The effect of stabilizing piles on cut slopes is checked and the behavior of slope soil and piles are observed throughout the year by field measurements on the large-scale cut slopes. First of all, the behavior of the slope soil was measured by inclinometers during slope modification. Landslides occurred in this area due to the soil cutting for slope modification. The horizontal deformations of slope soil are gradually increased and rapidly decreased at depth of sliding surface. As the result of measuring deformation, the depth of sliding surface below the ground surface can be known. Based on the measuring the depth of the sliding surface, some earth retention system including stabilizing piles were designed and constructed in this slope. To check the stability of the reinforced slope using stabilizing piles, an instrumentation system was installed. As the result of instrumentation, the maximum deflection of piles is measured at the pile head. It is noted that the piles deform like deflection on a cantilever beam. The maximum bending stress of piles is measured at the soil layer. The pile above the soil layer is subjected to lateral earth pressure due to driving force of the slope, while pile below soil layer is subjected to subgrade reaction against pile deflection. The deflection of piles is increased during cutting slope in front of piles for the construction of soil nailing. As a result of research, the effect and applicability of stabilizing piles in large-scale cut slopes could be confirmed sufficiently.

In this study, the method to predict the lateral response by using strain data is presented on the steel moment frame. For this, the reliability of the proposed method by applying the example of five-story frame structure were verified. Using the strain value of columns, it predicted the lateral response of structure. It is assumed that all of four strain sensors for one column set up and the strain responses of both end of the column are utilized. The lateral response of member is calculated by using the slope deflection method. Also, using the acceleration response of the one layer, the stiffness of the rotation spring located in the supporting point is predicted. As a result, it was effective to understand the lateral displacement and acceleration responses and to predict local damage and location.
The critical load of a continuous compression member was determined by the beam-analogy method. The proposed method utilizes the stress-analysis results of the analogous continuous beam, where imaginary concentrated lateral load changing its direction is applied at each midspan. The proposed method gives a lower bound error of critical load and can predict the span that buckles first. The effective length factors for braced frame columns can be easily determined by the present method, but result in the upper bound errors in all cases, which can lead to a conservative structural design.

This study aimed to examine the therapeutic effects of backward walking. The subjects were randomly assigned to an experimental group of 16 subjects and a control group of 17 subjects. All subjects walked barefoot for twenty minutes on the treadmill (HM50EX, Daeho, Korea) for five times per week for total four weeks. The average gait velocities of subjects were 3 km/h on a slope of 10%. The experimental group walked back and the control group walked forward. The experimental group showed significant increments in variable of medial-lateral, anterior-posterior, step length, velocity compared to the pre-intervention results. In addition, the control group showed significant increments in the anterior-posterior, velocity compared to the pre-intervention results. Significant differences in the post-training gains in variable of anterior-posterior, step length, velocity were observed between the experimental group and the control group. There were positive effects of backward walking on their gait and balance ability after intervention.
The available analytical methods of analysis for laterally loaded piles in level ground cannot be directly applied to such piles in sloping ground. With the commercially available software, the simulation of the appropriate field condition is a challenging task, and the results are subjective. Therefore, it becomes essential to understand the process of development of a user-framed numerical formulation, which may be used easily as per the specific site conditions without depending on other indirect methods of analysis as well as on the software. In the present study, a detailed three-dimensional finite element formulation is presented for the analysis of laterally loaded piles in sloping ground developing the 18 node triangular prism elements. An application of the numerical formulation has been illustrated for the pile located at the crest of the slope and for the pile located at some edge distance from the crest. The specific examples show that at any given depth, the displacement and bending moment increase with an increase in slope of the ground, whereas they decrease with increasing edge distance.

In the design of cut and cover tunnels, the structural analysis has been used for its simplicity. Contrarily to the geotechnical analysis, this technique could not account for the geological and geometric factors. In this study, the dominant factors influencing the behavior of cut and cover tunnel such as interface element, cut slope, distance between cut slope and tunnel lining, berm, coefficient of lateral earth pressure, were investigated and compared by geotechnical numerical analysis. Based on the results, the variations of earth pressure, bending moment, shear stress, axial load, and displacements were evaluated and analyzed for each factor.
PURPOSES : This study estimated an asphalt pavement internal behavior under uphill lanes considering reducing speed of heavy truck on uphill slope. METHODS : Truck performance curve which has been adapted to "Korea Highway Capacity Manual" was analyzed. And asphalt pavement internal behaviors were estimated with Multi-layered elastic analysis using KPRP(Korea Pavement Research Program) dynamic modulus prediction equations. RESULTS : As a result, it is shown that when the standard truck drives 2.0 km at a speed of 80 km/h in 8% climbing slope, it's speed reduced to 25.4 km/h, at same time frequency in asphalt layer decrease to 67.2% and it's dynamic modulus degrades to 30.9%. Based on these results, internal behavior as decreasing vehicle speed on uphill lanes were estimated. CONCLUSIONS : From the results of Multi-layered elastic analysis, internal behavior showed that when the standard truck drives 2.0 km at a speed of 80 km/h in 8% slope on uphill lanes, vertical strain was increased to 44.4% at the bottom of surface course, and lateral tensile strain was increased to 20.5% at the bottom of base course.

Soil nailing is used as a method of slope stabilization and excavation support. The design method of soil nail are based on experience or assumption of interaction between soil and reinforcement. Most design methods simply considers the tension of reinforcement for analysis of slope stabilization. Soil nails interact with soils under combined loading of shear and tension. Jewell & Pedley(1990) suggested a design equation of shear force with bending stiffness and discussed that the magnitude of the maximum shear force is small in comparison with the maximum axal force. However, they have used a very conservative limiting bearing stress on nails. This paper discusses that the shear strength of soil nails should not be disregarded with proper bearing stresses on nails. The modified FHWA design method was proposed by considering shear forces on nails with bending stiffness.

This work deals with dynamic analysis of a monorail system with magnetic caterpillar where magnets are embedded inside each articulated element of the caterpillar, augmenting traction force of main rubber wheels to climb up slope up to 15 degree grade. Considerations are first given to determine stiffness of the primary and secondary suspension springs in order for the natural frequencies of car body and bogie associated with vertical, pitch, roll and yaw motion to be within generally accepted range of 1-2 Hz. Equations for calculating magnetic force needed to climb up given slope are derived, and a magnetic caterpillar system for 1/6 scale monorail is designed based on the derivation. To assess the hill climbing ability and cornering stability, and make sure smooth operation of the side and vertical guiding wheels which is critical for safety, a multibody model that takes into account of every component level design characteristics of car, bogie, and caterpillar is set up. Through hill climbing simulation and comparison with measurement of the limit slope, the validity of the analysis and design of the magnetic caterpillar system are demonstrated. Also by studying the curving behavior, maximum curving speed without rollover, functioning of lateral motion constraint system, the effects of geometry of guiding rails are studied.
This paper deals with the characteristics of earth pressure to the debris-fall prevention walls which usually are installed in front of steep slope. Such walls have narrow backfill width where the active soil wedge can not be developed fully. The earth pressure to such walls ue affected by the movement of wall and arching effects due to the friction developing on the surface of adjacent ground slope and wall and therefore cannot be analyzed and calculated reliably. The study is carried out through laboratory model tests using centrifuge test. Test results reveal that the earth pressure to the debris-fall prevention wall depends largely on the inclination angle of the ground slope and the wall movement. The earth pressure reduction due to wall movement was observed at the upper half of wall, while the arching effect was significant at the lower half especially in the case of steep ground slope. It can be said that from the result of this study in the design of a debris-fall prevention wall the earth pressure should be determined considering the inclination of ground slope and the condition of wall movement during and after construction.
