  • Since 1992, Philips has been developing polymer OLEDs resulting in a first commercial monochrome display just 10 years later. Philips is now focusing on the technology development required to mass-produce full-color polymer OLDE displays, based on passive and active-matrix addressing. High precision inkjet printing has been chosen as the deposition technology for the OLED material. In this paper, we give an overview of the activities of Philips in the area of mobile OLED applications and explore the route towards large screen OLED television.

  • Recently, various display products are being applied to automobiles. In the process of acquiring an image from a display product, a large amount of additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) is generated. Generally known denoising techniques focus on removing noise, so detailed components including image information are proportionally lost in the process of removing noise. The algorithm proposed in this paper proposes a method to effectively remove noise while preserving the detail of image information.

  • Recently, Display devices have become important in the information-oriented society and flat display devices are greatly demanded. Liquid crystal display(LCD) represents one of the most promising devices for large size desk-top monitors, notebook PC and car navigation system. However LCD cannot give forth light itself and must have backlight system. The most popular backlighting system is composed of a lighting-guide plate and CCFL as a lighting source. The number of CCFL must increase up if the area of display is increased. So a new backlighting source with high luminance is needed for large LCDs. In this paper, we proposed a surface discharge FFL with the new electrode structure like the needle shaped electrode as the variation of cell structure to high luminance and low power consumption. In comparison with different electrode structure it has low discharge voltage and current and good optical characteristics. So it has better discharge characteristics than different surface discharge FFL and can be fungible for a backlight as a lighting source in LCDs.

  • Mirror surface machining for large area flattening in the display field has a problem such as a tool wear and a increase in machining time due to large area machining. It should be studied to decrease machining time and tool wear. In this paper, multi-tool machining method using a PCD tool and a SCD tool was applied in order to decrease machining time and tool wear. Machining characteristics (cutting force, machined surface and surface roughness) of PCD tool and SCD tool were evaluated in order to apply PCD tool to flattening machining. Based on basic experiments, the PCD/SCD multi-tool method and the SCD single-tool method were compared through surface roughness and machining time for appllying large area mold machining.

  • Field emission display(FED) using carbon nanotubes (CNT) as field emitters is expected to large-area panels with high luminance and low power consumption. In order to perform the uniform luminance with low driving voltage, we introduced a new electrode to apply higher electric potential over the CNT cathode in 2003.[1] In the study, we described the luminance uniformity of the panel and the improvement of emission uniformity by increasing the emission-site density. The luminance uniformity of the several ideal dots which were selected over the display area in the panel was 2.8%. [2] The CNT cathode was irradiated by excimer-laser, which was effective to improve emission uniformity and lower driving voltage. A prototype of CNT-FED character display was performed for middle size message displays. The prototype panel had 48 x 480-dots and the resolution was 1-mm. The panel realized high luminance at low power consumption. It will be important characteristics for legible and ubiquitous displays. [3]

  • Advanced mobile communication devices require a bright, high information content display in a small, light-weight, low power consumption package. In this paper we will outline our progress towards developing such a low power consumption active-matrix flexible OLED ($FOLED^{TM}$) display. Our work in this area is focused on three critical enabling technologies. The first is the development of a high efficiency long-lived phosphorescent OLED ($PHOLED{TM}$) device technology, which has now proven itself to be capable of meeting the low power consumption performance requirements for mobile display applications. Secondly, is the development of flexible active matrix backplanes, and for this our team are employing poly-Si TFTs formed on metal foil substrates as this approach represents an attractive alternative to fabricating poly-Si TFTs on plastic for the realization of first generation flexible active matrix OLED displays. Unlike most plastics, metal foil substrates can withstand a large thermal load and do not require a moisture and oxygen permeation barrier. Thirdly, the key to reliable operation is to ensure that the organic materials are fully encapsulated in a package designed for repetitive flexing. We also present progress in operational lifetime of encapsulated T-PHOLED pixels on planarized metal foil and discuss PHOLED encapsulation strategy.

  • Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) has remarkably developed in semiconductor and nano-structure applications since early 1990. Now, the advantages of ALD process are well-known as controlling atomic-level-thickness, manipulating atomic-level-composition control, and depositing impurity-free films uniformly. These unique properties may accelerate ALD related industries and applications in various functional thin film markets. On the other hand, one of big markets, Display industry, just starts to look at the potential to adopt ALD functional films in emerging display applications, such as transparent and flexible displays. Unlike conventional ALD process strategies (good quality films and stable precursors at high deposition processes), recently major display industries have suggested the following requirements: large area equipment, reasonable throughput, low temperature process, and cost-effective functional precursors. In this talk, it will be mentioned some demands of display industries for applying ALD processes and/or functional films, in terms of emerging display technologies. In fact, the AMOLED (active matrix organic light emitting diode) Television markets are just starting at early 2013. There are a few possibilities and needs to be developing for AMOLED, Flexible and transparent Display markets. Moreover, some basic results will be shown to specify ALD display applications, including transparent conduction oxide, oxide semiconductor, passivation and barrier films.

  • This paper proposes a new automatic detection method to inspect mura defects on display film surface using morphological image processing and labeling. This automatic detection method for mura defects on display films comprises 3 phases of preprocessing with morphological image processing, Gabor filtering, and labeling. Since distorted results could be obtained with the presence of non-uniform illumination, preprocessing step reduces illumination components using morphological image processing. In Gabor filtering, mura images are created with binary coded mura components using Gabor filters. Subsequently, labeling is a final phase of finding the mura defect area using the difference between large mura defects and values in the periphery. To evaluate the accuracy of the proposed detection method, detection rate was assessed by applying the method in 200 display film samples. As a result, the detection rate was high at about 95.5%. Moreover, the study was able to acquire reliable results using the Semu index for luminance mura in image quality inspection.

  • A 14.1-inch reflective type Thin Film Transistor-Electric Phoretic Display was developed at the esolution of 1280 x 900 lines on plastic substrate. All of the processes of TFT were carried out below $100\;^{\circ}C$ on PES plastic films. The process conditions of TFT were optimized for large area TFT-LCD on plastic substrate. At $60^{\circ}C$ high temperature during 160hours, TFT does not delaminate and IV characteristic is also satisfied.
