As a worker performs a certain operation repeatedly, he tends to become familiar with the job and complete it in a very short time. That means that the efficiency is improved due to his accumulated knowledge, experience and skill in regards to the operation. Investing time in an output is reduced by repeating any operation. This phenomenon is referred to as the learning curve effect. A learning curve is a graphical representation of the changing rate of learning. According to previous literature, learning curve effects are determined by subjective pre-assigned factors. In this study, we propose a new statistical model to clarify the learning curve effect by means of a basic cumulative distribution function. This work mainly focuses on the statistical modeling of binary data. We employ the Newton-Raphson method for the estimation and Delta method for the construction of confidence intervals. We also perform a real data analysis.
As a certain job is repeatedly done by a worker, the outcome comparative to the effort to complete the job gets more remarkable. The outcome may be the time required and fraction defective. This phenomenon is referred to a learning-curve effect. We focus on the parametric modeling of the learning-curve effects on count data using a logistic cumulative distribution function and some probability mass functions such as a Poisson and negative binomial. We conduct various simulation scenarios to clarify the characteristics of the proposed model. We also consider a real application to compare the two discrete-type distribution functions.
Low flow affects various fields such as river water supply management and planning, and irrigation water. A sufficient period of flow data is required to calculate the Flow Duration Curve. However, in order to calculate the Flow Duration Curve, it is essential to secure flow data for more than 30 years. However, in the case of rivers below the national river unit, there is no long-term flow data or there are observed data missing for a certain period in the middle, so there is a limit to calculating the Flow Duration Curve for each river. In the past, statistical-based methods such as Multiple Regression Analysis and ARIMA models were used to predict sulfur in the unmeasured watershed, but recently, the demand for machine learning and deep learning models is increasing. Therefore, in this study, we present the DNN technique, which is a machine learning technique that fits the latest paradigm. The DNN technique is a method that compensates for the shortcomings of the ANN technique, such as difficult to find optimal parameter values in the learning process and slow learning time. Therefore, in this study, the Flow Duration Curve applicable to the unmeasured watershed is calculated using the DNN model. First, the factors affecting the Flow Duration Curve were collected and statistically significant variables were selected through multicollinearity analysis between the factors, and input data were built into the machine learning model. The effectiveness of machine learning techniques was reviewed through statistical verification.

Objectives: There should be an objective analysis on the academic competency for incorporating Computer-based Test (CBT) in the education of traditional Korean medicine (TKM). However, the Item Response Theory (IRT) for analyzing latent competency has not been introduced for its difficulty in calculation, interpretation and utilization. Methods: The current study analyzed responses of 390 students of 8 years to the herbology test with 14 items by utilizing Rasch model, and the characteristics of test and items were evaluated by using characteristic curve, information curve, difficulty, academic competency, and test score. The academic competency of the students across gender and years were presented with scale characteristic curve, Kernel density map, and Wright map, and examined based on T-test and ANOVA. Results: The estimated item, test, and ability parameters based on Rasch model provided reliable information on academic competency, and organized insights on students, test and items not available with test score calculated by the summation of item scores. The test showed acceptable validity for analyzing academic competency, but some of items revealed difficulty parameters to be modified with Wright map. The gender difference was not distinctive, however the differences between test years were obvious with Kernel density map. Conclusion: The current study analyzed the responses in the herbology test for measuring academic competency in the education of TKM using Rasch model, and structured analysis for competency-based Teaching in the e-learning era was suggested. It would provide the foundation for the learning analytics essential for self-directed learning and competency adaptive learning in TKM.

Purpose To evaluate a deep learning model to predict recurrence of thyroid tumor using preoperative ultrasonography (US). Materials and Methods We included representative images from 229 US-based patients (male:female = 42:187; mean age, 49.6 years) who had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer on preoperative US and subsequently underwent thyroid surgery. After selecting each representative transverse or longitudinal US image, we created a data set from the resulting database of 898 images after augmentation. The Python 2.7.6 and Keras 2.1.5 framework for neural networks were used for deep learning with a convolutional neural network. We compared the clinical and histological features between patients with and without recurrence. The predictive performance of the deep learning model between groups was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, and the area under the ROC curve served as a summary of the prognostic performance of the deep learning model to predict recurrent thyroid cancer. Results Tumor recurrence was noted in 49 (21.4%) among the 229 patients. Tumor size and multifocality varied significantly between the groups with and without recurrence (p < 0.05). The overall mean area under the curve (AUC) value of the deep learning model for prediction of recurrent thyroid cancer was 0.9 ± 0.06. The mean AUC value was 0.87 ± 0.03 in macrocarcinoma and 0.79 ± 0.16 in microcarcinoma. Conclusion A deep learning model for analysis of US images of thyroid cancer showed the possibility of predicting recurrence of thyroid cancer.
Underwater images are typically degraded due to color distortion, light absorption, scattering, and noise from artificial light sources. Restoration of these images is an essential task in many underwater applications. In this paper, we propose a two-phase deep learning-based method, Underwater Deep Curve Estimation (UWDCE), designed to effectively enhance the quality of underwater images. The first phase involves a white balancing and color correction technique to compensate for color imbalances. The second phase introduces a novel deep learning model, UWDCE, to learn the mapping between the color-corrected image and its best-fitting curve parameter maps. The model operates iteratively, applying light-enhancement curves to achieve better contrast and maintain pixel values within a normalized range. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, producing higher-quality images compared to state-of-the-art methods.

This paper presents a two stage game model which examines the effect of learning-by-doing and spillover. Increases in the firm’s cumulative experience lower its unit cost in future period. However, the firm’s rival also enjoys the experience via spillover. Unlike previous theoretical research model, a cost asymmetric market entry game model is developed between the incumbent firm and new entrant. Mathematical results show that the incumbent firm exploits the learning curve to gain future cost advantage, and that the diffusion of learning to the new entrant induces the incumbent firm to choose decreasing output strategically. As a main result, we show that the relative magnitude between the learning and spillover rate determines the market share ratio of competing firms.

In this paper, we propose a deep learning classifier for estimating the number of layers in the Earth's structure. When installing a grounding system, knowledge of the subsurface in the area is absolutely necessary. The subsurface structure can be modeled by the earth parameters. Knowing the exact number of layers can significantly reduce the amount of computation to estimate these parameters. The classifier consists of a feedforward neural network. Apparent resistivity curves were used to train the deep learning classifier. The apparent resistivity at 20 equally spaced log points in each curve are used as the features for the input of the deep learning classifier. Apparent resistivity curve data sets are collected either by theoretical calculations or by Wenner's measurement method. Deep learning classifiers are coded by Keras, an open source neural network library written in Python. This model has been shown to converge with close to 100% accuracy.

Network Intrusion detection is a rapidly growing field of information security due to its importance for modern IT infrastructure. Many supervised and unsupervised learning techniques have been devised by researchers from discipline of machine learning and data mining to achieve reliable detection of anomalies. In this paper, a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) based intrusion detection system (IDS) is proposed, implemented and analyzed. Deep CNN core of proposed IDS is fine-tuned using Randomized search over configuration space. Proposed system is trained and tested on NSLKDD training and testing datasets using GPU. Performance comparisons of proposed DCNN model are provided with other classifiers using well-known metrics including Receiver operating characteristics (RoC) curve, Area under RoC curve (AuC), accuracy, precision-recall curve and mean average precision (mAP). The experimental results of proposed DCNN based IDS shows promising results for real world application in anomaly detection systems.
Machine learning models have been widely used for landslide susceptibility assessment (LSA) in recent years. The large number of inputs or conditioning factors for these models, however, can reduce the computation efficiency and increase the difficulty in collecting data. Feature selection is a good tool to address this problem by selecting the most important features among all factors to reduce the size of the input variables. However, two important questions need to be solved: (1) how do feature selection methods affect the performance of machine learning models? and (2) which feature selection method is the most suitable for a given machine learning model? This paper aims to address these two questions by comparing the predictive performance of 13 feature selection-based machine learning (FS-ML) models and 5 ordinary machine learning models on LSA. First, five commonly used machine learning models (i.e., logistic regression, support vector machine, artificial neural network, Gaussian process and random forest) and six typical feature selection methods in the literature are adopted to constitute the proposed models. Then, fifteen conditioning factors are chosen as input variables and 1,017 landslides are used as recorded data. Next, feature selection methods are used to obtain the importance of the conditioning factors to create feature subsets, based on which 13 FS-ML models are constructed. For each of the machine learning models, a best optimized FS-ML model is selected according to the area under curve value. Finally, five optimal FS-ML models are obtained and applied to the LSA of the studied area. The predictive abilities of the FS-ML models on LSA are verified and compared through the receive operating characteristic curve and statistical indicators such as sensitivity, specificity and accuracy. The results showed that different feature selection methods have different effects on the performance of LSA machine learning models. FS-ML models generally outperform the ordinary machine learning models. The best FS-ML model is the recursive feature elimination (RFE) optimized RF, and RFE is an optimal method for feature selection.
