A key parameter in the design of a laterally loaded pile is the determination of its performance level. Performance level of a pile is usually expressed as the maximum head deflection and bending moment. In general, uncertainties in the performance of a pile originates from many factors such as inherent variability of soil properties, inadequate soil exploration programs, errors taking place in the determination of soil parameters, limited calculation models as well as uncertainties in loads. This makes it difficult for practicing engineers to decide for the reliability of laterally loaded piles both in cohesive and cohesionless soils. In this paper, limit state functions and consequent performance functions are obtained for single concrete piles to predict the maximum bending moment, a widely accepted design criterion along with the permissible pile head displacement. Analyses were made utilizing three dimensional finite element method and soil-structure-interaction (SSI) effects were accounted for.

In this study, the pressuremeter test (PMT) and the standard penetration test (SPT) were performed on the lateral pile loading tests site to evaluate the coefficient of subgrade reaction, which is used for load-deformation behavior analysis of laterally loaded piles by elastic subgrade reaction method. As a result, widely used empirical formulas of the coefficient of subgrade reaction by N values of SPT is evaluated conservatively lateral behavior of piles. While the method of directly used PMT results and evaluation method of the coefficient of subgrade reaction considering deformation moduli of soil and a pile diameter that is able to estimate very similar to actual load-deformation behavior of laterally loaded piles in deformation range of 0.5%-1.0% of a pile diameter.
In this study, we grasped the resistance state of the back ground which had a notable influence on computing the lateral resistance of the laterally loaded pile group in the homogeneous ground by the model test. Resistance state was grasped as the depth of rotation-point, wedge failure angle, and wedge wing angle. The model experiment is performed by varying the width, spacing and number of piles and the relative density of sand in this study. According to the observation of the rear ground surface deformation of the piles in lateral load, rotation point ratio, wedge failure angle, and wedge wing angle of the front row were similar to those of the middle row; however, those of the back row were relatively smaller. The rotation point ratio, wedge failure angle and wedge wing angle of the piles in parallel were the same as those of a single pile. Based on the model test results, equations for estimation of the rotation-point, wedge failure angle, and wedge wing angle are proposed.
In offshore engineering, lateral cyclic loading may induce excessive lateral movement and bending strain in pile foundations. Previous studies mainly focused on deformation mechanisms of single piles due to lateral cyclic loading. In this paper, centrifuge model tests were conducted to investigate the response of a $2{\times}2$ pile group due to lateral cyclic loading in clay. After applying each loading-unloading cycle, the pile group cannot move back to its original location. It implies that residual movement and bending strain are induced in the pile group. This is because cyclic loading induces plastic deformation in the soil surrounding the piles. As the cyclic load increases from 62.5 to 375 kN, the ratio of the residual to the maximum pile head movements varies from 0.30 to 0.84. Moreover, the ratio of the residual to the maximum bending strains induced in the piles is in a range of 0.23 to 0.82. The bending strain induced in the front pile is up to 3.2 times as large as that in the rear pile. Thus, much more protection measures should be applied to the front piles to ensure the serviceability and safety of pile foundations.

To investigate the soil-pile interactive performance under lateral loads, a set of laboratory model tests was conducted on remoulded test bed of soft clay and medium dense sand. Then, a simplified boundary element analysis had been carried out assuming floating pile. In case of soft clay, it has been observed that lateral loads on piles can initiate the formation of a gap, soil heave and the tension crack in the vicinity of the soil surface and the interface, whereas in medium dense sand, a semi-elliptical depression zone can develop. Comparison of test and boundary element results indicates the accuracy of the solution developed. However, in the boundary element analysis, the possible shear stresses likely to be developed at the interface are ignored in order to simplify the existing complex equations. Moreover, it is unable to capture the influence of base restraint in case of a socketed pile. To bridge up this gap and to study the influence of the initial stress state and interface parameters, a field based case-study of laterally-loaded pile in layered soil with socketed tip is explored and modelled using the finite element method. The results of the model have been verified against known field measurements from a case-study. Parametric studies have been conducted to investigate the influence of the coefficient of lateral earth pressure and the interface strength reduction factor on the results of the model.
In practice, analysis of laterally loaded piles is carried out using beams on non-linear Winkler springs model (often known as p-y method) due to its simplicity, low computational cost and the ability to model layered soils. In this approach, soil-pile interaction along the depth is characterized by a set of discrete non-linear springs represented by p-y curves where p is the pressure on the soil that causes a relative deformation of y. p-y curves are usually constructed based on semi-empirical correlations. In order to construct API/DNV proposed p-y curve for clay, one needs two values from the monotonic stress-strain test results i.e., undrained strength ($s_u$) and the strain at 50% yield stress (${\varepsilon}_{50}$). This approach may ignore various features for a particular soil which may lead to un-conservative or over-conservative design as not all the data points in the stress-strain relation are used. However, with the increasing ability to simulate soil-structure interaction problems using highly developed computers, the trend has shifted towards a more theoretically sound basis. In this paper, principles of Mobilized Strength Design (MSD) concept is used to construct a continuous p-y curves from experimentally obtained stress-strain relationship of the soil. In the method, the stress-strain graph is scaled by two coefficient $N_C$ (for stress) and $M_C$ (for strain) to obtain the p-y curves. $M_C$ and $N_C$ are derived based on Semi-Analytical Finite Element approach exploiting the axial symmetry where a pile is modelled as a series of embedded discs. An example is considered to show the application of the methodology.

The load distribution and deformation of single piles which is embedded in Jumunjin sand and Kimhae clay are investigated, based on small scale model tests. Special attention is given to the consideration of flexural rigidity in laterally loaded piles. To consider the flexural rigidity of the pile, tests are performed with the aluminium piles of three different length under different relative densities and undrained shear strength. The test results indicate that the initial slope from the results of tests is proportional to the depth and pile-soil rigidity in both soils. But the increasing rate of the initial slope in the clay is less than in the sand. In addition, the soil resistance is more related to the depth and soil condition than the pile rigidity. Base on the test results, an empirical formula is proposed, which is good agreement with previously published small scale model test and field lateral load test.
This paper presents results from a series of model tests on laterally loaded single piles with both free-head and free-tip conditions. Model tests, using a centrifuge apparatus (middie size, Mark II in 7.1.7.) were carried out in sand based on the variation of different gravity acceleration and flexural stiffness of the pile and relative density of the soil. The aims of this study are to estimate the effect of gravity acceleratioil, flexordis stiffness, and relative density on the behavior of the pile embedded in Toyoura sand and to evaluate the applicability of a family of the p-y curves which was presented by several reseachers(Mur chison & O'Neill, neese et n., scott, Det worske veritas, nondner). The Program is deviloped by using p-y curves, and it can be used for the calculation of the displacement distri bution, bending moment distribution, and soil reaction distribution. By comparing meas ured responses with predicted one it is shown that the results of the p-y curve equation presented by Murchison & O'Neill and Kondner agreed with the general trend observed by the centrifuge tests much better than the numerical solutions predicted by the other sets of p -y curves.
This paper shows the results of model tests on the lateral behavior of single rigid pile, which was constructed by driving, in homogeneous and non-homogeneous (two layered) NakDong River sands. The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the effect of ratio of lower layer thickness to embedded pile length, relative density of sand and pile construction conditions (Driven & Embedded piles) on the characteristics of lateral behavior of single pile. These effects can be quantified only by the results of model tests. As a model result, the lateral behavior depends upon the pile construction condition in loose-density soil more than in high-density soil. If the pile construction depends upon driving construction, the decrease of deflection remarkably increases for both loose homogeneous sand and non-homogeneous soil$(E_{h1}/E_{h2}/=0.18)$ with high thickness of upper layer but the decrease of maximum bending moment shows the opposite result to the decrease of deflection. And, with respect to deflection, it was found that the deflection ratio $(y_{Driven}y_{Embedded})$ of embedded to driven piles has the ranges of 0.65 - 0.88 $(D_r=90%)$0.38 - 0.65 $(D_r=61.8%)$ for each relative density of homogeneous soil and the range of 0.6 - 0.88 for non-homogeneous soil. Also, in this study, the experimental equation for the effects of drop height (DH) and H/L on the ratios of $y_D/y_E\; and MBM_D/MBM_ E$ is suggested from model tests.
This paper shows that there are the results of a series of model tests on the behavior of single pipe pile which is subjected to lateral load in, Nak-dong River sand. The purpose of the present paper is to estimate the effect of Non-homogeneity. constraint condition of pile head, lateral load velocity, relative density, and embedded length of pile on the behavior of single pile. These effects can be quantified only by the results of model tests. Also, these are compared with the results of the numerical methods (p-y method, modified Vlasov method; new ${\gamma}$ parameter, Characteristic Load Method'CLM). In this study, a new ${\gamma}$ parameter equation based on the Vlasov method was developed to calculate the modulus of subgrade reaction (E. : nhz.) proportional to the depth. The p-y method of analysis is characterized by nonlinear behavior. and is an effective method of designing deep foundations subjected to lateral loads. The new method, which is called the characteristic load method (CLM). is simpler than p-y analysis. but its results closely approximates p-y analysis results. The method uses dimensional analysis to characterize the nonlinear behavior of laterally loaded piles with respect to be relationships among dimensionless variables. The modulus of subgrade reaction used in p-y analysis and modified Vlasov method obtained from back analysis using direct shear test (DST) results. The coefficients obtained from DST and the modified ones used for the prediction of lateral behavior of ultimate soil reaction range from 0.014 to 0.05. and from 0.2 to 0.4 respectively. It is shown that the predicted numerical results by the new method (CLM), p-y analysis, and modified Vlasov method (new parameter) agree well with measured results as the relative density increases. Also, the characteristic load method established applicability on the Q-Mnu. relationship below y/D=0.2.
