  • The experiment was crried out to evaluated the herbicidal properties of bensulfuron methyl [methyl 2-[[[[[(4, 6-dimethoxy pyrimidine-2yl) amino] carbonyl] amino] sulfonyl] methyl] benzoate]. No phytotoxicity was observed when bensulfuron methyl was applied at 3 and 6 g a.i./ 10a while the application rate 12 g a.i./10a slightly retared the growth of rice. The phytotoxicity decreased as the application time was delayed. The effect of application rate, leaching grade, transplanting depth, soil type and temperature on crop injury was little. Japonica variety (Dong-Jin) was more sensitive to bensulfuron methyl than indica X japonica variety (Sam-Kang). Bensulfuron methyl controlled effectively perennial weeds such as Sagittaria pygmaea Miq., Potamogeton diatinctus A. Benn., Cyperus serotinus Rottb., Sagittaria trifolia L., Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi. including most annual weeds except Echinochloa crus galli P. Beauv. The effect slightly decreased with lowering the temperature increasing the leaching grade. Application time and soil type employed did not affect the weeding effect.

  • A study on the recovery of cobalt and lithium from Lithium Ion Battery(LIB) scraps has been carried out by a physical treatment - leaching - solvent extraction process. The cathode scraps of LIB in production were used as a material of this experiment. The best condition for recovering cobalt from the anode scraps was acquired in each process. The cathode scraps are dissolved in 2M sulfuric acid solution with hydrogen peroxide at $95^{\circ}C$, 700 rpm. The cobalt is concentrated from the leaching solution by means of a solvent extraction circuit with bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid(D2EHPA) and PC88A in kerosene, and then cobalt and lithium are recovered as cobalt hydroxide and lithium carbonate by precipitation technology. The purity of cobalt oxide powder was over 99.98% and the average particle size after milling was about 10 lim. The over all recoveries are over 95% for cobalt and lithium. The pilot test of mechanical separation was carried out for the recovery of cobalt from the scraps. The $Co_3O_4$ powder was made by the heat treatment of $Co(OH)_2$ and the average particle size was about 10 ${\mu}m$ after grinding. The recovery was over 99% for cobalt and lithium each other and the purity of cobalt oxide was over 99.98%.

  • A pot experiment was conducted to study the effect of application rate of anaerobically digested pig slurry on the growth of Chinese cabbage and the outflow characteristics of N and P from leaching and runoff in the upland. Anaerobically digested pig slurry(ADPS) was applied rates of 0, 6, 12, and $18L\;pot^{-1}$, and Chinese cabbages were grown for 50 days. Dry matter yield of Chinese cabbage increased significantly at the rates of 6 and $12L\;pot^{-1}$, but decreased at the rate of $18L\;pot^{-1}$ due probably to the high salinity. The EC(1:5) of the soil receiving $18L\;pot^{-1}$ of anaerobically digested pig slurry was $0.28dS\;m^{-1}$, which was significantly higher than those receiving 6 and $12L\;pot^{-1}$ of anaerobically digested pig slurry. For the leachate and runoff, N and P concentration increased with the application rate of ADPS. Therefore, considering the dual goal of optimum crop growth and minimal discharge of non-point pollution sources to water system, this study suggests that a testing of a site-specific proper application rate of liquid pig slurry including ADPS is prerequisite to achieving optimum agricultural productivity while minimizing water quality degradatio.

  • In this study, we determine the optimal process conditions for selectively recovering Si from a solar cell surface by removal of impurities (Al, Zn, Ag, etc.). To selectively recover Si from solar cells, leaching is performed using HCl solution and an ultrasonic cleaner. After leaching, the solar cells are washed using distilled water and dried in an oven. Decompression filtration is performed on the HCl solution, and ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission spectroscopy) full scan analysis is performed on the filtered solution. Furthermore, XRD (X-ray powder diffraction), XRF (X-ray fluorescence), and ICP-OES are performed on the dried solar cells after crushing, and the purity and recovery rate of Si are obtained. In this experiment, the concentration of acid solution, reaction temperature, reaction time, and ultrasonic intensity are considered as variables. The results show that the optimal process conditions for the selective recovery of Si from the solar cells are as follows: the concentration of acid solution = 3 M HCl, reaction temperature = 60℃, reaction time = 120 min, and ultrasonic intensity = 150 W. Further, the Si purity and recovery rate are 99.85 and 99.24%, respectively.

  • Four kinds of soil conditioners, such as red earth, clayey tidal deposit, silty tidal deposit and tertiary deposit were evaluated for the rice growth and for the effectiveness of soil improvement in sandy paddy soil (Gangseo series) whose percolation and nutrient leaching are usually severe. Experiment was conducted at the farmer's field in Hackpo Ri, Bugog Myeon, Changyeong Gun, Gyeong Nam Province for two years (1980-1981) with using two rice varieties, Milyang 42 for 1980 and cheongcheongbyeo for 1981. For both experimental years, the grain yields were increased on the plots that were treated with soil conditioners compared with nontreated plot. The increase in grain yield was particularly high on the plots treated with clayey tidal deposit and teritary deposit. The dry weight of the plant and the uptake amount of inorganic ingredient tended to increase on the plots of clayey tidal deposit and tertiary deposit during whole rice growing season because of the residual effect of soil conditioners in the second experimental year. Cation exchange capacity, available silicate, exchangeable potassium and active iron was increased by the treatment with the soil conditoners. Especially cation exchange capacity was highest in the tertiary deposit treatment plot. Aggregation content and plastic index were increased for the all treatment plots with soil conditioner, however, hydraulic conductivity was conspicuously decreased by the tertiary deposit and clayey tidal deposit treatments.

  • To investigate tea prepared from Ixeris dentata root, color, and levels of free sugars, organic acids, cynaroside, total polyphenolics, and free amino acids were investigated using various thermal processing methods. These included natural drying(ND), hot-air drying(HAD, $75^{\circ}C$), hot-air drying after steam(HADS, steaming at $95^{\circ}C$ for 30 min) and roasting after hot-air drying(RHAD, roasting at $140^{\circ}C$ for $2{\sim}3$ min). Total free sugars, organic acids, cynaroside, and free amino acids contents were highest after ND treatment. Total polyphenolics was highest after RHAD processing. The level of cynaroside, a principal component of Ixeris dentata root, was significantly decreased by HADS. The major free sugars were fructose, glucose and sucrose. Succinic acid was prominent among organic acids, and was present at 2.25%(v/v) after ND treatment. The lightness(L), redness(a), and yellowness(b) of all dried Ixeris dentata root powders were best after RHAD treatment, but analysis of the leaching liquids after hot water treatment yielded variable results. Lightness and redness were the highest after RHAD and yellowness was the highest after ND treatment. Overall, the RHAD drying method was found to be superior to other methods, in sensory evaluation tests.

  • Laboratory leaching experiment study carried out to estimate a extent of heavy metals that could be leached out when acid rain(pH 5.0-3.0) and strong acidic solution(pH 2.5-1.0) reacted with tailings and contaminated soils from abandoned metal mines. In slightly to moderately acid conditions(pH 5.0-3.0), As, Pb and Zn dissolutions became significantly increased with decreased pH in tailing, while dissolution of these elements was very limited in contaminated soil. These results suggested that moderately acid rainwater leaches Pb, As and Zn from the tailings, while these elements would remain fixed in contaminated soil. In the pH range of 2.5-1.0(strongly acid condition), Zn, Cd and Cu concentrations of leachate rapidly increased with decreased pH in contaminated soil, while Pb, As and Co dissolutions became importantly increased in tailings. The experimental solubility of Zn. Cd and Cu was very low even at very low pH values(up to pH 1), except for CY4(Cheongyang mine). These can result from an incomplete dissolution or the presence of less soluble mineral phases. So, the solubility of heavy metals depends not only on the pH values of leachate but also on the speciation of metals associated with contaminated soils and tailings. The relative mobility of each element within failings at the pH 5.0-3.0 of the reaction solution was in the order of Pb>Zn>Cd>Co=Cu>As. In case of pH 2.5-1.0 of the reaction solution, the relative mobility of each element within contaminated soils and tailings were in the order of Zn>Cd>Cu>Co>Pb=As for contaminated soils, and Pb>Zn>Cd>hs>Co>Cu for tailings. The obtained results could be useful for assessing the environmental effects and setting up the restoration plan in the areas.

  • To establish the best rice cultivating system in the aspects of environment-loving agriculture, the amounts and patterns of nitrogen leached in the paddy soil were investigated with 7 treatments; Recommendation(R), Farmer's usual practice(FUP), Straw compost+chemical fertilizers reduced(SCF), Fresh straw+recommendation(FSC), Fresh cow manure(FCM), Cow manure compost(CMC), and no fertilization as Control(C). And SCF, FCM and CMC were applied with same amounts of total nitrogen to R. The infiltrated water samples were collected in ceramic porous cups which were buried at 60cm depth from the top. Concentrations of nitrate-N in irrigated water were $1.3mg\;l^{-1}$ on rice transplanting season when nutrients began to elute from paddy soil, and $0.4mg\;l^{-1}$ after breaking off irrigation. But it was $4-6mg\;l^{-1}$ in rice growing period. The maximum concentration of nitrate-N in leachate was not more than $7mg\;l^{-1}$ during rice cultivation. The amounts of nitrogen leached in R, FUP, SCF, FSR, FCM, CMC and C were 59, 63, 25, 41, 24, 27, $17kg\;ha^{-1}y^{-1}$ respectively. Nitrogen leaching was decreased to about 30% by supplement of fresh rice straw(FSC) to R. Furthermore, it was possible to reduce to over 50% of nitrogen leaching by reducing chemical fertilizer application(CF), or by substituting of chemical fertilizers with fresh cow manure(FCM) or cow manure compost(CMC). In added organic fertilizer treatments, the amounts of infiltrated nitrogen were less $13-46kg\;ha^{-1}y^{-1}$ than that of input by irrigation. This experiment showed that nutrients leaching was minimized by substitution of chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizer or by application of straw with chemical fertilizers in rice paddy soil and rice cultivation with suitable fertilizer management can work as a purifier rather than contaminator of water.

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of ultrasonic bath in tissue preparation for transmission electron microscopy. The method used standard reagents and media, and employed ultrasonic bath agitation to accelerate fluid exchange. The liver kidney, stomach and cardiac muscle tissues of male Sprague-Dawley rats were used for the experiment, and the experimental design was divided into 4 groups; The control group using rotators (Traditional method, 1,625 mins) and the three experimental groups using ultrasonic bath (UB) in the primary fixation through the infiltration processes (UB I; 62.5 mins, UB II; 125 mins, UB III; 250 mins). The results were as follows; 1. In the control group, tissues were easily sectioned, and showed well preserved intact membranes, and cell organelles such as mitochondria, lysosome, peroxisome, rough endoplasmic reticulum and smooth endoplasmic reticulum. 2. In the UB treated group I, tissues showed holes due to the inadequate removal of both water and fluids used in the dehydration process. Also the mitochondria of cell organelles, especially, showed swollen intracristal spaces and dense matrices due to poor fixation. 3. In the UB treated group II, tissues showed good preservation of cell organelles and specimen slice sections. Also, no holes were observed. 4. In the UB treated group III, tissues showed leaching of structural components in the cytoplasm, but no holes were observed. In conclusion, the ultrasonic bath procedure takes approximately 120 minutes from specimen fixation to resin infiltration and gives excellent results.

  • This research was performed to test the hypothesis that the optimal fertilization rate for red pepper is changed by soil moisture condition. The experiment was conducted in rainfall-intercepted fields in Suwon, South Korea from 2002 to 2003. Soil was irrigated at 30, 50, or 80 kPa of soil moisture tension at 20 cm soil depth in 2002 and 30, 50, 100, or 150 kPa in 2003. For both years, fertilization was performed with four levels: none, 0.5, 1, and 1.5 times of the recommended N, P, and K fertilization rate. The irrigation amount was the greatest at 30 kPa irrigation while the water use efficiency increased with decrease of irrigation amount. The Irrigation amount was 508 mm at 30 kPa irrigation and ranged from 355 mm to 435 mm at 50 kPa irrigation. The maximum yield was found at 30 kPa irrigation and 1.5 times of the recommend fertilization rate in 2002 and 2003. The yield index of red pepper increased linearly with the fertilization rate at 30 kPa which implied that excess irrigation induced nutrient leaching and reduced nutrient availability. The maximum yield in 50 kPa and 80 kPa was found at the recommend fertilization rate while the yield decreased by fertilization at 100 kPa and 150 kPa irrigation. It implies that reduction of fertilization is the feasible practice to mitigate drought stress in fields without stable irrigation resources.
