  • A time domain method is presented for soil-structure interaction analysis under seismic excitations. It is based on the finite element formulation incorporating infinite elements for the far field soil region. Equivalent earthquake input forces are calculated based on the free field responses along the interface between the near and far field soil regions utilizing the fixed exterior boundary method in the frequency domain. Then, the input forces are transformed into the time domain by using inverse Fourier transform. The dynamic stiffness matrices of the far field soil region formulated using the analytical frequency-dependent infinite elements in the frequency domain can be easily transformed into the corresponding matrices in the time domain. Hence, the response can be analytically computed in the time domain. A recursive procedure is proposed to compute the interaction forces along the interface and the responses of the soil-structure system in the time domain. Earthquake response analyses have been carried out on a multi-layered half-space and a tunnel embedded in a layered half-space with the assumption of the linearity of the near and far field soil region, and results are compared with those obtained by the conventional method in the frequency domain.

  • Propagation of the generalized Rayleigh waves in an elastic half-space covered by an elastic layer for different initial stress combinations and imperfect contact conditions is investigated. Three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in initially stressed bodies in plane-strain state is employed, the corresponding dispersion equation is derived and an algorithm is developed for numerical solution to this equation. Numerical results on the influence of the initial stress patterns and on the influence of the contact conditions are presented and discussed. The case where the external forces are "follower forces" is considered as well. These investigations provide some theoretical foundations for the study of the near-surface waves propagating in layered mechanical systems and can be successfully used for estimation of the degree of the bonded defects between layers, fault characteristics and study of the behavior of seismic surface waves propagating under the bottom of the oceans.

  • In this paper, two dimensional vertical and comer infinite elements which can include multiple wave components to model underlying half space are developed. These elements are natural and economical to model underlying stiff half space or rock. To verify the behavior of these infinite elements, vertical, horizontal, and rocking compliances of a rigid strip foundation on a viscoelastic soil profile are analyzed and compared with those of Tzong and Penzien who used the boundary solution method. Good agreements are noticed between the two methods. The influence of material properties like Poisson's ratio, material damping, and stiffness ratio of layers as well as the influence of geometrical properties such as layer thicknesses and depth of foundation embedment are studied. Example analysis is carried out for the shaking table which is located in KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials), and the vertical and horizontal displacements of the analysis are compared with the measured, and show good results and demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents a method of seismic analysis for a cylindrical liquid storage structure on horizontally layered half-space considering the effects of the interior fluid and exterior soil medium in the frequency domain. the horizontal and rocking motions of the structures are included in this study. The fluid motion is expressed in terms of analytical velocity potential function which can be obtained by solving the boundary value problem including the sloshing behavior of the fluid as well as deformed configuration of the structure. The effect of the fluid is included in the equation of motion as the impulsive added mass and a frequency-dependent convective added mass along the nodes on the wetted boundary with structure. The soil medium is presented using the 3-D axisymmetric finite elements and dynamic infinite elements. The present method can be applied to the structures embedded in ground as well as on ground since it models the soil medium directly as well as the structure. For the purpose of vertification dynamci characteristics of a tank on homogeneous half-space is analyzed. Comparison of the present results with those by others shows good agreement.

  • Dynamic equilibrium equations for finite element analysis were derived for the free field one-dimensional shear wave propagation through the horizontally layered soil deposits with the elastic half-space. We expressed Rayleigh's viscous damping consisting of mass and stiffness proportional terms. We considered two cases where damping matrices are defined in the total and relative displacement fields. Two forms of equilibrium equations are presented; one in terms of total motions and the other in terms of relative motions. To evaluate the performance of new equilibrium equations, we conducted two sets of site response analyses and directly compared them with the exact closed-form frequency domain solution. Results show that the base shear force as earthquake load represents the simpler form of equilibrium equation to be used for the finite element method. Conventional finite element procedure using base acceleration as earthquake load predicts exact solution reasonably well even in soil deposits with unrealistically high damping.

  • This paper presents a study of soil-structure interaction problems using infinite elements. The infinite elements are formulated for homogeneous and layered soil media, based on approximate expressions for three components of propagating waves, namely Rayleigh, compressive and shear waves. The integration scheme which was proposed for problems with single wave component by Zienkiewicz is expanded to the multi-wave problem. Verifications are carried out on rigid circular footings which are placed on and embedded in elastic half space. Numerical analysis is performed for a containment structure of a nuclear power plant subjected seismic excitation.
