Background: The nematode species belonging to genus Anisakis occur at their third larval stage in numerous marine teleost fish species worldwide and known to cause accidental human infection through the ingestion of raw or undercooked fish or squids. They may also draw the attention of consumers because of the visual impact of both alive and dead worms. Therefore, the information on their geographical distribution and clear species identification is important for epidemiological survey and further prevention of human infection. Results: For identification of anisakid nematodes species isolated from largehead hairtail (Trichiurus japonicus), polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of internal transcribed spacers of ribosomal DNA were conducted. Mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 2 gene was also sequenced, and phylogenetic analysis was conducted. From the largehead hairtail (n = 9), 1259 nematodes were isolated in total. Most of the nematodes were found encapsulated throughout the viscera (56.2 %, 708/1259) or moving freely in the body cavity (41.5 %, 523/1259), and only 0.3 % (4/1259) was found in the muscles. By PCR-RFLP, three different nematode species were identified. Anisakis pegreffii was the most dominantly found (98.7 %, 1243/1259) from the largehead hairtail, occupying 98.7 % (699/708) of the nematodes in the mesenteries and 98.1 % (513/523) in the body cavity. Hybrid genotype (Anisakis simplex ${\times}$ A. pegreffii) occupied 0.5 %, and Hysterothylacium sp. occupied 0.2 % of the nematodes isolated in this study. Conclusions: The largehead hairtail may not significantly contribute accidental human infection of anisakid nematode third stage larvae because most of the nematodes were found from the viscera or body cavity, which are not consumed raw. But, a high prevalence of anisakid nematode larvae in the largehead hairtail is still in concern because they may raise food safety problems to consumers. Immediate evisceration or freezing of fish after catch will be necessary before consumption.
The largehead hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) is one of the most common fisheries stocks in the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea. The species is caught using a variety of fishing tools, such as a stow net or a long line, as well as jigging and trawling. Scientific investigations have been conducted throughout the world to enable evidence-based estimations for the management and protection of the main fisheries biomass. For example, inshore and offshore hydro acoustic surveys are performed annually using bottom- and mid-water trawls around the Korean Peninsula. However, to date, no acoustic survey has been conducted to estimate fish size distribution, which is necessary to construct a data bank of target strength (TS) relative to fish species, length (L), and frequency. This study describes the frequency and length dependence of TS among fishes in Korean waters for the purpose of constructing such a TS data bank. TS measurements of the largehead hairtail were carried out in a water tank (L 5 m$\times$width 6 m$\times$ height 5 m) at frequencies of 50, 75, 120, and 200 kHz, using a tethering method. The average TS patterns were measured as a function of tilt angle, ranging from $-45^{\circ}$ (head down) to $+45^{\circ}$ (head up) every $0.2^{\circ}$. The length conversion constant ($b_{20}$) was estimated under the assumption that TS is proportional to the square of the length. In addition, in situ TS measurements on live largehead hairtails were performed using a split beam echo sounder.
The purpose of this study was to measure pH, trimethylamine (TMA), and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) as indicators of freshness during largehead hairtail Trichiurus lepturus storage, and to compare these indicators with those obtained by the sensory evaluation of quality index method (QIM) sensory evaluation. Largehead hairtail samples were stored at 4℃ and evaluated every 3 days until decay. The QIM sensory evaluation indicated scores of 0, 8.9, and 20 on storage days 0, 6, and 20, respectively. By day 15, the samples were completely decayed. The pH slowly increased during the storage period, reaching a maximum of 7.4. In the day 6, TMA and TVB-N contents were 2.97 and 15.57 mg/100 g, respectively. Thus, at 4℃, the largehead hairtail starts to decay after 6 days and, after 9 days, cannot be consumed safely

This study examined the power consumption of angling boats during entry, departure, and fishing operations using a black box-type storage device. Through this analysis, it determined the energy consumption and carbon emissions of small fishing boats used for catching the largehead hairtail. The energy consumption and carbon emissions were calculated using formulas provided by the Korea Energy Agency, which incorporated updated emission coefficients from 2022. The findings revealed that the average power consumption of small fishing boats for the largehead hairtail was 546.3 kWh, with a total energy consumption of 0.1164 TOE and carbon emissions of 24.057 CO2. The average energy consumption was calculated at 0.0006 TOE per kilogram, and the carbon emissions were determined to be 0.135 CO2/kg.

Age, growth, and maturity of Trichiurus lepturus were estimated based on right-handed sagittal otoliths belonging to 1,031 fish collected from January to December 2007 in the East China Sea. The outer margins of the otolith were examined and showed that an opaque zone was formed once per year. Marginal increments in otoliths formed as annual rings between June and August, at the beginning of the spawning season. Fish growth was expressed by the von Bertalanffy growth equation, as follows: $L_t=494.0$ ($1-e^{-0.2453(t+-0.4822)}$) for females and $L_t=330.4$ ($1-e^{-0.4292(t+0.7513)}$) for males, where $L_t$ is the total length in mm and t is age in years. The growth rates of males and females were significantly different (P<0.05).The age composition ranged mostly between ages 2 and 4, and the oldest individuals were 4 years old in males and 6 years old in females. Finally, the age composition of largehead hairtail was compared with data from the 1970s and is discussed in the context of environmental changes.
Genomic DNA was isolated from two geographic populations of largehead hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) in Korea and the Atlantic Ocean. The eight arbitrarily selected primers were found to generate common, polymorphic, and specific fragments. The complexity of the banding patterns varied dramatically between primers from the two locations. The size of the DNA fragments also varied widely, from 150 bp (base pairs) to 3,000 bp. Here, 947 fragments were identified in the largehead hairtail population from Korea, and 642 in the largehead hairtail population from the Atlantic Ocean: 148 specific fragments (15.6%) in the Korean population, and 61 (9.5%) in the Atlantic population. In the Korean population, 638 common fragments with an average of 79.8 per primer were observed.; 429 common fragments, with an average of 53.6 per primer, were identified in the Atlantic population. The number of polymorphic fragments in the largehead hairtail population from Korea and the Atlantic Ocean was 76 and 27, respectively. Based on the average bandsharing values of all samples, the similarity matrix ranged from 0.784 to 0.922 in the Korean population, and from 0.833 to 0.990 in the Atlantic population. The bandsharing value of individuals within the Atlantic population was much higher than in the Korean population. The dendrogram obtained by the eight primers indicated two genetic clusters: cluster 1 (KOREAN 01~KOREAN 11), and cluster 2 (ATLANTIC 12~ATLANTIC 22). Individual KOREAN no. 10 from Korea was genetically most closely related to KOREAN no. 11 in the Korean population (genetic distance = 0.038). Ultimately, individual KOREAN no. 01 of the Korean population was most distantly related to ATLANTIC no. 16 of the Atlantic population (genetic distance = 0.708).

This experimental study was carried out to obtain the base data for saving the man power in the fishing operation of largehead hairtail hand line by using the continuous type hand line system with a rotary device which could make a main line move automatically. In order to solve the twists and entangling on the main line happened during operating test, the resistance board was suspended at the end of the main line at sea. As the result, there were no problems of tangling and so on due to up and down moving of a main line. According to the control of a fixed angle of guide roller, it was possible to prevent the main line to be separated from a side roller and a guide roller. In addition, PVC tube between a guide roller and a side roller enabled a main line to be moved smoothly without any entanglement.

The reproductive biology of largehead hairtail Trichiurus japonicus, from near Jeju Island, Korea was investigated based on 4,384 individuals collected by commercial vessel from November 2016 to October 2019. There were more female specimens than male specimens (2.64:1). T. japonicus preanal lengths (PL) ranged from 10.5 to 53.5 cm; the relationships between PL and body weight (BW) were BW=0.0103PL3.1293 for females and BW=0.0106PL3.1251 for males. Monthly changes in gonadosomatic index were analyzed to estimate spawning season. The spawning period ranged from June to November. The size-frequency distribution of eggs suggested that T. japonicus exhibits multiple-spawning during a spawning period. The minimum size of females at maturity was 18.2 cm, while the size at sexual maturity was 25.0 cm.

In this study, we used underwater acoustics to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of largehead hairtail (Trichiurus leptueus) based on the luminous thronging of metal halide fishing lamps and induction fishing lamps. As a result, the illuminating power was approximately 1.3 times higher using the metal halide fishing lamp whereas the density of hairtals by distance was approximately 1.9 times higher using the induction fishing lamp. Regarding water depth distribution, hairtails were detected depths of 25-30 m during August and at all water depths in November as assessed using fishing lamps.

The feeding habits of Largehead hairtail Trichiurus japonicus was studied using 377 specimens collected in the Yellow Sea of Korea. The specimens ranged from 4.5 to 33.7 cm in Anal length (AL). T. japonicus consumed mainly a piscivore, such as Engraulis japonicus [percent index of relative importance (%IRI) =74.1%]. We calculated the trophic level as 3.84 for T. japonicus. Fishes were the main prey items for all seasons. The main fish prey during autumn and winter was E. japonicus, whereas those during spring and summer was Larimichthys polyactis. Fishes were the main prey items for all size groups (<15 cm, 15~20 cm, 20~25 cm, ≥25 cm). T. japonicus also showed size-related dietary shift from Spratelloides gracilis and E. japonicus to L. polyactis and T. japonicus. As the anal length of T. japonicus increased, the mean number of preys per stomach (mN/ST) and the mean weight of preys per stomach (mW/ST) tended to increased (One-way ANOVA, P<0.05). Seasonal and size-related shifts in dietary composition were investigated by PERMANOVA analysis, which showed significant variations among size classes and seasons.
