This work presents numerical optimization for design of staggered arrays of dimples printed on opposite surfaces of a cooling channel with a fast and elitist Non-Dominated Sorting of Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) of multi-objective optimization. As Pareto optimal front produces a set of optimal solutions, the trends of objective functions with design variables are predicted by hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The problem is defined by three non-dimensional geometric design variables composed of dimpled channel height, dimple print diameter, dimple spacing and dimple depth to maximize heat transfer rate compromising with pressure drop. Twenty designs generated by Latin hypercube sampling were evaluated by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver and the evaluated objectives were used to construct Pareto optimal front through hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The optimum designs were grouped by k-mean clustering technique and some of the clustered points were evaluated by flow analysis. With increase in dimple depth, heat transfer rate increases and at the same time pressure drop also increases, while opposite behavior is obtained for the dimple spacing. The heat transfer performance is related to the vertical motion of the flow and the reattachment length in the dimple.
Quantification of uncertainties in the source term estimations by a large computer code, such as MELCOR and MAAP, is an essential process of the current Probabilistic safety assessment. The main objective of the present study is to investigate the applicability of a combined procedure of the response surface method (RSM) based on input determined from a statistical design and the Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) technique for the uncertainty analysis of CsI release fractions under a Hypothetical severe accident sequence of a station blackout at Younggwang nuclear power plant using MAAP3. OB code as a benchmark problem. On the basis of the results obtained in the present work, the RSM is recommended to be used as a principal tool for an overall uncertainty analysis in source term quantifications, while using the LHS in the calculations of standardized regression coefficients (SRC) and standardized rank regression coefficient (SRRC) to determine the subset of the most important input parameters in the final screening step and to check the cumulative distribution functions obtained by RSM. Verification of the response surface model for its sufficient accuracy is a prerequisite for the reliability of the final results that can be obtained by the combined procedure proposed in the present work.

Structural integrity assessment technique for pavement system is studied considering the uncertainties among the material properties. The artificial neural networks technique is applied for the inverse analysis to estimate the elastic modulus based on the measured deflections from the FWD test. A computer code based on the spectral element method was developed for the accurate and fast analysis of the multi-layered soil structures, and the developed program was used for generating the training and testing patterns for the neural network. Neural networks was applied to estimate the elastic modulus of pavement system using the maximum deflections with and without the uncertainties in the material properties. It was found that the estimation results by the conventiona1 neural networks were very poor when there exist the uncertainties and the estimation results could be significantly improved by adopting the proposed method for generating training patterns considering the uncertainties among material properties.

To provide tile information ell severe accident progression is very important for advanced or new type of nuclear power plant (NPP) design. A parametric study, therefore was performed to investigate the effect of thermal hydraulic design parameters ell severe accident progression of pressurized water reactors (PWRs), Nine parameters, which are considered important in NPP design or severe accident progression, were selected among the various thermal hydraulic design parameters. The backpropagation neural network (BPN) was used to determine parameters, which might more strongly affect the severe accident progression, among mile parameters. For training. different input patterns were generated by the latin hypercube sampling (LHS) technique and then different target patterns that contain core uncovery time and vessel failure time were obtained for Young Gwang Nuclear (YGN) Units 3&4 using modular accident analysis program (MAAP) 3.0B code. Three different severe accident scenarios, such as two loss of coolant accidents (LOCAs) and station blackout(SBO), were considered in this analysis. Results indicated that design parameters related to refueling water storage tank (RWST), accumulator and steam generator (S/G) have more dominant effects on the progression of severe accidents investigated, compared to tile other six parameters.
A simplified safety assessment is carried out on rock-cavern type disposal of LLW using the analytical repository source term (REPS) model. For reliable prediction of the leach rates for various radionuclides, degradation of concrete structures, corrosion rate of waste container, degree of corrosion on the container surface, and the characteristics of radionuclides are considered in the REPS model. The results of preliminary assessment show that Cs-137, Ni-63, and Sr-90 are dominant. For the parametric uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, Latin hypercube sampling technique and rank correlation technique are applied. The results of the potential public health impacts show that radiological dose to intruder in the worst case scenario will be negligible and that more attention should be given to near-field performance.

This study compares the Residual ultimate longitudinal strength - grounding Damage index (R-D) diagrams produced by two analysis methods: the ALPS/HULL Intelligent Supersize Finite Element Method (ISFEM) and the design formula (modified Paik and Mansour) method - used to assess the safety of damaged ships. The comparison includes four types of double-hull oil tankers: Panamax, Aframax, Suezmax and VLCC. The R-D diagrams were calculated for a series of 50 grounding scenarios. The diagrams were efficiently sampled using the Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) technique and comprehensively analysed based on ship size. Finally, the two methods were compared by statistically analysing the differences between their grounding damage indices and ultimate longitudinal strength predictions. The findings provide a useful example of how to apply the ultimate longitudinal strength analysis method to grounded ships.

Purpose: Since the large hospitals are one of the most intensive energy users among building types in Korea, it is important to investigate and apply appropriate energy conservation measures. There are many researches on energy conservation measures for HVAC system in hospitals, but only few useful guidelines for envelope design variables were existed. The building envelope is one of the important factors to building energy consumption and patients' comfort. The purpose of this study is to suggest the most influential envelope design variables for each end-use energy demand. Methods: 100 samples were generated by LHS(Latin Hypercube Sampling) method. After energy performance simulation, global sensitivity analysis was performed by the regression method. DesignBuilder, Simlab 2.2 and JEPlus were used in this process. Results: The most influencing variables are SHGC, SHGC and VT for heating, cooling, and lighting, respectively. However, the most influencing variable for total energy demand is WWR(Window to Wall Ratio). The analysis was conducted based on the coefficient of variance results. Implications: The six envelop design variables were ranked according to the end-use energy demand.
In this paper, a procedure to develop fragility curves of structures equipped with semi-active tuned mass dampers (SATMDs) considering multiple failure criteria has been presented while accounting for the uncertainties of the input excitation, structure and control device parameters. In this procedure, Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) method has been employed to generate 30 random SATMD-structure systems and nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) has been conducted under 20 earthquakes to determine the structural responses, where failure probabilities in each intensity level have been evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method. For numerical analysis, an eight-story nonlinear shear building frame with bilinear hysteresis material behavior has been used. Fragility curves for the structure equipped with optimal SATMDs have been developed considering single and multiple failure criteria for different performance levels and compared with that of uncontrolled structure as well as structure controlled using passive tuned mass damper (TMD). Numerical analysis has shown the capability of SATMDs in significant enhancement of the seismic fragility of the nonlinear structure. Also, considering multiple failure criteria has led to increasing the fragility of the structure. Moreover, it is observed that the influence of the uncertainty of input excitation with respect to the other uncertainties is considerable.
Quantification of infiltration rate is an important issue in HVAC system design. The infiltration in buildings depends on many uncertain parameters that vary with significant magnitude and hence, the results from standard deterministic simulation approach can be unreliable. The authors utilize uncertainty analysis In predicting the airflow rates. The paper presents relevant uncertain parameters such as meteorological data, building parameters (leakage areas of windows, doors, etc.), etc. Uncertainties of the aforementioned parameters are quantified based on available data from literature. Then, the Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) method was used for the uncertainty propagation. The LHS is one of the Monte Carlo simulation techniques that is suited for our needs. The CONTAMW was chosen to simulate infiltration phenomena in a residential apartment that is typical of residential buildings in Korea. It will be shown that the uncertainty propagating through this process is not negligible and may significantly influence the prediction of the airflow rates.

Conditional spectra (CS) are applied to the seismic fragility assessment of a nuclear power plant (NPP) containment building for comparison with a relevant conventional uniform hazard response spectrum (UHRS). Three different control frequencies are considered in developing conditional spectra. The contribution of diverse magnitudes and epicentral distances is identified from deaggregation for the UHRS at a control frequency and incorporated into the conditional spectra. A total of 30 ground motion records are selected and scaled to simulate the probability distribution of each conditional spectra, respectively. A set of lumped mass stick models for the containment building are built considering nonlinear bending and shear deformation and uncertainty in modeling parameters using the Latin hypercube sampling technique. Incremental dynamic analysis is conducted for different seismic input models in order to estimate seismic fragility functions. The seismic fragility functions and high confidence of low probability of failure (HCLPF) are calculated for different seismic input models and analyzed comparatively.
