The morphology of the leaves and the flowers of angiosperms exhibit remarkable diversity. One of the factors showing the greatest variability of leaf organs is the leaf index, namely, the ratio of leaf length to leaf width. In some cases, different varieties of a single species or closely related species can be distinguished by differences in leaf index. To some extent, the leaf index reflects the morphological adaptation of leaves to a particular environment. In addition, the growth of leaf organs is dependent on the extent of the expansion of leaf cells and on cell proliferation in the cellular level. The rates of the division and enlargement of leaf cells at each stage contribute to the final shape of the leaf, and play important roles throughout leaf development. Thus, the control of leaf shape is related to the control of the shape of cells and the size of cells within the leaf. The shape of flower also reflects the shape of leaf, since floral organs are thought to be a derivative of leaf organs. No good tools have been available for studies of the mechanisms that underlie such biodiversity. However, we have recently obtained some information about molecular mechanisms of leaf morphogenesis as a result of studies of leaves of the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. For example, the ANGUSTIFOLIA (AN) gene, a homolog of animal CtBP genes, controls leaf width. AN appears to regulate the polar elongation of leaf cells via control of the arrangement of cortical microtubules. By contrast, the ROTUNDIFOLIA3 (ROT3) gene controls leaf length via the biosynthesis of steroid(s). We provide here an overview of the biodiversity exhibited by the leaf index of angiosperms. Taken together, we can discuss on the possibility of the control of the shapes and size of plant organs by transgenic approaches with the results from basic researches. For example, transgenic plants that overexpressed a wild-type ROT3 gene had longer leaves than parent plants, without any changes in leaf width. Thus, The genes for leaf growth and development, such as ROT3 gene, should be useful tools for the biodesign of plant organs.
The opal phytolith types in Oryza sativa L. were examined with light and scanning electron microscope, and we suggested the standard tenninoligies based on original cells of the phytoliths in situ. The distinctive fonus of opal phytoliths were observed in all plant parts such as leaf blade, leaf sheath, culm, root, glume, lemma, and palea. The phytolith fonus originated from long cell, short cell, and dennal appendages were different from part to part. The opal phytoliths derived from the long cells showed the most various form: twelve types were identified based on side wall shape. The results showed that the leaf blade did include almost all types of opal phytolith observed in the other parts of rice.f rice.
Morus alba, known as White Mulberry, is one of the most common species of mulberry found in South Korea, along with M. australis, known as Korean Mulberry. During a routine survey to investigate fungal diseases on deciduous broad-leaved trees in 2020, leaf spots were consistently observed on the White Mulberry in Sejong-si (36°30'12.8"N 127°17'34.5"E) and Wonju-si (37°15'29.6"N 128°11'37.9"E), South Korea, with a disease incidence of approximately 70 to 80%. Symptoms included circular, tan or necrotic lesions surrounded by a dark margin on leaves, which, in some cases, the lesions coalesced to form relatively large necrotic regions. The pathogen was successfully isolated from M. alba, and was identified as Cladosporium pseudocladosporioides based on the phylogenetic analysis and morphology. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of leaf spot disease on M. alba caused by C. pseudocladosporioides in South Korea.
The growth characteristics of bainite at early stage in the fast quenched spheroidal graphite cast irons containing 0.06%Mn and 0.45%Mn during austempering process, was investigated with optical and scanning electron microscope. The following results regarding the effects of Mn and isothermal heat treatment on the morphological variation of bainitic ferrite were obtained. The morphology of bainite varies from acicular below 350$^{\circ}C$ to feather shape above 350$^{\circ}C$. The period of isothermal treatment also affects the shape of bainite at the fixed temperature. At 350$^{\circ}C$, bainite is bamboo leaf-like up to 200 secs of isothermal holding time and with further increasing time up to 300 secs, changes to a mixed structure consisting of both feather and bamboo leaf and, finally becomes all feather shape at 900 secs. The morphology of bainitic ferrite formed at early stage of 300$^{\circ}C$ isothermal treatment is similar to that of bainitic ferrite formed at 250$^{\circ}C$ or 350$^{\circ}C$ with unbranched, linear ferrite. However, bainitic ferrite divides into branches with increasing isothermal treatment, which occurs more fast at 400$^{\circ}C$ than at 350$^{\circ}C$. The difference in adding amount of Mn influences the morphology of bainitic ferrite in upper bainite. The bainitic ferrite with 0.45%Mn is observed to be more stable than that with 0.06%Mn, remaining unbranched for a longer period at the same temperature.
This study was conducted to examine genetic variation on leaf characteristics of Machilus thunbergii populations. Ten populations were subjected to multivariate analysis for 9 characteristics of leaf morphology. Average length of leaf blade, leaf width, petiole length, vein number were 9.8cm, 4.0cm, 1.8cm, 8.4 respectively, while angle of leaf base and leaf apex were $67.9^{\circ}$ and $78^{\circ}$ respectively. The coefficient of variation (C.V.) on leaf characteristics was 20% which indicate similar features among the populations. Nested analysis showed statistically signigicant differences among populations as well as among individuals within populations. Genetic relationship between populations using complete linkage method showed four groups to Euclidean distance 1.2 and did not show a tendency to cluster into the same group. There were three principal components that had a meaningful eigenvalue over 1.0 among the 9 components. The explanatory power of the top three main components on the total variation was 92.8%. The first principal component (PC) was explained about 40.3% which is mainly correlated with maximum leaf width and the second PC was explained about 28.7% which is correlated with leaf blade length. The third PC was explained about 23.8% which is correlated with petiole length ($X_3$). These characters were important factors for analysis of the relationship among natural populations of M. thunbergii.
Various types of the seeding of bottle gourd widely used as a rootstock of watermelon has been required to satisfy the farmers need. The study was done to determine the effect of light quality of blue, red and far-red lights treated with light emitting diodes on growth and morphology of bottle goured seeding and chlorophyll content of its cotyledons. The lights were treated in the growth chamber for 7 days to the seeding elapsed 8 days after sowing under natural condition, and 64 hole trays with commercial bedsoil. Plant height, length and diameter of hypocotyl, leaf area of cotyledon and first true leaf, its leaf length, number of true leaves, fraction and total dry weight were measured. Red light shortened and slenderized the hypocotyl, which lengthened by far-red light and thickened by blue light. Plant height was declined in order of far-red light treatment, blue and red lights mainly due to difference of hypocotyl length, Area and length of the first true leaf became smaller and shorter under far-red light than under the other lights. However, blue light increased leaf area of cotyledons. Two cultivars cv. Yongjadaemok and cv. Kunghap had different response to the light treatments in total seedling dry weight(dw); far-red and red light treatments showed the greatest and the least dw of hypocotyl, respectively, while blue and red lights did the greatest dw of the other organs. Among the ratio of each organ dw to total dw, those of hypocotyl and true leaves were different between the light treatments; the highest ratio of hypocotyl dw to total dw was observed in far-red light treatment but the lowest was in red light treatment. Those of the true leaves were the lowest in far-red light and similar response in blue or red light treatment. Chlorophyll content of cotyledons was decreased in order of red light treatment, blue and far-red lights, meaning that short period light treatment may influence photosynthesis of seeding and afterward its growth.
Eggshell is a waste material after the usage of egg. In this work, biowaste chicken eggshells were used for preparing carbonated hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles of high purity through aqueous precipitation method at room temperature. The eggshell-derived HA will be a cost-effective bioceramics for biomedical applications and an effective material-recycling technology. Additionally, mulberry leaf extract was used as a template to regulate the morphology, size and crystallinity of HA, and the effects of pH value were also examined. Characterization of the samples was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to determine the size, shape and morphology of HA. The results indicate that only one phase of HA were synthesized in the both absence and presence of mulberry leaf extract at pH of 7 and above, while DCPD or DCPA/DCPD phase was observed at pH 4 condition. The crystallite sizes of the HA samples obviously decreased when adding mulberry leaf extract as a template, while they decreased gradually as the solution pH levels increased. With increasing pH level from 7 to 14, the rod-like HA nanoparticles gradually changed to spherical shape at pH 14. Note that, the obtained product is Mg and Sr containing A- and B-type carbonate HA at alkaline pH and it can be a potential material for biomedical applications.

In the present study, according to morphological observations followed by recent circumscriptions, we have classified the Korean taxa of the family Linderniaceae into Scrophulariaceae sensu lato has been considered in several works, though the taxa have remained undefined because identification work was mostly done according to vegetative morphological features, such as the leaf shape, leaf margins, and leaf venation. The taxa of Linderniaceae are mostly considered to be weeds and, for correct identification, it is necessary to clarify their taxonomic characteristics. Morphological studies were carried out using samples collected in the field. Micro-morphological observations of the vegetative and floral parts were also performed using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We concluded that important characteristics are reproductive morphologies viz. calyx, stamen structure, capsule shape, calyx ratio with capsule, inflorescence morphology, and seed morphology. As a result, we formulated taxa descriptions and provided a key of the genera of Linderniaceae in Korea. Lindernia crustacea (L.) F. Muell. is transferred to Torenia crustacea (L.) Cham. & Schltdl. Lindernia micrantha D. Don and L. angustifolia (Benth.) Wettstein are a synonym of Vandellia micrantha (D. Don) Eb. Fisch., Schäferh. & Kai Müll. Lindernia attenuata Muhl. and L. dubia var. major (Pursh) Pennell are a synonym of Lindernia dubia (L.). Lindernia verbenifolia (Colsm.) Pennell is a synonym of Bonnaya antipoda Druce. Our study reports the presence of four genera: Bonnaya, Lindernia, Torenia, and Vandellia, comprising six taxa under the family Linderniaceae in Korea.
This study was conducted to classify the variation in leaf and fruit morphology among natural grown 16 Cudrania tricuspidata stands. As results of the analysis in C. tricuspidata stands total 134 Species were found and as results of the analysis in leaf morphology, it was grouped as Group IV. By the analysis of variance in length, width, and weight of fruits were differed in 15 C. tricuspidata stands. The length, width, and weight of fruits were higher in Jinan and Sunchang, than Gochang, Gimje, and Goheung. By the cluster analysis of 3 fruit morphology were classified as 3 Groups. According to the results of this study C. tricuspidata leaves and fruit morphological characteristics for each group were compared by analysis there were differences between the morphological characteristics and the characteristics of the fruit did not match.
Leaf mesophyll protoplasts of Nicotiana tabacum (nitrate reductase deficient mutant) were fused with cell suspension protoplasts of albino Petunia inflata in an electric field. Hybrid cell colonies were selected for nitrate reductase proficiency and chlorophyll synthesis. Five hybrid plant lines, regenerated from the selected calli lines, were analysed by electrophoresis, number of chromosomes and morphological characters. Somtic hybrid plants showed both parent patterns in the isozymesof isoleucine aminopeptidase and esterase. The hybrids had the expected chromosome number of 62 and exhibited an intermediate floral morphology when compared with the parents, but plant height and leaf arrangement were similar to N. tabacum.
