  • The use of a practice perspective in the analysis of information literacy represents a shift in attention towards the enactment of information literacy as a social practice, and away from the information skills approach that has dominated information literacy research and education. The sociocultural perspective that underpins a practice-oriented approach highlights the role of practice and co-participation of the community in shaping the production, reproduction and circulation of knowledge, including knowledge about the appropriateness of information skills in relation to the context in which the skills are practised. This emerging view contrasts with the conventional approach to information literacy that has focused on the information skills of individuals as something that can be learned and transferred independently of context. This paper explores two questions: what is information literacy and, how does it happen? It then goes on to identify the implications of this approach for librarians and researchers.

  • This study attempts to investigate the current stage of collection development process in small libraries through case study to eleven small libraries in Yeongnam region. Library collection is the primary element of a library and collection development is the starting point of librarians' duty. The researcher recognized the problems observed in collection development process in the case small libraries and discovered the widespread obstacles restraining the future development. Through the visits and observations, aging book collections, lack of diversity in the form of materials acquired, imbalance in subject distribution, and the imbalance in circulation are identified. Suggestions are to be added: collection development duty can not be fulfilled without proper support by local governments. While small libraries penetrate into peoples' territory, Public libraries should seek to enhance and improve their service orientation as well as a cooperative network with these small libraries.

  • The research reports the results from an investigation of various measurement elements and techniques appropriate for the economic assessment of academic libraries, with a view to apply them in future evaluation of academic libraries in Korea. Two libraries participated in the pilot study. In one library, CVM (contingency valuation method) was applied to services ranging from circulation, electronic collection, reference, user education and facility. In the second library, three different methodologies--time value, alternative service value and CVM--were all applied to measure the value of electronic collection. The research provides analyses of measurement elements used, study procedures and measurement results. Based on these analyses, the study also makes suggestions in the areas of measurement goals, service, users and the calculation of B/C ratios that need to be taken into consideration in order to execute reliable and valid assessment of academic library's value.

  • This study was conducted to develop items for evaluating the level of the digitization of libraries. For this purpose, it analyzed the literature related to the digital library, underwent a convergence process of 10 experts, and finally derived an axis of 13 different dimensions comparing the digitization of libraries. The axis is composed of acquisitions, collections (physical and online collections), classification and cataloging, circulation service, reference, user service, SNS service, the library's organization and staff, device providing service, next-generation service, and status of our library. This study conducted a survey of librarians to secure the validation of the primarily derived evaluation items regarding libraries' digitization. As a result, the average rating of the traditional evaluation items was 3.82, and the average rating of the digital evaluation items was 4.08. Therefore, it can be said that the results of this research to evaluate the digitized level of libraries have a certain degree of validity.
