  • Objective methods to assess quantitatively port wine stain (PWS) blanching in response to laser therapy are needed to improve laser therapeutic outcome. Previous studies have attempted to assess objectively PWS color based on point measurement devices. To date, these approaches have typically been limited by a number of factors such as small test area and need for contact. To address these issues, a polarization spectral imaging system and an image analysis method have been developed to evaluate quantitatively erythema and melanin content distribution in skin. The developed polarization spectral imaging system minimizes artifacts such as glaring, shadowing, and non-uniform illumination that interfere with image fidelity. Furthermore, the image analysis method has been employed to get images of skin melanin and erythema indices from the acquired color images for quantitative analysis. Finally, using PWS patient color image, the effectiveness in laser treatment of PWS was evaluated by calculating relative erythema index image that is the relative erythema index of PWS region to the normal region. The developed device and analysis method appears to be a simple and effective method for quantitative analysis of PWS blanching.

  • We report on the design and experimental results of a large diameter faraday rotator for the high-power laser system(KLF: Kaeri laser facility) that was completed in late 2007s at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The design involves modelling the magnetic field of cylindrical coil with large diameter(110 mm). Magnetic field generation coil is designed by 6 layers using a rectangular wire with cross-sectional area $3{\times}5[mm^2]$. We obtain an isolation ratio for optical feedback of 35 dB at 1064 nm and magnetic field strengths ${\sim}25kG$. We expect that the design can be widely used optical isolators in high-power laser system.

  • We have been setting up experiments on propagation of shock waves generated by the pulsed laser ablation. One side of a thin metal foil is subjected to laser ablation as a shock wave is generated from a localized spot of high intensity energy source. The resulting reactive shock wave, which penetrates through the foil is reflected by an acoustic impedance which causes the metal foil to high-strain rate deform. This short time physics is captured on an ICCD camera. The focus of our research is generating reactive shock wave and high strain rate deforming of thin metal foil for accelerating micro-particles to a very high speed on the orders of several thousand meter per second. Somce innovative applications of this device will be discussed.

  • This paper descibes a micro groove machining process on the polyurethane biopolymer by KrF excimer laser. To investigate the etch charcteristics of polyurethane biopolymer quantitatively, laser system for ablation was installed with high precison moter and then polymer ablation experiment, in which paramteters were fluence, pulse repetition rate, numbers of pulses and assist gas, was carred out. In this experiment, we found out that the value of critical energy density for ablation is 30mJ/cmsup2/ and the etching rate is more dependent on the pulse number and fluence than any other pamameter. Finally, we machined micro grooves for fiexibility as width 300.mu.m depth 100.mu.m and port for micro-devices mounting as length 100.mu.m width 300.mu.m depth .mu.m on the outer wallof polyurethane biopolymer tube which is used as medical device.

  • Micro former has been known as a useful tool for machining micro parts. It makes micro holes automatically with punches, a hole-shape die and material by rotation of crank shaft synchronously. Micro displacement in micro forming affects on the performance of machining because micro forming size is similar with its mechanical displacement. Therefore, the measurement of this micro displacement is essential to be guaranteed to obtain high forming precision in the whole machine as well as its devices. This paper addresses the development of a laser interferometer to measure micro displacement for a micro former. The laser interferometer is able to measure micro displacement during a few micro seconds with non-contact. For the experiment, a laser probe is installed on the optical table with optical devices and a micro displacement generating device. The velocity decoding board is also added to calculate doppler shift frequency directly. Finally simple experiments are conducted to confirm its functional operation.

  • ZnO thin films for light emission device have been deposited on sapphire and silicon substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique(PLD). A Nd:YAG laser was used with the wavelength of355 nm. In order to investigate the emission properties of ZnO thin films, Pl measurements with an Ar ion laser a light source using an excitation wavelength of 351 nm and a power of 100 mW are used. All spectra were taken at room temperature by using a grating spectrometer and a photomultiplier detector. ZnO exhibited Pl bands centers around 390, 510 and 640 nm, labeled near ultra-violet(UV), green and orange bands. Structural properties of ZnO thin films are analyzed with X-ray diffraction(XRD).

  • High-aspect-ratio(max. 12.5) microchannels with excellent surface quality and good shape uniformity have been realized utilizing laser-induced etching technique. Etch width and depth variations depend largely upon process variables such as laser power and etchant concentration. Etchant concentration in association with viscosity also influence on the cross-sectional profile of the channels. The optimum process conditions for the fabrication of high-aspect-ratio microchannels applicable to micro thermal devices are demonstrated.

  • With the increasing use of high-power laser diode bars (LDBs) and stacked LDBs, the issue of thermal control has become critical, as temperature is related to device efficiency and lifetime, as well as to beam quality. To improve the thermal resistance of an LDB set, we propose and analyze a bypass heat sink with a top canopy structure for an LDB set, instead of adopting a thick submount. The thermal bypassing in the top-canopy structure is efficient, as it avoids the cross-sectional thermal saturation that may exist in a thick submount. The efficient thickness range of the submount in a typical LDB set is guided by the thermal resistance as a function of thickness, and the simulated bypassing efficiency of a canopy is higher than a simple analytical prediction, especially for thinner canopies.

  • Ultrashort pulse laser drilling of polycarbonate track-etched membrane (pTEM) material was used to fabricate a mouse embryo cell trapping device. Holes with a diameter of $2{\mu}m$ to $5{\mu}m$ were fabricated on a $10{\mu}m$ thick membrane using a femtosecond laser with a 150 fs pulse width and 775 nm wavelength and multiple-pulse irradiation. In cell trapping tests, the overall cell occupancy of the machined holes in the fabricated pTEM was found to be more than 80%. The results of a single pulse and multiple pulse irradiation were compared in terms of the surface quality. It was generally found that a single pulse with high energy was less desirable than irradiation with multiple pulses of lower energy.
