This study was undertaken to obtain the fundamental knowledges on the weld deflects and it's realtime monitoring method. The paper describes the results of high speed photography, acoustic emission (AE) detection and plasma light emission (LE) measurements during $CO_2$ laser welding of STS 304 stainless steel and A5083 aluminum alloy in different welding condition. The characteristic frequencies of plasma and keyhole fluctuations at different welding speed and shield gases were measured and compared with the results of Fourier analyses of temporal AE and LE spectra, and they had considerably good agreement with keyhole and plasma fluctuation. Namely, the low frequency peaks of AE and LE shifted to higher frequency range with the welding speed increase, and leer the argon shield gas it was higher than that in helium and nitrogen gases. The low frequencies dominating in fluctuation spectra of LE probably reflect keyhole opening instability. It is possible to monitor the weld bead deflects by analyzing the acoustic and/or plasma light emission signals.
During welding of Ni based superalloy, hot cracking was usually happen in the fusion zone of a weld. In this study, the laser weldability of Inconel 713C alloy for the turbocharger wastegate valve (WGV) was evaluated with various welding conditions, such as laser power, welding speed, shielding gas. Welding conditions were optimized by bead-on-plate (BOP) and butt joint welding. For the evaluation of laser weldability, bead shapes and weld microstructures were investigated and tensile test was conducted. The fracture surfaces were investigated for the understanding the cause of the fracture.
Application for laser welding have increased steadily in recent years due to its benefits such as high speed, high productivity and high density energy heat source. In this article these advantages of the laser welding has been considered for Nd:YAG laser stitch welding as a substitute for spot welding of lightweight car body plates. Optimized parameters for Nd:YAG laser stitch welding have been determined comparing the economical and mechanical characteristics to match with the currently used spot welding characteristics.
Application for laser welding have increased steadily in recent years due to its benefits such as high speed, high productivity and high density energy heat source. In this study, the influence of welding parameters was investigated on penetration characteristics, mechanical properties including formability test in disk laser welded 1000MPa class steels. A shielding gas was used and bead-on-plate test was performed with various welding speeds. The main welding test was performed by butt welding with various welding speeds at 2.5 kW laser power.
Molten zone shape of pulse laser welding is affected by welding conditions such as beam power, beam speed, irradiation time, pulse frequency, etc. and is divided into conduction type and keyhole type. It is necessary to design heat source model for irradiation of laser beam in the pulse laser welding. Shape variables and the maximum energy density value of the heat source model are different depending on the molten zone shape. In this paper, pulse laser welding simulation for joining of cylindrical part and circular cover was carried out. The heat source model for pulse laser beam with circular path was applied to the heat input boundary condition, radiative and conductive heat transfer were considered for the thermal boundary condition. For each phase, thermal and mechanical properties according to temperature were also applied to analysis. Analytical results were in good agreement with the molten zone size of specimen under the same welding conditions. So, the reliability of the welding simulation was verified. Finally, the improvements for reducing residual deformation after cover welding could be reviewed analytically.

Laser welding has the advantage of high welding speed and Provides low heat distortion Thus laser welding is a very attractive process for joining thin steel sheet and surface treated steel sheet. And the major item in market for surface treated steel sheet is zinc coated steel. However. the laser welding of zinc coated steel is very difficult because of its low boiling point. Compared with zinc, on the other hand, aluminum has a high boiling point. Thus, laser weldability of aluminized steel is better than that of zinc coated steel. Moreover aluminized steel sheet is a material with excellent heat resistance, thermal reflection and corrosion resistance. The results of laser weldability of the aluminized steel for the full penetration welding will be described in this paper We focused on the investigation of the phenomenons caused by coating condition and behavior of aluminum in weld.
The effects of laser welding beam quality is very large. However, not an analysing case was found for the difference on the plasma emission signal during laser welding according to the beam quality. Therefore, in this study, we compared and evaluated penetration and signal change according to the beam quality at the a similar wavelength band by using a fiber laser and Nd:YAG laser. In addition, we took high speed videography in order to make sure that FFT analysis reflects the actual motion period of keyhole and found the period of video analysis and FFT mostly matched. As a result, it is expected to secure higher reliability than evaluating signal intensity when appling FFT to monitoring.
The effect of welding condition on the microstructures of the weld metal in A7N01 welded by $CO_2$ laser was investigated. The number of ripples was increased with decreasing power and increasing welding speed. In the bead without ripple lines, the subgrain microstructures distribution from the fusion line toward the center of the bead were in the order of cellular, dendritic and equiaxed dendrite. However, in the bead with ripple lines, cellular and dendritic were formed between the fusion boundary and the ripple line. Inaddition, those structures were also observed between the ripple line. Equiaxed dendrites were formed only at the center line region. Cellular and dendritics formed near the ripple line were larger than those formed near the fusion boundary. The cooling rates estimated by the dendrite arm spacing were in the range of 200 to 1150oC/s. Cooling rate was increased with decreasing the power and increasing the welding speed. Mg and Zn segregated at the boundaries of cellulars and dendritics, Mg was segregated more than Zn. The segregation of Mg and Zn decreased with increasing cooling rate. Hardness of the weld metal was lower than that of the base metal in all welding conditions and increased as the cooling rate increased.
In long-haul high speed optical communications, the distance between a transmitter and a receiver depends on the amount of light coupled to a single mode optical fiber from the laser diode(LD) as well as the LD characteristic itself. And the transmitter module must have long lifetime. high reliability, and even simple structure. Such points have induced laser welding technique to be a first choice in opto-electronic module packaging because it can provide strong weld joint in a short time with very small coupling loss. In this paper, packaging considerations and characteristics for high speed LD modules are discussed. They include optical path design factors for larger aligning tolerance, and novel laser welding processes for component assembly. For low coupling loss after laser welding processes, the optical path for optimum coupling of a single mode optical fiber into the LD chip was designed with the GRIN lens system providing sufficiently large aligning tolerance both in the radial and axial directions. The measured sensitivity of the LD module was better than -33.7dBm(back to back) at a BER of $10^{-10}$ with a 2.5Gbps NRZ $2^{23}-1$ PRBS.
Robotized MIG welding of large aluminium components for high speed trains is state-of-the-art. The implementation of online laser cameras enables seam tracking and adoptive modification of welding parameters. A constant fill is achieved regardless of the gap tolerances. Friction Stir Welding has been introduced to the market as a reliable and fast joining technology. The advantages of high welding speeds and the elimination of arc light, fumes and liquefaction in the welding spot lead to economical realisation of heavy-duty gantry systems. FSW robots offer a high flexibility with regard to welding of curved parts, and can be equipped with laser cameras for exact joint tracking.
