A general framework for the nonlinear geometric analysis of elastic space trusses is presented. Both total Lagrangian and finite incremental formulations are derived from the three key ingredients of statics, kinematics and constitutive law. Particular features of the general methodology include the preservation of static-kinematic duality through the concept of fictitious forces and deformations, and an exact description for arbitrarily large displacements, albeit small strain, that can be specialized to any order of geometrical nonlinearity. As for the numerical algorithm, we consider specifically the finite incremental case and suggest the use of a conventional, simple and flexible arc-length based method. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate and validate the accuracy of the approach.
Position and rate control modes arc the two common modes for controlling remote manipulators with joysticks or hand controllers. Generally, position mode is easier for teleoperation than rate modes, when the manipulation work space is small or comparable to the human operator's control space. When the telemanipulator's work space is very large, human operator's control motion range must be large to allow telemanipulator's full range of motion resulting poor control resolution. One way to solve the poor resolution problem is to use indexing. However, rate mode can provide any higher degree of resolution without use of indexing. If two modes are mixed, master controller will be more convenient. The mixed mode algorithm, changes operating mode from position mode to rate mode or vise versa using fuzzy logic. The fuzzy logic algorithm, which has been designed to recognize the teleoperator's intended motion properly, provides an intelligence to a master controller.

This paper develops a robot arm for propeller blade grinding. The grinding work requires a high stiffness robot arm to reduce deformation and vibration which are generated during machining operation. Conventional articulated robots have serial connecting links from the base to the gripper. Thus, they have very weak structure to the stiffness for grinding operation. Stewart Platform is a typical parallel robotic mechanism with very high stiffness but it has small work space and large installation space. This research proposes a new grinding robot arm by combining parallel mechanism with serial mechanism. Therefore, the robot has large range of work space as well as high stiffness. This paper introduces the automatic system for propeller grinding utilizing the robot and the design of proposed robot arm.
Traditionally, surface energy fluxes are obtained by model simulations or empirical equations with auxiliary meteorological data. These methods may not effectively represent the surface heat fluxes in a regional scale due to scene variability. On the other hand, remote sensing has the advantage to acquire data of a large area in an instantaneous view. The remotely sensed data can be further used to retrieve surface radiation and heat fluxes over a large area. In this study, the airborne and satellite images in conjunction with meteorological data and ground observations were used to estimate the surface heat fluxes over Taiwan's Chaiyi Plain. The results indicate that surface heat fluxes can be properly determined from both airborne and satellite images. The correlation coefficient of surface heat fluxes with in situ corresponding observations is over 0.60. We also observe that the remotely sensed data can efficiently provide a long term monitoring of surface heat fluxes over Taiwan's Chaiyi Plain.

The dynamic response analysis for large structures using finite element method requires a large amount of computational resources. This paper presents an efficient vibration analysis procedure by combining node-based substructuring reduction method with a response analysis scheme for structures with undamped, proportional or nonproportional damping. The iterative form of substructuring reduction scheme is derived to reduce the full eigenproblem and to calculate the dynamic responses. In calculating the time response, direct integration scheme is used because it can be applied directly to the reduced model. Especially for the non proportional damping matrix, the transformation matrices defined in the displacement space are used to reduce the system. The efficiency and the effectiveness of the present method are demonstrated through the numerical examples.
Both ground and space telescopes are being built larger and larger. Accordingly, the secondary mirrors become larger which are convex mostly on the surface form. Testing convex mirrors becomes more difficult and delicate than testing concave mirrors in optics, because additional optical components are needed to make the reflected rays converge. Hindle type tests are frequently used for measuring the surface deforms of convex mirrors, which employs a meniscus lens to reverse the diverted rays from the mirrors. In case of testing large convex mirrors by using Hindle type tests, attention would be needed as larger meniscus lens is required. A method of modified Hindle test has been studied and the characteristics are analyzed. In this paper, current method of testing convex mirrors is presented, and a new method is discussed.

CQUEAN(Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse) has been used at the 2.1 m Otto Struve Telescope of the McDonald Observatory since 2010. This camera is optimized at 0.7 - 1.1 um for the survey of Lyman break of high redshift (z > 5) quasars in the early universe. The current system has a filter wheel consist of seven (g', r', I', z', Y, Iz and Is) broad-band filters. We are upgrading this filter wheel to have 20 narrow band filters, with which we can take spectral energy distributions of targets. The new filter wheel consists of interchangeable cartridges for 50 mm square filters, a speed reducer unit, and a step motor. This new design of the large size filter wheel can be applied to other large format CCD cameras.
The entropies and chemical potentials of hard-sphere solutes solvated in hard-sphere solids were calculated by Monte Carlo method using the radial free-space distribution function. This method is based on calculating the entropy by comparing the free volume of a molecule with that of an ideal gas, and is applicable even when the size of solute is very large and the solvent is a solid. When the diameter of hard-sphere solute is small the solute molecule behaves as like as a fluid in solid structures, but when the diameter of solute becomes large, a fluid-to-solid phase transition takes place. The fluid-to-solid phase transition occurs at the region of the smaller size of solute with the more increase of solvent density. The least square fit values of analytical form of the radial free-space distribution functions of solute molecules are presented for future uses.
In a free-space coherent optical communication system, wavefront distortion is frequently beyond the correction range of the adaptive-optics system after the laser has propagated through the atmospheric turbulence. A method of residual wavefront correction is proposed, to improve the quality of coherent optical communication in free space. The relationship between the wavefront phase expanded by Zernike polynomials and the mixing efficiency is derived analytically. The influence of Zernike-polynomial distortion on the bit-error rate (BER) of a phase-modulation system is analyzed. From the theoretical analysis, the BER of the system changes periodically, due to the periodic extension of wavefront distortion. Experimental results show that the BER after correction is reduced from 10-1 to 10-4; however, when the closed-loop control algorithm with residual correction is used, the experimental results show that the BER is reduced from 10-1 to 10-7.
We present spatial variations of chemical abundances ([Fe/H] and [α/Fe]) in the Galactic disk, using a large number of dwarfs and giants from Large Sky Area Multi-object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). Specifically, we investigate how the metallicity distribution function (MDF) and the alpha abundance distribution function (ADF) change with the distance from the Galactic center to understand the chemical evolution history of the Galactic disk. We also study the difference (if any) in the MDF and ADF between dwarfs and giants to provide valuable clues to the formation history of the Galactic disk.
