In order to secure the traffic safety especially in the entrance waterway of harbour, it is important that the breakwater and the port facilities should be designed properly considering ship-handling difficulty and traffic flow. In this study, the lateral force acting on ship hull under the external force(wind, current, wave) is investigated quantitatively for the container ship approaching to the Busan and Gamcheon breakwater. The relation of ship-handling difficulty to the breakwater and the arrangement of ship's routine are examined based on the lateral force under the external force. Some of reviews to secure traffic safety on the design of breakwater are discussed.

In this study, we propose an innovative lateral force distribution building system between tall buildings by utilizing the difference of moment of inertia, resulting the reduction of lateral displacement and the lateral forces in terms of an alternative for the dense human and increased cost of lands in highly integrated city area. A successive collapse prevention means by providing additional bearing plate between connections is proposed. In addition to that, a more economical vibration reduction is expected due to the suggested tuned mass damper on the surface of spacial structure. In the considered verification examples, reduced drifts at the top location of the building systems are validated against static wind pressure loads and static earthquake loads. The suggested hybrid building system will improve the safety and reliability of the new or existing building system in terms of more than 30% reduced drift and vibration through the development of convergence of tall buildings and spatial structures.
The seismic design of conventional frame structures is meant to enhance plastic deformations at beam ends and prevent yielding in columns. To this end, columns are made stronger than beams. Yet yielding in columns cannot be avoided with the column-to-beam strength ratios (about 1.3) prescribed by seismic codes. Preventing plastic deformations in columns calls for ratios close to 4, which is not feasible for economic reasons. Furthermore, material properties and the rearrangement of geometric shapes inevitably make the distribution of damage among stories uneven. Damage in the i-th story can be characterized as the accumulated plastic strain energy (Wpi) normalized by the product of the story shear force (Qyi) and drift (δyi) at yielding. Past studies showed that the distribution of the plastic strain energy dissipation demand, Wpi/ΣWpj, can be evaluated from the deviation of Qyi with respect to an "optimum value" that would make the ratio Wpi/(Qyiδyi) -i.e. the damage- equal in all stories. This paper investigates how the soil type and ductility demand affect the optimum lateral strength distribution. New optimum lateral strength distributions are put forth and compared with others proposed in the literature.
Due to the complexity and difficulty in meeting the multiphase flow complexity, similarity, and multiscale characteristics, the mechanism of snow drift is so complicated that the snow deposition prediction is still inaccurate and needs to be far improved. Meanwhile, the validation of prediction methods is also limited due to a lack of field-measured data about snow deposition. To this end, a field measurement activity about snow deposition around a cube with time was carried out, and the snow accumulation process was measured under blowing snow conditions in northwest China. The maximum snow depth, snow profile, and variation in snow depth around the cube were discussed and analyzed. The measured results indicated three stages of snow accumulation around the cube. First, snow is deposited in windward, lateral and leeward regions, and then the snow depth in windward and lateral regions increases. Secondly, when the snow in the windward region reaches its maximum, the downwash flow erodes the snow against the front wall. Meanwhile, snow range and depth in lateral regions have a significant increase. Thirdly, a narrow road in the leeward region is formed with the increase in snow range and depth, which results in higher wind speed and reforming snow deposition there. The field measurement study in this paper not only furthers understanding of the snow accumulation process instead of final deposition under complex conditions but also provides an important benchmark for validating prediction methods.

Large Concrete Panel Structures behave quite differently from frame or monolithic shear wall structures because of the weakness of Joint in stiffness and strength. The joint experiences large deformation such as shear-slip in vertical and horizontal joint and rocking and crushing in horizontal joint because of localized stress concentration, but the wall panels behave elastically under cyclic loads. In order to describe the nonlinear behavior of the joint in the analysis of PC structures, different analysis technique from that of RC structures is needed. In this paper, for analysis of large concrete panel subassemblage subjected to cyclic loads, the wall panels are idealized by elastic finite elements, and the joints by nonlinear spring elements with various load-deflection relationship. The analytical results are compared with the experimental results on the strength, stiffness, energy dissipation and lateral drift, and the effectiveness of this computer analysis modelling technique is checked.

In this paper, a practical control method of wind-induced vibration of high-rise buildings is presented in the form of resizing algorithm. In the structural design process for high-rise buildings, the lateral load resisting system for the building is more often determined by serviceability design criteria including wind-induced vibration level. Even though many drift method have been developed in various forms, no practical design method for wind induced vibration has been developed so far. Structural engineers rely upon heuristic or experience in designing wind induced vibration. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by comparing wind-induced vibration levels estimated both from approximate techniques and wind tunnel test.

Structural walls have been favored for the design of reinforced concrete buildings in seismic zone areas because they provide an efficient bracing system and offer great potential for lateral load resistance and drift control. Loads on structures due to earthquakes are not unlikely to reach, if not exceed, the design load levels. Hence, structural damage to walls is inevitable, and it is necessary to repair this damaged walls. Yet, information on repair method and data related to the strength and deformation characteristics of repaired walls is limited. In this study, specimens which have their aspect ratios of about 1 to 3 will be repaired. For the repairing the damaged walls, new concrete and new reinforcing bar are replaced with cracked concrete and the buckled reinforcing bar, respectively. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the repaired structural walls in the capacity of strength, stiffness, and maximum deformation comparing with the undamaged walls.

Nonseismic designed RC frame have a possibility of shear failure because of deficiencies of reinforcing details. To model the shear failure in numerical analysis, shear strength degradation models which include Moehle's and ATC 40 are compared and applied to push-over analysis. For numerical analysis, three storied building frame is selected and designed according to Korean Concrete Design Code(2003). From the numerical analysis, it is pointed out that there may be great difference in lateral drift capacity if a different shear strength model is used. And the capacity can be severely underestimated if the restraining model of plastic rotation of ATC 40 is used, compared to the use of shear spring for shear degradation.

In this paper, we propose a novel type valveless micro-pump that uses extensional vibration mode of traveling wave as a volume transporting means for solving some problems about check valves, essential parts of usual pumps. The proposed pump consists of two piezoelectric ceramic rings and a metal body located in the middle of them respectively. Because the drift of bended surface that results from the traveling wave excitation controls the fluid flow, check valves are not needed in this pump model. In accordance with the variation of the pump body dimension, we analyzed the vibration displacement characteristics of pump model, determined the optimal design condition, fabricated the prototype pump from the analysis results and evaluated its efficiency.
