This paper has been made to investigate the thermal performance characteristics for the several types of heat sinks such as extruded heat sink, aluminum foam heat sink, layered heat sink. The various types heat sinks are prepared and tested for natural convection as well as forced convection. The experimental results for natural convection are compared to those for three types of heat sink so that the appropriate heat sink can be designed or chosen according to the heating conditions. The overall heat transfer performances for layered heat sink, extruded heat sink and aluminum foam heat sink are almost comparable to those under natural convection and forced convection. The forced convection of layered heat sink become 1.2 times as high as those of extruded heat sink, and the forced convection of extruded heat sink become 1.2 times as high as those of aluminum foam heat sink. This study shows that bar height, bar distance and number of bar for layered heat sink are important parameters, which have a serious influence on thermal performance for layered heat sinks.

Free axisymmetric vibrations of layered cylindrical shells of variable thickness are studied using spline function approximation techniques. Three different types of thickness variations are considered namely linear, exponential and sinusoidal. The equations of axisymmetric motion of layered cylindrical shells, on the longitudinal and transverse displacement components are obtained using Love's first approximation theory. A system of coupled differential equations on displacement functions are obtained by assuming the displacements in a separable form. Then the displacements are approximated using Bickley-spline approximation. The vibrations of two-layered cylindrical shells, made up of several types of layered materials and different boundary conditions are considered. Parametric studies have been made on the variation of frequency parameter with respect to the relative layer thickness, length ratio and type of thickness variation parameter.
Layered silicate was synthesized at hydrothermal condition from silica adding to various materials. Nano-clay was synthesized by intercaltion of various amine compounds into synthetic layered silicate. The products were analysed by XRD, SEM, and FT-IR in order to examine the condition of synthesis and intercalation. From the results, it was confirmed that kaolinite was synthesized from precipitated silica and gibbsite at $220^{\circ}C$ during 10 days, and hetorite was synthesized from silica sol at $100^{\circ}C$ during 48 h. Na-Magadiite was synthesized from silica gel at $150^{\circ}C$ during 72 h, and Na-kenyaite was synthesized from silica gel at $160^{\circ}C$ during 84 h. Nano-clay was prepared using synthetic layered silicate intercalated with various amine compounds. Kenyaite was easily intercalated by various organic compounds, and has the highest basal-spacing value among other layered silicates. Basal-spacing was changed according to the length of alkyl chain of amine comopounds. Polymer can be easily intercalated by dispersion with large space of interlayer. Finally, epoxy/nano-clay nanocomposite can be easily prepared.

This paper evaluates the performance and effectiveness of a layered coding scheme for an integrated mobile satellite systems, where the main target services are multimedia broadcasting and multicasting services (MBMS). In this integrated system, the satellite and complementary ground components (CGC) cooperate to provide high quality services. A layered coding scheme is a receiver driven adaptive schemes which adapts to the channel condition at the receiver. In this paper, we introduce a layered turbo coding scheme, and evaluates the performance in various scenarios, and discuss its effectiveness. The demonstrated results in the paper can be utilized in order to design an efficient integrated mobile satellite system, in the future.
This study developed biodegradable bi-layered drug-eluting beads and investigated the in-vitro release of fluorouracil and cisplatin from the beads. To manufacture the drug-eluting beads, poly[(d,l)-lactide-co-glycolide] (PLGA) with lactide:glycolide ratios of 50:50 and 75:25 were mixed with fluorouracil or cisplatin. The mixture was compressed and sintered at $55^{\circ}C$ to form bi-layered beads. An elution method was employed to characterize the release characteristic of the pharmaceuticals over a 30-day period at $37^{\circ}C$. The influence of polymer type (i.e., 50:50 or 75:25 PLGA) and layer layout on the release characteristics was investigated. The experiment suggested that biodegradable beads released high concentrations of fluorouracil and cisplatin for more than 30 days. The 75:25 PLGA released the pharmaceuticals at a slower rate than the 50:50 PLGA. In addition, the bi-layered structure reduced the release rate of drugs from the core layer of the beads. By adopting the compression sintering technique, we will be able to manufacture biodegradable beads for long-term drug delivery of various anti-cancer pharmaceuticals.
This paper presents results for impedance (and compliance) functions and input motions of foundations in a layered half-space computed on the basis of a procedure that combines a consistent transmitting boundary with continued-fraction absorbing boundary conditions which are accurate and effective in modeling wave propagation in various unbounded domains. The effects of obliquely incident seismic waves in a layered half-space are taken into account in the formulation of the transmitting boundary. Using the numerical model, impedance (and compliance) functions and input motions of rigid circular foundations on the surface of or embedded in a homogeneous half-space are computed and compared with available published results for verification of the procedure. Extrapolation methods are proposed to improve the performance in the very-low-frequency range and for the static condition. It is concluded from the applications that accurate analysis of foundation dynamics and soil-structure interaction in a layered half-space can be carried out using the enhanced consistent transmitting boundary and the proposed extrapolations.
This research presented the heat resistance characteristics of heat sink which is newly designed through the experiment. For the same volume and base plate of heat sinks, the experiment of heat transfer characteristics was conducted for forced convection of layered type heat sink. The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the layered type heat sink were compared for the various kinds of fin pitches, fin heights and heights of heat sink. The results show that thermal resistance is decreased as the height of heat sink increases and the fin height and fin pitch decrease, From the experimental data of layered type heat sink, the correlation equation of Nusselt number was obtained as follows ; $$Nu=0.845{\cdot}Re^{0.393}{\cdot}(\frac{f_h}{D_h})^{0.160}{\cdot}(\frac{f_p}{D_h})^{0.372}{\cdot}(\frac{H_{hs}}{D_h})^{-0.942}$$
Hydrogel scaffolds composed of multiple components are promising platform in tissue engineering as a transplantation materials or artificial organs. Here, we present a new fabrication method for implementing multi-layered macroscopic hydrogel scaffold composed of multiple components by controlling height of hydrogel layer through precise control of ultraviolet (UV) energy density. Through the repetition of the photolithography process with energy control, we can form several layers of hydrogel with different height. We characterized UV energy-dependent profiles with single-layered PEGDA posts photocrosslinked by the modular methodology and examined the optical effect on the fabrication of multi-layered, macroscopic hydrogel structure. Finally, we successfully demonstrated the potential applicability of our approach by fabricating various macroscopic hydrogel constructs composed of multiple hydrogel layers.

In the fabrication of magnetic adsorbent by incorporating iron species on base materials with layered structure, there can be a potential loss of adsorption capacity from the penetration of dissolved iron species into the structure. This work newly synthesized a magnetic adsorbent by incorporating nano magnetite and glucose into layered metal sulfide via hydrothermal treatment, and tested the removal efficiencies of cesium ions (Cs+) by the adsorbents fabricated under different conditions (final temperature and glucose mass ratio). As a result, the optimal fabrication condition was found to be mass ratio of 1 (layered metal sulfide): 0.1 (nano magnetite): 0.4 (glucose) and final temperature of 160℃. As-prepared adsorbent possessed good adsorption ability of Cs+ (54.8 mg/g) without a significant loss of adsorption capacity from attaching glucose and nano magnetite onto the surface.
In this work, we proposed a low-complexity hybrid layered tabu-likelihood ascent search (LTLAS) algorithm for large multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. The conventional layered tabu search (LTS) approach involves many partial reactive tabu searches (RTSs), and each RTS requires an initialization and searching phase. In the proposed algorithm, we restricted the upper limit of the number of RTS operations. Once RTS operations exceed the limit, RTS will be replaced by low-complexity likelihood ascent search (LAS) operations. The block-based detection approach is considered to maintain a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) detection performance. An efficient precomputation technique is derived, which can suppress redundant computations. The simulation results show that the bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed detection method is close to the conventional LTS method. The complexity analysis shows that the proposed method has significantly lower computational complexity than conventional methods. Also, the proposed method can reduce almost 50% of real operations to achieve a BER of 10-3.
