Study on Effect of KWOMAC of a Contact Lateral-Wedged Insole with Strapping in Patients with Varus Deformity Osteoarthritis of the Knee (내반슬 골관절염 환자에 대한 밀착형 외측 쐐기 스트랩 발받침이 한국형 WOMAC에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose are to demonstrate the pain, stiffness, and physical function by the Korean Western Ontario MacMaster University(KWOMAC) score of the patients with varus deformity osteoarthritis of the knee after treatment period. Twenty outpatients with knee osteoarthritis(OA) were randomized and divided into the control(n=10) and wedge(n=10) groups. The remission scores of the KWOMAC index of severity for knee OA were compared between the groups. The result of repeated two-way ANOVA's revealed that a contact lateral-wedged insole with strapping produced significantly differences in the pain and physical function score between groups after treatment period(P<0.05), but it was not significant differences in the stiffness score between groups(P>0.05). These results suggest that the pain relief and improvement in function reported by patients with osteoarthritis while using lateral-wedged insole with strapping may be achieved by a reduction in external varus moment and medial compartment load.

  • In this paper, lateral force control of a mobile robot with slip is presented. First, the bicycle model of a mobile robot is derived for the front steering. Second, impedance force control algorithm is applied to regulate contact force with environment. The desired distance is specified conservatively inside the environment to guarantee to make contact. Different stiffness of environment has been tested for force tracking task. Simulation results show that the proposed control algorithm works well to maintain desired contact force on the environment.

  • Wheel/Rail geometric constraint relationships, such as effective conicity and gravitational stiffness, strongly influence the lateral dynamics of railway vehicles. In general, these geometric contact characteristics are nonlinear functions of the wheelset lateral displacement. There is a need to develop a wheel/rail geometric contact simulation program for wheels and rails with arbitrary profiles for the prediction of the dynamic behavior of railway vehicles. An algorithm to simulate any combination of wheels and rails is employed and a GUI for easy analysis is constructed. The simulation program is applied to KTX which will run on both KTX and conventional rails, two rail standards having different rail profiles.   • The vibration of a running railway vehicle can be classified on lateral, longitudinal and vertical motions. The important factor on the stability and ride quality of a railway vehicle is the lateral motion. The contact between wheel and rail with conicity influences strongly on the lateral motion. In this study, an experiment for the vibration of a running railway vehicle was performed using a of the scale model of a railway vehicle. Also, the effects on the car-body, bogie and wheelset were examined for the weight and the stiffness of the second suspension system. The experimental results showed that the lateral vibration increases as the wheel conicity and stiffness of the second suspension system increase. And the lateral vibration of the bogie increases as the mass ratio between car-body and bogie increases. Also, the lateral vibration of the wheel becomes high at low speed, while the wheel of 1/20 conicity makes severe vibration at high speed running.

Contact buckling behaviour of corrugated plates subjected to linearly varying in-plane loads

  • An analytical method is developed for analysing the contact buckling response of infinitely long, thin corrugated plates and flat plates restrained by a Winkler tensionless foundation and subjected to linearly varying in-plane loadings, where the corrugated plates are modelled as orthotropic plates and the flat plates are modelled as isotropic plates. The critical step in the presented method is the explicit expression for the lateral buckling mode function, which is derived through using the energy method. Simply supported and clamped edges conditions on the unloaded edges are considered in this study. The acquired lateral deflection function is applied to the governing buckling equations to eliminate the lateral variable. Considering the boundary conditions and continuity conditions at the border line between the contact and non-contact zones, the buckling coefficients and the corresponding buckling modes are found. The analytical solution to the buckling coefficients is also expressed through a fitted approximate formula in terms of foundation stiffness, which is verified through previous studies and finite element (FE) method.

  • The running stability and safety of a railway vehicle depends on the design characteristics and the contact condition between wheel and rail. In this paper, numerical simulations using ANSYS and ADAMS were done on the basis of the experimental observations. The results show that 0.6 Hz of the tail car motion is due to the natural mode of car combination of the KTX. The effects of the conicity of wheel and the lateral stiffness of the secondary suspension on the running stability were analyzed numerically using ADAMS/RAIL. The results also show 0.6 Hz as like the experimental observations. And the adoption of the wheel of GV40(${\lambda}=0.025$) brought the sway motion at the tail cars, but XP55(${\lambda}=0.055$) did not when the secondary lateral stiffness of the KTX was greater than 0.3 MN/m.

Lateral deformation capacity and stability of layer-bonded scrap tire rubber pad isolators under combined compressive and shear loading

  • This paper presents the experimental as well as analytical study conducted on layer-bonded scrap tire rubber pad (STRP) isolators to develop low-cost seismic isolators applicable to structures in developing countries. The STRP specimen samples were produced by stacking the STRP layers one on top of another with the application of adhesive. In unbonded application, the STRP bearings were placed between the substructure and superstructure without fastening between the contact surfaces which allows roll-off of the contact supports. The vertical compression and horizontal shear tests were conducted with varying axial loads. These results were used to compute the different mechanical properties of the STRP isolators including vertical stiffness, horizontal effective stiffness, average horizontal stiffness and effective damping ratios. The load-displacement relationships of STRP isolators obtained by experimental and finite element analysis results were found to be in close agreement. The tested STRP samples show energy dissipation capacity considerably greater than the natural rubber bearings. The layer-bonded STRP isolators serve positive incremental force resisting capacity up to the shear strain level of 150%.

  • Finite Element Method for 3-D static loaded passenger car tire on the rigid surface is performed for studying the stiffness of tire to compare with experimental data. The tire elements used for FEM are defined each component to allow an easy change for the design parameters. Also, a hyperelastic material which is composed of tread and sidewall has been used to consider a large deformation of rubber components. The orthotropic characters of rubber-cord composite materials are used as well. The air pressure, a vertical and a lateral load are applied step by step and iterated by Modified Newton method for geometric and boundary condition nonlinear simulation. This study shows nonlinear analysis method for tire and the bearing capacity of tire due to the external force.

  • In this paper, the relationship between the material removal rate and the interfacial mechanical properties at particle-surface contact situation, which can be seen in an abrasive machining process using micro/nano-sized particles, was discussed. Friction and stiffnesses were measured experimentally on an atomic force microscope (AFM) by using colloidal probes which have a silica colloid particle in place of tip to simulate a particle-flat surface contact in an abrasive machining process. From the experimental investigation and theoretical contact analysis, the interfacial contact properties such as lateral stiffness of contact, friction, the material removal rate were presented with respect to some of material surfaces and the relationship between the properties as well.
