its damage.

  • Commercially pure copper is tested to obtain creep curves at 2500C. Constitutive relations adopting continuum damage mechanics concept is found to be appropriate to model the creep defor mation up to the tertiary stage. Microscopic observation by SEM reveals that creep condition induces cavities and microcracks subsequently. The constitutive equations along with evaluated creep parameters are implemented into finite element analysis code. The analysis reproduces creep curves under step loading as well as constant loading with reasonable accuracy. Distribution and evolution of damage under creep loading are numerically simulated for two different types of notched specimen. Predicted creep life agrees quite well with rupture test results. The influence of mesh size at notch tip on rupture time prediction is studied, and a degree of refinement is suggested for the specific notched specimens.

  • This study investigates life and damage due to structural and fatigue load at speaker placer with wall hanger type. As the small stress and deformation are shown at the models of A, B and C shapes on structural analysis, there is no problem at installing speaker placer. As the largest stress is happened at the middle part of joint on the models of A, B and C shapes, this part must be considered at the design. A shape is thought to have most fatigue damage among 3 shape models. C shape model has most excellent, but A model has least at fatigue durability. This study result is applied with the design of speaker placer and it can be useful at predicting prevention and durability against its damage.

Reliability Estimation of Gas Pipelines Damaged by External Corrosion (외부부식에 의해 손상된 배관의 신뢰성평가)

  • It is well known that pipelines have the highest capacity and are the safest and least environmentally disruptive form of transporting oil and gas. However, pipeline damage caused by both internal and external corrosion is a major concern threatening the reliability of oil and gas transportation and the soundness of the pipeline structure. In this study, we estimate the allowable damage by comparing the ASTM B31G code to a modified theory considering diverse detailed corrosive forms. The ASTM B31 G code has been developed as the evaluation method for reliability and incident prevention of damaged pipelines based on the amount of loss due to corrosion and the yield strength of materials. Furthermore, we suggest a method for estimating the expected life span of used pipelines by utilizing the reliability method based on major variables such as the depth and length of damage and the corrosion rate affecting the life expectancy of the pipelines.

Fatigue performance assessment of welded joints using the infrared thermography

  • Taking the superficial temperature increment as the major fatigue damage indicator, the infrared thermography was used to predict fatigue parameters (fatigue strength and S-N curve) of welded joints subjected to fatigue loading with a high mean stress, showing good predictions. The fatigue damage status, related to safety evaluation, was tightly correlated with the temperature field evolution of the hot-spot zone on the specimen surface. An energetic damage model, based on the energy accumulation, was developed to evaluate the residual fatigue life of the welded specimens undergoing cyclic loading, and a good agreement was presented. It is concluded that the infrared thermography can not only well predict the fatigue behavior of welded joints, but also can play an important role in health detection of structures subjected to mechanical loading.
