The corrosion behavior of aluminum alloys in the $H_2SO_4$ solution was investigated based on potentiodynamic techniques. Electrochemical properties, such as corrosion potential($E_c$), passive potential($E_p$), corrosion current density($I_c$), corrosion rate(mpy), of Al-Mg-Si, Al-Cu-Si and Al-Si alloys were characterized at room temperature. Passive aluminum oxide film, which including $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and $3Al_2O_34SO_38H_2O$, were uniformly formed on the surface via the reaction of Al with $SO{_3}^{2-}$ or $SO{_4}^{2-}$ ions in the $H_2SO_4$ solution and the dependence of the corrosion behavior on the alloying element was discussed. The selective leaching of alloy element increased with increasing Cu content in the aluminum alloys.
The mono-layer cover system is composed of soils only as a filling material and various plants are planted on the surface to control the water balance in the cover system. In this paper, the mono-layer cover system was considered as an alternative landfill final cover system and developed a model that could utilize industrial by-product (especially, coal ash & phosphogypsum) as additive filling materials. The mixture of granite soil, coal ash, and phosphogypsum was placed as a cover material in a box constructed with cement. Laboratory tests were carried out to investigate the environmental effect on the utilization of coal ash & phosphogypsum and to determine the mxing ratio of each materials. In the leaching test, all materials showed lower heavy metal concentration than the threshold values of regulation. The optimum mixing ratio of materials which was applied to field model test was determined to soil (4) : coal ash (1) : phosphogypsum (1) on the volume base. Field model tests were continued from February to July, 2004 in the soil box that was constructed with cement block. It was verified that coal ash and phospogypsum mixed with soil was to be safe environmentally and the water balance of mono-layer cover system was reasonable.
Influence of $La_2O_3$ addition to $CaO-B_2O_3$-based glass on the water leaching resistance of the glass was first investigated. The optimized $La_2O_3-CaO-B_2O_3$(LCB) glass was ball milled for varying time, followed by mixing with $Al_2O_3$ crystalline phase to form $Al_2O_3$-LCB glass composites at $875^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Microwave dielectric properties of the composites were investigated as a function of the ball milling time of the LCB glass. Dielectric constant and quality factor of the composites were 6.31 and 13856 GHz, respectively, when the LCB glass was ball milled for 2h prior to mixing with $Al_2O_3$.
Influence of $La_2O_3$ addition to $ZnO-B_2O_3$-based glass on the water leaching resistance of the glass was first investigated. The optimized $La_2O_3-ZnO-B_2O_3$ (LZB) glass was ball milled for varying time, followed by mixing with $Al_2O_3$ crystalline phase to form $Al_2O_3$-LZB glass composites at $875^{\circ}C$ for lh. Microwave dielectric properties of the composites were investigated as a function of the ball milling time of the LZB glass. Dielectric constant and quality factor of the composites were 6.01 and 11676 GHz, respectively, when the LZB glass was ball milled for 2h prior to mixing with $Al_2O_3$.
Influence of $Nd_2O_3$ addition to $ZnO-B_2O_3$-based glass on the water leaching resistance of the glass was first investigated. The optimized $Nd_2O_3-ZnO-B_2O_3$ (NZB) glass was ball milled for varying time, mixing with followed by $Al_2O_3$ crystalline phase to form $Al_2O_3$-NZB glass composites at $875^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Microwave dielectric properties of the composites were investigated as a function of the ball milling time of the NZB glass. Dielectric constant and quality factor were 5.70 and 9497 GHz, respectively, when the NZB glass was ball milled for 6h prior to mixing with $Al_2O_3$.
Due to their unique properties, tungsten borides are good candidates for the industrial applications where certain features such as high hardness, chemical inertness, resistance to high temperatures, thermal shock and corrosion. In this study, conditions were investigated for producing tungsten boride powder from tungsten oxide($WO_3$) by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) followed by HCl leaching techniques. In the first stage of the study, the exothermicity of the $WO_3$-Mg reaction was investigated by computer simulation. Based on the simulation experimental study was conducted and the SHS products consisting of borides and other compounds were obtained starting with different initial molar ratios of $WO_3$, Mg and $B_2O_3$. It was found that $WO_3$, Mg and $B_2O_3$ reaction system produced high combustion temperature and radical reaction so that diffusion between W and B was not properly occurred. Addition of NaCl and replacement of $B_2O_3$ with B successfully solved the diffusion problem. From the optimum condition tungsten boride($W_2B$ and WB) powders which has 0.1~0.9 um particle size were synthesized.
Prussian blue (PB) is known to be an effective material for radioactive cesium adsorption, but its nano-range size make it difficult to be applied for contaminated water remediation. In this study, a simple and versatile approach to immobilize PB in the supporting matrix via surface functionalization was investigated. The commercially available poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) sponge was functionalized by acrylic acid (AA) to change its major functional group from hydroxyl to carboxylic, which provides a stronger ionic bond with PB. The amount of AA added was optimized by evaluating the weight change rate and iron(III) ion adsorption test. The FTIR results revealed the surface functional group changing to a carboxyl group. The surface functionalization enhanced the attachment of PB, which minimized the leaching out of PB. The $Cs^+$ adsorption capacity significantly increased due to surface functionalization from 1.762 to 5.675 mg/g. These findings showed the excellent potential of the PB-PAA-PVA sponge as a cesium adsorbent as well as a versatile approach for various supporting materials containing the hydroxyl functional group.
Photocatalytic cement is receiving attention due to its high oxidation power that oxidizes nitrogen oxides (NOx), thus contributing to clean atmospheric environment. However, there has not been a thorough investigation on durability of a parent material, cementitious material, as a result of photocatalytic reactions. In this study, durability of photocatalytic cementitious materials exposed to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas was examined. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles containing cement paste samples were exposed to cycles of NO2 with UV light, followed by wetting and drying to simulate environmental condition. The surface of samples was characterized mechanically, chemically, and visually during the cycling. The results indicate that the photocatalytic efficiency decreased with continued NO2 oxidation due to calcium carbonate formation. The pits found from SEM demonstrate that chemical deterioration have occurred, such as acid attack or leaching. In conclusion, the photocatalytic reactions and its product could alter cementitious materials chemically and mechanically which could further affect long-term durability.
