  • The spent petrochemical catalyst used in the manufacturing process of terephthalic-acid contains valuable metals such as cobalt and manganese. To recover these metals, sulfuric acid leaching was performed with hydrogen peroxide as a reducing agent. Low extractions of Mn, Co and Fe were obtained by sulfuric acid leaching without reducing agent. With adding hydrogen peroxide as a reducing agent, the high extraction of these metals could be obtained. Different from general leaching experiment, the extraction rates of metal components were decreased with increasing reaction temperature in this case. Under the optimum condition, the extraction rates of Mn, Co and Fe were 93.0%, 87.0% and 100% respectively.

  • The objective of this study is to optimize the leaching conditions of sequential leaching and extracting processes for selective Ni recovery from spent Ni-Mo-based catalyst. The selective Ni recovery process consists of two processes of leaching and extracting process. In this 2-step process, Ni component is dissolved from solid spent Ni-Mo-based catalyst into leaching agent in leaching process and sequentially extracted to Ni complex with an extracting agent in the extracting process. The solutions of nitric acid ($HNO_3$), ammonium carbonate ($(NH_4)_2CO_3$) and sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$) were used as a leaching agent in leaching process and oxalic acid was used as an extracting agent in extracting process. $HNO_3$ solution is the most efficient leaching agent among the various leaching agent. Also, the optimized leaching conditions for the efficient and selective Ni recovery were the leaching temperature of $90^{\circ}C,\;HNO_3$ concentration of 6.25 vol% and elapsed time of 3 h. As a result, Nickel oxalate having the highest yield of 88.7% and purity of 100% was obtained after sequentially leaching and extracting processes under the optimized leaching conditions.

  • Recycling technologies would be required in consideration of increasing demand in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, the leaching behavior of Ni, Co and Mn is investigated with ammoniacal medium for spent cathode active materials, which are separated from a commercial LIB pack in hybrid electric vehicles. The leaching behavior of each metal is analyzed in the presence of reducing agent and pH buffering agent. The existence of reducing agent is necessary to increase the leaching efficiency of Ni and Co. The leaching of Mn is insignificant even with the existence of reducing agent in contrast to Ni and Co. The most conspicuous difference between acid and ammoniacal leaching would be the selective leaching behavior between Ni/Co and Mn. The ammoniacal leaching can reduce the cost of basic reagent that makes the pH of leachate higher for the precipitation of leached metals in the acid leaching.

  • Methanesulfonic acid (MSA) can be considered effective in the leaching of metals because of its advantageous physical and chemical properties. The chemical reactivities of MSA and sulfuric acid were compared based on their structures and the dissolution data of Co and Ni metal. The inductive and resonance effects play a vital role in the chemical reactivities of these two acids. The dissolution percentages of Co and Ni in the sulfuric acid solution were higher than those in the MSA solution under the same experimental conditions. Considering the strong acidity of MSA and the high solubility of its metal salts, MSA can be employed as a leaching agent for the recovery of metals.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of a solidifying agent for recycling the fine powder separated from the nuclear power plant decommissioned concrete as a solidifying agent(SA) for radioactive waste. In order to evaluate the performance of the solidifying agent, a powder simulating the fine powder of waste concrete separated from the dismantled concrete of a nuclear power plant was produced, and the main variables were the type of binder and the replacement ratio of zeolite. The solidifying agent was evaluated for fluidity performance, compressive strength, and leaching resistance to non-radioactive cesium. The compressive strength of SA increased as the zeolite replacement ratio increased, and the SA containing 5% or more of zeolite showed a compressive strength that was 1.4 to 1.7 times higher than the acceptance criteria. The cesium leaching index of all specimens was 6 or higher, satisfying the acceptance criteria, and the leaching index of SA was 1.47~1.63 times higher than that of OPC. In particular, the average leaching index after 28 days of the 5% zeolite-substituted solidifying agent was 9.15, which was improved by about 6.4% compared to OPC, and it was confirmed that the zeolite was effective in improving the leaching resistance to cesium ions by showing stable performance over the entire period.

  • Cobalt is abundant only in some countries including Democratic Republic of the Congo. It would be necessary to secure overseas Co ores and Co extraction technology. Two kinds of matte varying the sulfur content were manufactured by smelting reduction of Co concentrate containing ~8 wt% Co, ~19 wt% Cu, and ~3 wt% Fe. The amount of Co, Cu and Fe was concentrated to 19~21 wt%, 39~41 wt%, and 7~9 wt% respectively in the resulting matte. High-pressure leaching of matte was performed in an autoclave with considering the effect of oxidizing agent, $H_2SO_4$ concentration as a lixiviant, and the amount of sulfur added to the matte. An oxidizing agent (oxygen) is necessary to improve Co leaching efficiency enabling usage of a dilute $H_2SO_4$ leaching agent. An increase in $H_2SO_4$ concentration prevents selective leaching of Co, and the sulfur content in matte has a minor influence on the Co leaching efficiency.

  • Fundamental study has been made on the recovery of copper from the electronic scrap by hydrometallurgical process. Nitric acid was used as a leaching agent to dissolve the metals such as Cu, Sn, Pb, Fe etc. from the crushed electronic scraps. TBP was employed to extract nitric acid from the strong nitric acid leaching solutions and to reclaim nitric acid. From the experimental results, Cu was effectively leached by 3.0-4.0 M nitric acid. And 95% of nitric acid in the leaching solution was extracted by 60% TBP, and 98% of nitric acid was stripped from the loaded organic phase by distilled water and it was possible to reuse as a leaching agent.

  • The extration of vanadium and nickel from heavy oil fly ash was carried out by using water ans sulfuric acid as leaching agent. In the leaching with water, vanadium and nickel were extracted 86% and 88% respectively under pulp density of 25g/l, room temperature and leaching time of 60 minutes, but extraction of vanadium decreased with increasing leaching time. Addition of oxidant decreased the extractions of vanadium and nickel, and roasting of fly ash at temperature higher than $300^{\circ}C$ before water leaching decreased the vanadium extraction to about zero. In the leaching with 1N sulfuric acid, the extractions of vanadium and nickel both increased to 96% and the addition of oxidant did not affect the extraction of these metals.

  • The leaching behaviors of zinc and manganese oxides of spent alkaline manganeses battery in sulfuric acid solution by using $H_{2}O_{2}$ as a reducing agent were investigated according to the concentration of $H_{2}SO_{4}$, temperature, reaction time, and the amount of $H_{2}O_{2}$. The experimental results of zinc and manganeses dissolution rates obtained without a reducing agent at 100 g/L solid/liquid ratio, 3.0 M $H_{2}SO_{4}$, $60^{\circ}C$ and 200 r.p.m. were 97.7% and 43.5%, respectively. On the other hand, zinc and manganeses dissolution rates obtained by adding 30 mL reducing agent at $60^{\circ}C$ were 99.6% and 97.1%, respectively. The addition of the reducing agent increased the leaching of manganese by two-fold compared to the absence of a reducing agent. In case of adding over 30 mL $H_{2}O_{2}$, however, the leaching rates of zinc and manganeses were independent of reducing agent amounts.
