  • Serological survey were conducted on the leptospiral antibody in domestic animals which were fed in the three rural village occurred human leptospirosis. Names of three villages are Shinnam-li, Shinjeop-li and Jinai-li which are located in near the northeastern part of Yeoju town in Kyunggi province. Total 66 serum samples were collected from the domestic animals in which 12 dairy cows, 10 Korean native cattle, 12 pigs and 32 dogs were included. Leptospiral antibody were detected with 4 different serovars of leptospira living antigens, such as Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae, L. pomona, L. canicola and L. tarassovi by microscopic agglutination test for each serum sample. The results are obtained as follow. 1. All 66 sera collected from the domestic animals at three villages showed negative reaction with 4 different serovars of leptospiral antigen. 2. Only one serum sample taken from a dairy cow in Shinjeop-li showed a weak positive reaction with Leptospira tarassovi. It is suggest that this positive case is not infected with L. tarassovi, but with vaccination. 3. It is indicated that all domestic animals which wen, fed in the villages occured human leptospirosis were not infected with above 4 different serovars of leptospira at least.

  • A serological survey for antibody of Leptospira spp. in canine was carried out from March to September, 1989 in Seoul. 182 serums collected from animal hospitals and keeping were collected and these were performed by using 12 different living antigens. In the microscopic agglutination test(MAT), being partial agglutination reaction at a serum dilution of 1:200 or over, we recorded it as positive. These results were compared with the species, sex and general conditions of canines, the areas and types of animal keeping. The results were summarized as followed ; 1. We detected the antibodies L. grippotyphosa 1 and L. icteroheamorrhagiae 1 in A area(total 48 heads ), L. canicola 1 and L. icterohaemorrhagiae 4 in B area(total 52 heads), L. hardjo 1 and L. icterohaemorrhagiae 2 in C area (total 32 heads), L. icterohaemorrhagiae 1 in D area(total 23 heads) L. grippotyposa 1 and L. icterohaemorrhagiae 2 in E area(total 27 heads) by MAT. There were positives for L. canicola 1, L. grippotyposa 2, L. hardjo 1 and L. icterohaemorrhagiae 10 in 5 areas by MAT. 2. The deteclive rate of leptospiral antibody in Jindo canine was 17.6% (3) among 17, Mixed 4.4% (4) among 90 and Exotic 9.3% (7) among 75 heads. 3. The Male(91 heads) was positive for 8.7%(8) and the female(91 heads) was positive for 6.5%(6). 4. In the vaccination, positive rate was 10.3% (7) among 55 heads, and in the unvaccination, positive rate was 5.5%(7) among 127 heads.

  • Leptospirosis has been known as endemic disease in Korea since 1984. Wild rodent, mostly Apodemus agrarius, has been known as an important source of leptospiral infection especially in rainy circumstances in harvest reason of rural area. The infection rates of Leptospira interrogans in field rodents, Apodemus agrarius, was investigated by culture and PCR detection of leptospiral DNA, and compared with previous data. Furthermore, the serogroup and serovar were investigated. Two hundred twenty two Apodemus agrarius were captured during October to December 1996. Spirohaetes were isolated from 22 (9.9%) and leptospiral DNA was detected in an additional six rodents (12.6%). Subsequent cross-agglutinin absorption test, monoclonal antibody reactivity classified 21 cultures among 22 isolates as Leptospira interrogans serogroup Icterohemorrhagiae serovar lai. The above data did not differ from previous survey in 1984 to 1987. There was no significant change of Leptospira interrogans infection in field rodents in Korea.

  • A serological survey was conducted to detect the type of Leptospirosis in sows. Antigen(live antigen) tested were L.icterohemorrhagiae, L.pomonal, L.canicola, L.Hardjo, L.australis, L.autumnalis, L.grippotyphosa, L.pyrogens, L.bataviae, L.hebdomadis. The survey was performed from J one 1992 to December 1992 by microscopic-agglutination test. The results were as follows 1, Among the serum samples of 92 heads of the sows, 6 heads of the sow(6.5%) were positive. 2. Among the positive samples of 6 heads, L.icterihemorrhagiae were 4 heads(4.3%) and L. pomona 2 heads (2.2%), respectively. 3. Antibody titers of positive sera were ranging from 1:200 to 1:1600. 4. The seroprevalence of leptospira in Chechon city, Chechon county, Danyang county that Chechon county(3.3%) was higher than that of other districts(1% -2.2%).

  • A serological survey for antibodies to Leptospira (L.) interrogans in dairy and Korean native cattle in Gyeongbuk area was performed using 6 different living antigens, which were L. icterohaemorrhagiae(RGA), L. canicola(Hond Utrecht IV), L. autumnalis(Akiyami A), L. australis(Ballico), L. pomona(Pomona) and L. hebdomadis(Hebdomadis), by microscopic agglutination test. In the microscopic agglutination test, greater than partial agglutination at a serum dilution of 1:300 or over was recorded as positive. In the dairy cattle(Holstein), four(4.7%) of 86 sera from 13 dairy farms were positive for L. canicola and L. pomona antibodies. In the Korean native cattle, four(3.2%) of 124 sera from the slaughter house in Taegu city were positive for L. canicola, L. icterohaemorrhagiae and L. pomona antibodies. Among the positive sera, L, canicola was dominated in this experiment.
