This paper presents a novel method for radius measurement of fillet regions of polygonal models by using optimum onhogonal planes. The objective function for finding an optimum onhogonal plane is designed based on the orthogonality between the normal vectors of the faces in a filet region and the plane that is to be found. Direct search methods are employed to solve the defined optimization problem since no explicit derivatives of the object function can be calculated. Once an optimum orthogonal plane is obtained, the intersection between the onhogonal plane and the faces of interest is calculated, and necessary point data in the fillet region for measuring radii are extracted by some manipulation. Then, the radius of the fillet region in question is measured by least squares fitting of a circle to the extracted point data. The proposed radius measuring method could eliminate the burden of defining a plane for radius measurement, and automatically find a necessary optimum orthogonal plane. It has an advantage in that it can measure fillet radii without prior complicated segmentation of fillet regions and explicit information of neighboring surfaces. The proposed method is demonstrated trough some mea-surement examples.
The demand for more accurate and realistic 3D urban models has been increasing more and more. Many studies have been conducted to extract 3D features from remote sensing data such as satellite images, aerial photos, and airborne laser scanning data. In this paper a technique is presented to extract and reconstruct 3D buildings in urban areas using airborne laser scanning data. Firstly all points in a building were divided into some groups by height difference. From segmented laser scanning data of irregularly distributed points we generalized and regularized building boundaries which better approximate the real boundaries. Then the roof points which are subject to the same groups were classified using pre-defined models by least squares fitting. Finally all parameters of the roof surfaces were determined and 3D building models were constructed. Some buildings with complex shapes were selected to test our presented algorithms. The results showed that proposed approach has good potential for reconstructing complex buildings in detail using only airborne laser scanning data.
Respiratory tubes with a length of 35mm and diameters of 10, 15, and 20mm were made for experimental purpose, and both the static$(P_s)\;and\;dynamic(P_D)$ pressures were simultaneously measured for steady flow rates ranging 1-12//sec. Least squares analysis resulted successful fitting of $P_s\;and\;P_D$ data with quadratic equations with correlation coefficients higher than 0.99(P<0.0001). The spirometric measurement standards of the American Thoracic Society(ATS) were applied to $P_s$ data, which demonstrated the smallest tube diameter of 15mm to satisfy the ATS standards. The maximum $P_D$ value of the velocity type transducer(the functional single use respiratory air flow tube) with the diameter of 15mm was estimated to be approximately $75cmH_2O$, implying more than 7 times larger sensitivity than the widely used pneumotachometers. These results showed that the velocity type respiratory air flow transducer is a unique device accomplishing miniaturization with the sensitivity increased, thus would be of great advantage to develop portable medical devices.
In the present study, impedance characteristics for AgO-Zn cell at various State-of-Charge (SoC) has been studied. The impedance measurements of AgO-Zn cell at various SoC were made over the frequency range from 100kHz to 10mHz with an amplitude 5mV. The impedance parameters have been evaluated by the analysis of the data using an equivalent circuit and a Non-linear least squares (NLLS) fitting method. The total resistances reflects the SoC of the cell. This indicates that the total resistance is important parameter for predicting SoC of AgO-Zn cell.

Snap rolling during hard turning and instability during emergency rising are important features of submarine operation. Hydrodynamics modeling using a high incidence flow angle is required to predict these phenomena. In the present study, a quasi-steady dynamics model of a submarine suitable for high-incidence-angle maneuvering applications is developed. To determine the hydrodynamic coefficients of the model, static tests, dynamic tests, and control surface tests were conducted in a towing tank and wind tunnel. The towing tank test is conducted utilizing a Reynolds number of $3.12{\times}10^6$, and the wind tunnel test is performed utilizing a Reynolds number of $5.11{\times}10^6$. In addition, least squares, golden section search, and surface fitting using polynomial models were used to analyze the experimental results. The obtained coefficients are presented in tabular form and can be used for various purposes such as hard turning simulation, emergency rising simulation, and controller design.
Using the photographic imagery of the SO galaxy NGC 5102, the equivalent luminosity profile and the fractional integrated luminosity curve have been derived. Several photometric parameters of the galaxy, such as a total magnitude ($B_T$), equivalent radius ($r^*_e$), effective surface brightness (${\mu}^*_e$), and concentration indices ($C_{21}$, $C_{32}$) were derived from the luminosity profiles. According to the decomposition method from the nonlinear least squares fitting, photometric parameters of the bulge (${\mu}_e$, $r_e$) and the exponential disk (${\mu}(0)$, ${\alpha}^{-1}$), and the bulge to total luminosity ratio (B/T) were obtained. The derived central disk surface brightness (${\mu} (0)\;=\;22.06\;{\pm}\;0.18\;mag/\Box"$) and the evaluated B/T ratio (= 0.52) of the NGC 5102 are close to the mean values (${\mu} (0)\;=\;21.65\;{\pm}\;0.3\;mag/\Box"$, B/T=0.63) of the SO galaxies. Analysis showed that a lens-like hump is embedded in the equivalent luminosity profile of the NGC 5102.

The paper presents a study regarding rubber compressibility behavior. The objective is to analyze the effect of compression degree of rubber on its mechanical properties and propose a new methodology based on reverse engineering to predict compressibility degree based on uniaxial stretching test and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). In general, rubbers are considered to be almost incompressible and Poisson's ratio is close to 0.5. Since this property is intimately related to the rubber packing density, little changes in Poisson's ratio can lead to significant changes regarding mechanical behavior. The deviatory hyperelastic constants were obtained through experimental data fitting by least squares method for the most relevant constitutive models implemented in commercial software Abaqus, such as: Neo-Hooke, Mooney-Rivlin, Ogden, Yeoh and Arruda-Boyce, whereas the hydrostatic part was determined through an optimization algorithm implemented in the Abaqus environment by Python scripting. The simulation results presented great influence of the Poisson's ratio in the rubber specimen mechanical behavior mainly for high strain levels. A conventional pure volumetric compression test was also carried out in order to compare the results obtained by the proposed methodology.

The solar chromosphere can be observed well through strong absorption lines. We infer the physical parameters of chromospheric plasmas from these lines using a multilayer spectral inversion. This is a new technique of spectral inversion. We assume that the atmosphere consists of a finite number of layers. In each layer the absorption profile is constant and the source function is allowed to vary with optical depth. Specifically, we consider a three-layer model of radiative transfer where the lowest layer is identified with the photosphere and the two upper layers are identified with the chromosphere. This three-layer model is fully specified by 13 parameters. Four parameters can be fixed to prescribed values, and one parameter can be determined from the analysis of a satellite photospheric line. The remaining eight parameters are determined from a constrained least-squares fitting. We applied the multilayer spectral inversion to the spectral data of the Hα and the Ca II 854.21 nm lines taken in a quiet region by the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) of the Goode Solar Telescope (GST). We find that our model successfully fits most of the observed profiles and produces regular maps of the model parameters. We conclude that our multilayer inversion is useful to infer chromospheric plasma parameters on the Sun.
Radiation detection systems working at high count rates suffer from the overlapping of their output electric pulses, known as pulse pile-up phenomenon, resulting in spectrum distortion and degradation of the energy resolution. Pulse tail extrapolation is a pile-up correction method which tries to restore the shifted baseline of a piled-up pulse by extrapolating the overlapped part of its preceding pulse. This needs a mathematical model which is almost always nonlinear, fitted usually by a nonlinear least squares (NLS) technique. NLS is an iterative, potentially time-consuming method. The main idea of the present study is to replace the NLS technique by an integration-based non-iterative method (NIM) for pulse tail extrapolation by an exponential model. The idea of linear extrapolation, as another non-iterative method, is also investigated. Analysis of experimental data of a NaI(Tl) radiation detector shows that the proposed non-iterative method is able to provide a corrected spectrum quite similar with the NLS method, with a dramatically reduced computation time and complexity of the algorithm. The linear extrapolation approach suffers from a poor energy resolution and throughput rate in comparison with NIM and NLS techniques, but provides the shortest computation time.
