  • The laryngeal peripheral nerve system is presented on the basis of our results in the animal. This present paper forcused on the localization of each laryngeal motoneuron, the myotopical arrangements of motoneurons innervating the pharyngeal and esophageal striated muscles whitin the nucleus ambiguous in the motor nerve supply, and the pathway to the larynx in the sensory and symphathetic nerve supplies. Regarding the parasympathetic nerve supply, the neural ganglia and the ganglionic cells in and around the laryngeal nerves and in the laryngeal framework are demonstrated. Most of this innervations, however, is still unclear. In addition, we presented about external branch of superior laryngeal nerve and inferior laryngeal nerve. Discuss from the literature are also reported.

  • Hamartoma is benign pathologic lesion that looks like a neoplasm. But actually hamartoma is derived from congenital developmental errors of mature tissue. That is a focal overgrowth of normal tissue components. Hamartomas have been reported as arising anywhere in the body, but rarely has it been found in the head and neck region. Above all, laryngeal hamartoma has been described few times. We report an unusual case of hamartoma located in the larynx. Epiglottis mass was found incidentally by gastrofibroscopic examination. After the mass was excised by $CO_2$ laser, pathologic diagnosis has confirmed the mass as hamartoma.

  • In this Paper, we developed an electrolarynx controlled by the EMG(electromyography) of the sternohyoid muscle, and rested the property of the new electrolarynx while normal persons with his own larynx use it. for the examination of property of the developed electrolarynx, our researchers performed three different experiments. The first experiment was tested whether that on/off control of the vibrator of the electrolarynx is synchronized with the activity of the sternohyoid EMG. In the second experiment, it was tested when the lower amplitude of the sternohyoid EMG is produced, whether the higher pitch of the electrolarynx is produced, and vice versa. The third experiment was tested the probability that the electrolarynx can produce the voiceless sound. As the results, we found that the developed electrolarynx had the good produce of the on/off vibrator control and the pitch control of the electrolarynx. Also, we ascertained the possibility that it can produce the voiceless sound.

  • Ultrasonography has increasingly moved from being a modality confined to the radiology department to an active diagnostic and therapeutic aid available to the head and neck at the point of patient care. However, the application of ultrasonography to the laryngeal disorder is very rare due to progressive age-related ossification of laryngeal cartilage and the presence of air in the lumen, which contribute to difficult conditions for transmission of the ultrasonic waves. The observation about the movements of larynx or surrounding structures is important to understand the physiology of phonation or swallowing and to diagnose the disease. Ultrasonography is a noninvasive and safe imaging technique that can be used to investigate the anatomic structures of the head and neck. Recently, the development of high-frequency ultrasonography makes it possible to apply the ultrasound in the evaluation of larynx.

  • Pharyngeal and laryngeal foreign bodies are common problem at ENT clinic. Removal of a foreign body is mostly simple with the manipulation of endoscope and various instruments. Rarely, migration of swallowed sharp foreign body makes complication. We describe a 74-year-old patient diagnosed with foreign body in larynx involving thyroid. In this case, we present this disease and the treatment course which has been successfully treated by surgical removal and conservative treatment. Furthermore, we discuss its symptoms, physical examinations through literature review.

  • The preservation of the voice-producing mechanism is an important feature in the management of laryngeal cancer by radiotherapy. But, radiation therapy has certain side effects such as mucositis, tissue edema, necrosis and fibrosis which could effect on normal voice production. Several subjective studies that used questionnaires and auditory perceptual judgements of voice have been interpreted to mean that radiation results in a normal or near-normal voice. Objective evidence of the status of vocal function after radiation treatment, however, is still lacking. We analyzed the changes that occur in voice parameters in a group of patients undergoing radiation therapy, in order to determine the effect of radiation on voice quality. In this study acoustic, aerodynamic measures of vocal function were used to determine the characteristics of voice production. We found that voice parameters in early glottic cancer changed meaningfully comparing to normal larynx with or without radiation and radiation therapy has an little effect on normal larynx.

  • Relapsing polychondritis is an uncommon disorder of unknown etiology. That involves multisystem characterized by recurrent inflammation, degenerative change of multiple cartilaginous structures. The most common clinical manifestation is an auricular chondritis. Other involving systems are joint, nose, eye, larynx, trachea, aorta, heart and kidney. A 26-year-old man who complained of hoarseness and sore throat was referred to the ENT department from internal medicine department. On initial video-laryngoscopic and radiologic examination, there was no abnormal finding. Treatment with high doses of corticosteroid and methotrexate was not effective. Symptoms were aggrevated with dyspnea. Three months later, on video-laryngoscopic examination, bilateral cord fixation with swelling was noted. The radiologic finding showed subglottic stenosis due to collapse of anterior wall of cricoid cartilage. The condition was managed with tracheotomy. We report a case of relapsing polychondritis involving larynx and trachea with bilateral vocal cord palsy which was managed with tracheotomy.

  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma(ACC) is one of the common malignant tumor of the major and minor salivary glands. ACC arising from the larynx is relatively rare(less than 1% of laryngeal malignant tumors) and only about eighty cases have been reported in the English literature. Definite diagnosis of these lesions is made only from a histological analysis, because findings and symptoms are non-specific. The diagnosis progresses very slowly, therefore it often presents at an advanced stage with regional and distant metastasis. Here, we present one case of ACC of the supraglottic region with a review of literature.

  • Pyogenic granuloma is one of the benign vascular neoplasm. The nomenclature is misnomer because pyogenic granuloma is not related to infection and granuloma. It represent histopathologically lobular capillary hemangioma. It is most commonly occurred on skin followed by oral cavity such as gingiva, lip, tongue and buccal mucosa. Herein, we report a extremely rare case of pyogenic granuloma which was developed on larynx of a 81 year-old male with review of literature.

  • Papillary cystadenoma is a rare, benign salivary gland neoplasm containing cystic cavities with intraluminal papillary projections. In the head and neck area, it occurs mainly in major and intraoral minor salivary glands, but rarely in the larynx. We report a case of a 67-year-old female with a chief complaint of hoarse voice diagnosed as laryngeal papillary cystadenoma. This paper emphasizes the need to consider papillary cystadenoma as one of differential diagnosis when benign looking lesions are observed in the larynx, where it uncommonly occurs.
