  • The inhibitory effect of extracts from 15 edible plants on the protease of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 was investigated. Protease activity was determined by incubating the extracts in a reaction mixture containing protease and substrate His-Lys-Ala-Arg-Val-Leu-(p-NO$_2$-Phe)-Glu-Ala-Nle-Ser-NH$_2$ to inhibit proteolytic cleavage. Of various plants tested, the leaves of Cedrela sinensis inhibited the HIV-1 protease by 42% at a concentration of 100$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml. A major flavonoid isolated from the leaves of C. sinensis, quercetin 3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnoside showed inhibitory activity of 19% at a concentration of 100$\mu$M.

  • Yew (Taxus cuspidata Sieb.) chose that grow as medicine, food, decorative plant in Korea's Kyong-Gi province surroundings. Extracts of yew extracted leaf of 250 g and stems of 300 g with 1,3-butylene glycol (1,3-BG), propylene glycol (PG) and water. As results, external appearance of leaf extract of yew was slightly brown clear extract. The pH was 5.3$\pm$0.5, and specific gravity was 1.012$\pm$0.05, and refractive index was 1.375$\pm$0.05. Also, appearance of stem's extract was slightly brown clear extract, and the pH was 5.4$\pm$0.5, and specific gravity was 1.016$\pm$0.05, and refractive index was 1.358$\pm$0.05. Oil of yew separated from seeds, and extracted polysaccharide high purity from fruits. As a result, specific gravity of oil was 0.987, and obtained 40% of yield. Total polyphenols amount of yew extract is detected 0.563% in leaves, 0.325% in stems, whereas total tannins amount contained 0.054% and 0.037% each in leaves and stems. As effect in cosmetics, the anti-oxidative effect by DPPH method is 75.0% in leaves, and stems was 64.0%. Collagen synthesis rate was shown high activity by 54.16% in stem's extract, 33.18% in leaves' extract. Also, PPE-inhibitory activities were 13.7% and 23.5% each in leaves and stems. Anti-inflammatory effect of yew seed oil displayed superior effect of 41 % than control. Polysaccharide's molecular weight that is gotten from fruits was 5$\times$10$^4$~ 3$\times$10$^{5}$ dalton, and got 20.0$\pm$5% of yield.

  • Two species, P. pyrifolia and P. ussuriensis, of the genus Pyrus native to Korea, are valuable genetic resources that can be used for food, dietary supplement, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics. Bioactive compounds of the plant leaves are the main components that are used for the products. Farmers had cultivated a few individuals from the wild to produce fruits or leaves for traditional remedy or tea; however, bioactive components of their leaves are not tested. We selected some trees from the natural stand that have distinct traits for the improvement program. We investigated the bioassay on the extracts' bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity from the selected accessions and other accessions, including newly developed cultivars. The contents of the phenolic compounds and flavonoids from the leaf extracts of the selected accessions were higher than the commonly cultivated trees in both species but lower than 'Sanhyang' in P. ussuriensis. The antioxidant capacity was measured using two assay methods, DPPH and ABST. The selected cultivars also had higher inhibitory activity than common trees. The selected accession 'Cultivar 3' in P. pyrifolia had the highest radical scavenging activity than others. Although leaves of the accessions were used only in this study, all three selected individuals have the potential for cultivar in containing high bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity.

  • We screened the methanol extracts from 133 plant species growing in Korea for antimicrobial activity against enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli 0157 : H7. Those are selected from three plant grouping ; traditional medicinal herbs, edible plants, and flowers. They were tested by disk diffusion assay. From evaluation of the inhibition zone diameter of microbial growth, we found that the flower extract of Rhododendron Schilpenbachii Max had the most significant antimicrobial activity against this bacteria. Extracts from most of the vegetables and plants did not show antimicrobial activity except for the leaves of Ginkgo biloba L. and seeds of Prunus Dallicina L. did not show antimicrobial activity except for the leaves of Ginkgo biloba L. and the seeds of Prunus sallicina L.

  • A number of laboratory and field experiments have performed with aqueous extracts from fresh leaves, fallen leaves and roots of Pinus rigida in order to investigae the effetct of the pine tree. The results obtained found its inhibitive effect on the germination and growth of tested species. Though relative germination ratio of the species was somewhat lower than the control plot, severe inhibition was observed in relative dry weight ration, These results were more obvious in aqueous extracts than in the case of leachates and similar results were also confirmed by field bioassays on the forest soil of P. rigida. Therefore, to find out the inhibitory sybstancesm 14 different kinds of KDICical substances were isolatd from the leaved of the tree by chromato-graphy and nist if them were confirmed to be phenoic compounds, The growth of lettuce was inhibition was observed in the concentration of less than 5X10-3M soluton. Phenolic compounds are assumed the substance related to the allelopathic effect of P. rigida.

  • Herbchoke solution produced by Choa pharmaceutical company contained pyroligneous liquid and extracts from artichoke leaves. Pyroligneous liquid is produced by process carbonizing Oak in 350∼400$^{\circ}C$. It contain water 96%, acetic acid 3% and organic compound 1%. There are 200 kinds of constituents including minerals, vitamin B-complex and organic acids in it. The organic acids of them were presumed as active materials. It is traditionally used for treatment of stress related disorder, hepatic disease, immune disorder, G-I disorder and inflammatory disease. Extracts from artichoke leaves are traditionally used for treatment of stress related disorder, that is, hepatic disease, dyspeptic disorder, hyperlipidemic disorder and diuretic disorder. The aim of this study was to investigate anti-stress effects of Hervchoke juice produced from Choa pharmaceutical company.

  • A number of Myristica species are used in herbal medicine for a variety of ailments. The methanol extracts of the leaves and the stem and root barks of Myristica subabulata were fractionated into petrol, dichloromethane and finally ethyl acetate. These were then screened against a total of 31 micro-organisms comprising of 13 G +ve, 12 G ve, one protozoa and 5 moulds. A broad-spectrum anti-bacterial activity was observed. As compared to fractionated the un-fractionated extracts exhibited much better level of activity.
