Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effects of simulation integrated with problem based learning (S-PBL) according to the sequences of problem-based learning (PBL) and high fidelity simulation training (HFS) on knowledge, clinical performance, clinical judgment, self-confidence, and satisfaction in fourth-grade nursing students. Methods: In this randomized crossover design study, four S-PBLs on medical-surgical nursing were applied alternatively to two randomly-assigned groups of 26 senior nursing students for 8 weeks. The collected data were analyzed using an independent t-test. Results: The method of administering PBL prior to HFS led to significantly higher scores on knowledge (t=2.28, p=.025) as compared to the method of administering HFS prior to PBL. However, the latter method led to significantly higher scores on clinical performance (t=-6.49, p<.001) and clinical judgment (t=-4.71, p<.001) as compared to the method of administering PBL prior to HFS. There were no differences in the effect of the two methods on self-confidence (t=1.53, p=.128) and satisfaction (t=1.28, p=.202). Conclusion: The integration sequences of S-PBL was associated with different learning outcomes. Therefore, when implementing S-PBL, it is necessary to consider the educational goal to executes an appropriate sequence of integration.
The purpose of this study is to develop collaboration scripts as an instructional means to facilitate argumentation in computer-supported collaborative learning, and to analyze their effects. To develop collaboration scripts for argumentation, researchers used activity theory as a conceptual framework and refined the design principles by design-based research. Using LAMS, collaboration scripts for argumentation were developed based on the ArgueGraph. To examine their effects, 72 participants were divided into two groups by internal scripts and randomly allocated to one of three external scripts. Applying mixed methods, researchers analyzed argumentation competence related to the cognitive aspect, examined self-efficacy related to the motivational aspect, and identified the factors influencing collaborative learning processes and outcomes. Researchers found that the internal script is a critical factor to determine the dimensions, degrees, and duration of improvement in argumentation competence. That is, learners with higher internal scripts improved highly in the quality of single arguments, while learners with lower internal scripts improved continuously in the quality of argumentation sequences. The effects of the external scripts varied with the internal script levels and supporting periods. Besides, collaboration scripts for argumentation had positive effects on learners' self-efficacy, and learners with higher internal scripts had better self-efficacy. The factors influencing collaborative learning processes and outcomes showed different results depending on the learning context. Therefore, when scripting learner's interaction in CSCL, researchers should design the scripts adaptable to a natural context of activities.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop course outcomes for nursing students by applying Hauenstein's theory. Methods: The research was conducted in three steps as follows: identifying exit outcomes related to the Adult Nursing course, developing Adult Nursing course outcomes based on the theory of Hauenstein, and finalizing Adult Nursing course outcomes. Results: Exit outcomes achievable in Adult Nursing were generated after a needs analysis survey among students, nurses and professors was conducted and subsequently reviewed by professors specializing in the subject. For theoretical courses, the level of the course outcomes was derived from the cognitive domain, whereas, for practical courses, it was derived, in stages, from the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains. Next, using taxonomical terms that can properly address the level of each domain, course outcomes for theoretical and practical courses were determined. After expert opinion was sought, the final course outcome for the Adult Nursing course was produced. Conclusion: The results are meaningful in that valid course outcomes were developed through the process described above and are expected to greatly contribute to reaching exit outcomes and strengthen the professional capacity of nursing students.

Basic medical education is important for developing the competencies of medical doctors, and it includes basic biomedical sciences, preventive medicine, medical ethics, and clinical science. This study aimed to reveal the current status of the Korean Medical Licensing Examination (KMLE) regarding its evaluation of competencies in basic biomedical sciences. The basic medicine-related questions were screened and selected from the test forms of the KMLE (2016-2018) by personnel conducting basic biomedical science education, and the selected questions were analyzed by three independent groups of undergraduate students at Chonnam National University Medical School in terms of the learning outcomes of basic medical education. The study scope includes the proportion of basic medicine-related questions, which consist of basic medicine questions and basic medicine-related clinical medicine questions, its annual change, discipline distribution, and associated learning outcomes. The average proportions of basic biomedical sciences, preventive medicine and medical law, and clinical sciences were 2.3%, 5.8%, and 91.9% of all questions, respectively. The proportion of basic medicine-related questions, except those on preventive medicine and medical law, was 22.0% of the total, and questions on pharmacology and microbiology accounted for 83.0% of the basic medicine-related questions. The proportion of sub-enabling learning outcomes linked with basic medicine-related questions comprised 14.0% of the total outcomes for basic biomedical sciences and 30.4% for preventive medicine and medical law. It is concluded that the KMLE questions may not sufficiently cover the essential competencies of basic medical education for medical doctors, and the KMLE may need to be improved with regard to competencies in basic biomedical sciences.

Outcome-based education (OBE) is a tried-and-true teaching technique based on a set of predetermined goals. Program Educational Objectives (PEOs), Program Outcomes (POs), and Course Outcomes (COs) are the components of OBE. At the end of each year, the Program Outcomes are evaluated, and faculty members can submit many recommended measures which dependent on the relationship between the program outcomes and its courses outcomes to improve the quality of program and hence the overall educational program. When a vast number of courses are considered, bad actions may be proposed, resulting in unwanted and incorrect decisions. In this paper, a recommender system, using collaborative filtering and association rules algorithms, is proposed for predicting the best relationship between the program outcomes and its courses in order to improve the attributes of the graduates. First, a parallel algorithm is used for Collaborative Filtering on Data Model, which is designed to increase the efficiency of processing big data. Then, a parallel similar learning outcomes discovery method based on matrix correlation is proposed by mining association rules. As a case study, the proposed recommender system is applied to the Computer Information Systems program, College of Computer Sciences and Information Technology, Al-Baha University, Saudi Arabia for helping Program Quality Administration improving the quality of program outcomes. The obtained results revealed that the suggested recommender system provides more actions for boosting Graduate Attributes quality.

Purpose: We evaluated the learning curve and short-term surgical outcomes of robot-assisted distal gastrectomy (RADG) performed by a single surgeon experienced in open, but not laparoscopic, gastrectomy. We aimed to verify the feasibility of performing RADG without extensive laparoscopic experience. Materials and Methods: Between July 2012 and December 2016, 60 RADG procedures were performed by a single surgeon using the da $Vinci^{(R)}$ Surgical System (Intuitive Surgical). Patient characteristics, the length of the learning curve, surgical parameters, and short-term postoperative outcomes were analyzed and compared before and after the learning curve had been overcome. Results: The duration of surgery rapidly decreased from the first to the fourth case; after 25 procedures, the duration of surgery was stabilized, suggesting that the learning curve had been overcome. Cases were divided into 2 groups: 25 cases before the learning curve had been overcome (early cases) and 35 later cases. The mean duration of surgery was 420.8 minutes for the initial cases and 281.7 minutes for the later cases (P<0.001). The console time was significantly shorter during the later cases (168.6 minutes) than during the early cases (247.1 minutes) (P<0.001). Although the volume of blood loss during surgery declined over time, there was no significant difference between the early and later cases. No other postoperative outcomes differed between the 2 groups. Pathology reports revealed the presence of mucosal invasion in 58 patients and submucosal invasion in 2 patients. Conclusions: RADG can be performed safely with acceptable surgical outcomes by experts in open gastrectomy.
