Leukemoid reaction has been rarely encountered in dogs. This report describes a case of leukemoid reaction showing extremely elevated leukocyte count. A 10-year-old female Maltese dog was presented with purulent and bloody vaginal discharge. The CBC revealed severe leukemoid reaction ($976\times10^9$ cells/l, reference range 6 to $17\times10^9$ cells/ l) and mild non-regenerative anemia. On the blood smear, elevated leukocytes consist of numerous neutrophils and monocytes only. Radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations revealed generalized enlargement of the uterus, which was filled with a complex fluid. After ovariohysterectomy, Escherichia coli was isolated from the uterine fluid. To author's knowledge, it is the new record of extreme leukemoid reaction caused by local bacterial infection in dogs.

Purpose : This study determined the prenatal and postnatal factors associated with complications and prognosis in premature infants with leukemoid reaction. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of premature infants with gestational ages <37 weeks and low birth weights (<2,500 g) who were admitted immediately after birth to the neonatal intensive care unit at the Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital between June 2005 and July 2006. A leukemoid reaction was defined as an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) >30,000/$mm^3$. The infants who had leukemoid reaction comprised the study group, while the remainder of infants made up the control group. The relationships between maternal and neonatal variables and ANC were studied. Results : Leukemoid reaction was detected in 3.1% of the study infants (8 of 252). Factors more frequently associated with infants with leukemoid reaction were as follows: maternal chorioamnionitis, high levels of maternal and infant C-reactive protein, gestational age <37 weeks, birth weight <2,500 g, low Apgar score, prolonged ventilator support, and a high incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). However, there were no significant differences with respect to the antenatal usage of steroids, the incidences of patent ductus arteriosus, necrotizing enterocolitis, intraventricular hemorrhage, retinopathy of prematurity, and mortality between the two groups. Conclusion : Leukemoid reaction in premature infants was associated with chorioamnionitis and high levels of serum C-reactive protein in mothers and infants, and BPD in infants. These findings suggest that leukemoid reaction is secondary to inflammation caused by infection.

The solid and hematologic cancer are occasionally accompanied by peripheral blood eosinophilia and suggest tumor necrosis or wide dissemination, but the mechanisms underlying this curious relationship remain obscure. The association of this eosinophilic leukemoid reaction with carcinoma seems to occur must frequently with bronchogenic carcinoma. Several mechanisms for this association were considered: eosinophil chemotactic factor, eosinophilia mediated by T-lymphocyte, and eosinopoietic hormone. we are here reporting a case of bronchoalveolar cell carcinoma of lung associated with peripheral eosinophilia in a 60-year-old male patient.

A 1-year-old, intact female, Yorkshire terrier was referred with diarrhea and depression. Fecal examination indicated overgrowth of yeast-like organisms. CBC and blood smear revealed severe leukemoid reaction with degenerative changes of neutrophils. Radiographic examination showed decreased serosal detail and organomegaly, suggesting pyometra with peritonitis. Thus, the dog was suspected as pyometra with peritonitis. Culture and molecular analysis of the yeast-like organisms revealed that overgrown yeast was Candida parapsilosis.
