  • Nouns in the Korean language are subcategorized for various frames(called SUBCAT lists) in much the same way as verbs are. Assuming a monostratal grammar and building on analyses of various 'little elements' as clitics, such as the ones given by No(1991), Chae(1995,1996), and Oh(1991), I delineate the ranges of SUBCAT lists for the Korean verbs and nouns and show that the two word-classes have heavily overlapping frames. Twenty five SUBCAT lists are identified for verbs, and twenty four for nouns, of which twenty three find associated lexical items in both. By the way of justification, I offer analyses of noun--verb collocations in terms of the new five-valued syntactic feature COLLOC along with SUBCAT, which subsume 'light verb' constructions. It is hoped that this work will have given clear syntactic underpinnings to those who are concerned with practical lexicography.

  • Since Perlmutter (1978) proposed the Unaccusativity Hypothesis, the past two decades have seen a flourish of studies investigating the potential validity of unaccusativity in Korean. The central contentious issues have been whether unaccusativity can also be assumed in Korean, and, if so, what criteria could be proposed to discern the unaccusativity among various predicates. In this paper, several suggestions made theoretically and experimentally to address the semantic and/or syntactic distinction of the two types of Korean intransitive predicates are critically reviewed and evaluated from the standpoint that there is a close correlation between syntax and lexical semantics of intransitives. It is proposed, then, that the Korean unaccusativity can be reliably differentiated through the combined semantic criteria of [${\pm}$agentive] and [${\pm}$active]. In addition, case alternations in long form negation constructions are shown to be the most reliable and valid syntactic criteria for testing Korean unaccusatives.

  • Reference string recognition is to extract individual reference strings from a reference section of an academic article, which consists of a sequence of reference lines. This task has been attacked by heuristic-based, clustering-based, classification-based approaches, exploiting lexical and layout characteristics of reference lines. Most classification-based methods have used sequence labeling to assign labels to either a sequence of tokens within reference lines, or a sequence of reference lines. Unlike the previous token-level sequence labeling approach, this study attempts to assign different labels to the beginning, intermediate and terminating tokens of a reference string. After that, post-processing is applied to identify reference strings by predicting their beginning and/or terminating tokens. Experimental evaluation using English and German reference string recognition datasets shows that the proposed method obtains above 94% in the macro-averaged F1.

  • In this paper, two new approaches to align English-Arabic sentences in bilingual parallel corpora based on the Multi-Class Support Vector Machine (MSVM) and the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) classifiers are presented. A feature vector is extracted from the text pair that is under consideration. This vector contains text features such as length, punctuation score, and cognate score values. A set of manually prepared training data was assigned to train the Multi-Class Support Vector Machine and Hidden Markov Model. Another set of data was used for testing. The results of the MSVM and HMM outperform the results of the length based approach. Moreover these new approaches are valid for any language pairs and are quite flexible since the feature vector may contain less, more, or different features, such as a lexical matching feature and Hanzi characters in Japanese-Chinese texts, than the ones used in the current research.

  • CDSS provides clinical doctors with knowledge to be required when they diagnose or make decision about treatment strategy. Arden Syntax is one of the language with which we write MLM that is a component of CDSS. It was designated as a standard by HL7/ANSI. ArdenML is an XML version of Arden Syntax. In this paper we propose a tool which translates Arden Syntax MLMs into ArdenML MLM. To this end we first defines the corresponding relation between two languages. Next we presents a modified version of Arden Syntax grammar to improve performance of lexical analysis and minimize parsing conflicts. Finally we presents syntax and semantics gaps between the both languages, which are a structural representation problem, a data type problem, and a disrelation problem. Our translator resolves such issues and generates exact ArdenML codes for an arbitrary Arden Syntax MLM.

  • This study explores the lexical-semantic structure of derived causative verbs in Korean based on Pustejovsky(1995)'s Generative Lexicon Theory (GL). Morphological causative verbs are derived from their root stems by affixing ‘-i, -hi, -li, -gi’ in Korean and the meanings of derived predicates are closely related to the meanings of their root verbs. In particular, the change of the ARGUMENT STRUCTURE by morphological derivation leads to the change of the EVENT STRUCTURE. The ARGUMENT STRUCTURES of derived causative verbs include a causer argument, which is added to the ARGUMENT STRUCTURE of their root verbs by means of the causative derivation. Their EVENT STRUCTURE has a headed process related to a causer and its result is the event which their root verbs denote. This approach can also suggest that the (in)directness of causative is dependent on is the semantics of its root verb.

  • This paper attempts to provide an alternative analysis involving categorical issues related to English gerunds. Especially, this paper rejects Maulof's approach that creates a new syntactic category gerund by mixing nominal and verbal categories. This paper identifies two syntactic structures in English gerunds: nominal gerunds and verbal gerunds. This distinction is based on syntactic and semantic characteristics of each type and is intended to account for the external distribution and endocentricity of the construction. Treating verbal gerunds syntactically as verbal categories, this paper proposes that English verbal gerunds act like other verbal categories such as infinitives whereas nominal gerunds behaves much like derived nominals. This paper proposes a few lexical rules that can take care of the two types of gerunds. The proposal can be extended to prepositional complements as well as sentential subject positions. This proposal not only resolves the issues involving distributional properties of the gerund construction but also captures syntactic parallelism observable between gerunds and other verbal constructions in English.

  • This paper argues for a need to adopt a conceptually radical approach to zero anaphora resolution in Korean. It is shown that a number of apparently conflicting constraints, mostly motivated by lexical, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic factors, are involved in determining the referential identity of zero pronouns in Korean. It is also argued that some of the major concepts of Optimality Theory can provide a good theoretical framework to predict the antecedents to zero pronouns in general. A partial formalization of 07-based constraints at the morpho-syntactic and lexico-semantical level is provided. It is argued that the lexico-semantic restrictions on adjacent expressions play the most important role in the anaphora resolution process along with a variant of the binding principle, formulated in semantic terms. Other pragmatically motivated constraints that incorporate some important intuitions of Centering Theory are proposed too.

  • This paper examines existing approaches to exceptive constructions, which typically serve to maintain the use of universal quantifiers by diminishing the domain quantified over. It places a particular focus on constructions involving Korean oyey, Dutch behalve, and English apart from, other than, and aside from. These lexical items all share an interesting semantic property that they mean either 'except' or 'besides' depending upon their linguistic contexts, but they have largely been ignored in the literature of exceptive constructions. An observation is made that the two meanings of the ambiguous exceptive words are in complementary distribution with respect to types of quantifiers and that they are not an isolated fact. Based on this, a unifying formal semantic analysis is attempted for the constructions.
