A new inflow turbulence generation method and a combined dynamic SGS model recently developed by the authors were applied to evaluate the wind effects on 508 m high Taipei 101 Tower. Unlike the majority of the past studies on large eddy simulation (LES) of wind effects on tall buildings, the present numerical simulations were conducted for the full-scale tall building with Reynolds number greater than $10^8$. The inflow turbulent flow field was generated based on the new method called discretizing and synthesizing of random flow generation technique (DSRFG) with a prominent feature that the generated wind velocity fluctuations satisfy any target spectrum and target profiles of turbulence intensity and turbulence integral length scale. The new dynamic SGS model takes both advantages of one-equation SGS model and a dynamic production term without test-filtering operation, which is particular suitable to relative coarse grid situations and high Reynolds number flows. The results of comparative investigations with and without generation of inflow turbulence show that: (1) proper simulation of an inflow turbulent field is essential in accurate evaluation of dynamic wind loads on a tall building and the prescribed inflow turbulence characteristics can be adequately imposed on the inflow boundary by the DSRFG method; (2) the DSRFG can generate a large number of random vortex-like patterns in oncoming flow, leading to good agreements of both mean and dynamic forces with wind tunnel test results; (3) The dynamic mechanism of the adopted SGS model behaves adequately in the present LES and its integration with the DSRFG technique can provide satisfactory predictions of the wind effects on the super-tall building.

A three-dimensional numerical model is employed to investigate wave deformation due to a submerged structure. The three-dimensional numerical model solves the spatially averaged Navier-Stokes equations for two-phase flows. The LES(large-eddy-simulation) approach is adopted to model the turbulence effect by using the Smagorinsky SGS(sub-grid scale) closure model. The two-step projection method is employed in the numerical solutions, aided by the Bi-CGSTAB technique to solve the pressure Poisson equation for the filtered pressure field. The second-order accurate VOF(volume-of-fluid) method is used to track the distorted and broken free surface. A simple linear wave is generated on a constant depth and compared with analytical solutions. The model is then applied to study wave deformation due to a submerged structure and the predicted results are compared with available laboratory measurements.
Three-dimensional structures of a vortical flow field and heat transfer characteristics in a partially blocked 7-pin fuel assembly mock-up of sodium-cooled fast reactor have been investigated through a numerical analysis using a commercial computational fluid dynamics code, ANSYS CFX. The simulation with the SST turbulence model agrees well with the experimental data of outlet and cladding wall temperatures. From the analysis on the limiting streamline at the wall, multi-scale vortexes developed in axial direction were found around the blockage. The vortex core has a high cladding wall temperature, and the attachment line has a low cladding wall temperature. The small-scale vortex structures significantly enhance the convective heat transfer because it increases the turbulent mixing and the turbulence kinetic energy. The large-scale vortex structures supply thermal energy near the heated cladding wall surface. It is expected that control of the vortex structures in the fuel assembly plays a significant role in the convective heat transfer enhancement. Furthermore, the blockage plate and grid spacer increase the pressure drop to about 36% compared to the bare case.
In this paper, a stabilized large eddy simulation technique is developed to predict turbulent flow with high Reynolds number. Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) stabilized method and three-step technique are both implemented for the finite element formulation of Smagorinsky sub-grid scale (SGS) model. Temporal discretization is performed using three-step technique with viscous term treated implicitly. And the pressure is computed from Poisson equation derived from the incompressible condition. Then two numerical examples of turbulent flow with high Reynolds number are discussed. One is lid driven flow at Re = $10^5$ in a triangular cavity, the other is turbulent flow past a square cylinder at Re = 22000. Results show that the present technique can effectively suppress the instabilities of turbulent flow caused by traditional FEM and well predict the unsteady flow even with coarse mesh.

The turbulent flow characteristics in the channel flow are investigated using large eddy simulation(LES) of FDS code, built in NIST(USA), in which the near-wall flow is solved by Werner-Wengle wall function. The periodic flow condition is applied in streamwise direction to get the fully developed turbulent flow and symmetric condition is applied in lateral direction. The height of the channel is H=1m, and the length of the channel is 6H, and the lateral length is H. The total grid is $32{\times}32{\times}32$ and $y^+$ is kept above 11 to fulfill the near-wall flow requirement. The Smagorinsky model is used to solve the sub-grid scale stress. Smagorinsky constant $C_s$ is 0.2(default in FDS). Three cases of Reynolds number(10,700, 26,000, 49,000.), based on the channel height, are analyzed. The simulated results are compared with direct numerical simulation(DNS) and particle image velocimetry(PIV) experimental data. The linear low-Re eddy viscosity model of Launder & Sharma and non-linear low-Re eddy viscosity model of Abe-Jang-Leschziner are utilized to compare the results with LES of FDS. Reynolds normal stresses, Reynolds shear stresses, turbulent kinetic energys and mean velocity flows are well compared with DNS and PIV data.

Recently, many attempts to run numerical ocean models in cloud computing environments have been tried actively. A cloud computing environment can be an effective means to implement numerical ocean models requiring a large-scale resource or quickly preparing modeling environment for global or large-scale grids. Many commercial and private cloud computing systems provide technologies such as virtualization, high-performance CPUs and instances, ether-net based high-performance-networking, and remote direct memory access for High Performance Computing (HPC). These new features facilitate ocean modeling experimentation on commercial cloud computing systems. Many scientists and engineers expect cloud computing to become mainstream in the near future. Analysis of the performance and features of commercial cloud services for numerical modeling is essential in order to select appropriate systems as this can help to minimize execution time and the amount of resources utilized. The effect of cache memory is large in the processing structure of the ocean numerical model, which processes input/output of data in a multidimensional array structure, and the speed of the network is important due to the communication characteristics through which a large amount of data moves. In this study, the performance of the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS), the High Performance Linpack (HPL) benchmarking software package, and STREAM, the memory benchmark were evaluated and compared on commercial cloud systems to provide information for the transition of other ocean models into cloud computing. Through analysis of actual performance data and configuration settings obtained from virtualization-based commercial clouds, we evaluated the efficiency of the computer resources for the various model grid sizes in the virtualization-based cloud systems. We found that cache hierarchy and capacity are crucial in the performance of ROMS using huge memory. The memory latency time is also important in the performance. Increasing the number of cores to reduce the running time for numerical modeling is more effective with large grid sizes than with small grid sizes. Our analysis results will be helpful as a reference for constructing the best computing system in the cloud to minimize time and cost for numerical ocean modeling.

This study presented numerical simulations of smooth-bed flows in the rectangular open-channel using the source code by OpenFOAM. For the analysis of the turbulent flow, Large Eddy Simulations were carried out and the dynamic sub-grid scale model proposed by Germano et al. (1991) is used to model the residual stress term. In order to analyze the coherent structure, the uw quadrant method proposed by Lu and Willmarth (1973) is used and the contribution rate and the fraction time of the instantaneous Reynolds stress are obtained in the Reynolds stress. The results by the present study are analyzed and compared with data from previous laboratory studies and direct numerical simulations. It is found that the contribution rate of the ejection events is larger than that of sweep events over the buffer layer in the open-channel flow over the smooth bed, however, the frequency of the sweep event is higher than that of the ejection events.

In order to investigate the characteristics of unsteady flow in a mixed flow pump guide vane under the small flow conditions, several indicator points in a mixed flow pump guide vane was set, the three-dimensional unsteady turbulence numerical value of the mixed flow pump which is in the whole flow field will be calculated by means of the large eddy simulation (LES), sub-grid scale model and sliding mesh technology. The experimental results suggest that the large eddy simulation can estimate the positive slope characteristic of head & capacity curve. And the calculation results show that the pressure fluctuation coefficients of the middle section in guide vane inlet will decrease firstly and then increase. In guide vane outlet, the pressure fluctuation coefficients of section will be approximately axially symmetrical distribution. The pressure fluctuation minimum of section in guide vane inlet is above the middle location of the guide vane suction surface, and the pressure fluctuation minimum of section in which located the middle and outlet of guide vane. When it is under the small flow operating condition, the eddy scale of guide vane is larger, and the pressure fluctuation of the channel in guide vane being cyclical fluctuations obviously which leads to the area of eddy expanding to the whole channel from the suction side. The middle of the guide vane suction surface of the minimum amplitude pressure fluctuation to which the vortex core of eddy scale whose direction of fluid's rotation is the same to impeller in the guide vane adhere.
The hot curvature-forming of large aluminum thick plate using a grid-typed hybrid die is a process for the production of a spherical LNG tank. Many variables such as the initial die surface quality, grid size, grid thickness, size of blank plate and cooling line design, control the success of the process. In addition, the plate used in this process is generally larger than $10{\times}10m$ in size. Thus, it is very difficult to predict the surface characteristics of the plate during forming and to measure the different parameters due to the high cost of the experiments. In order to optimize the process design for the grid-type die, the development of an analytical method to predict the surface characteristics of the final product in hot curvature-forming is needed. This paper described the development of the method and procedures for FE simulations of the hot curvature-forming process, including hot forming, air flow, cooling, and thermal deformation analyses. An experiment for a small scale model of the process was conducted to check the validity of the numerical method. The results showed that the curvature of the plate in the analysis agrees well with that of the experiment within 0.037 and 0.016% tolerance margins for its side and corner, respectively.

Significant progress in the oil and gas industry advances the application of pipeline into an intelligent era, which poses rigorous requirements on pipeline safety, reliability, and maintainability, especially when crossing seismic zones. In general, strike-slip faults are prone to induce large deformation leading to local buckling and global rupture eventually. To evaluate the performance and safety of pipelines in this situation, numerical simulations are proved to be a relatively accurate and reliable technique based on the built-in physical models and advanced grid technology. However, the computational cost is prohibitive, so one has to wait for a long time to attain a calculation result for complex large-scale pipelines. In this manuscript, an efficient and accurate surrogate model based on machine learning is proposed for strain demand prediction of buried X80 pipelines subjected to strike-slip faults. Specifically, the support vector regression model serves as a surrogate model to learn the high-dimensional nonlinear relationship which maps multiple input variables, including pipe geometries, internal pressures, and strike-slip displacements, to output variables (namely tensile strains and compressive strains). The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method are validated by numerical studies considering different effects caused by structural sizes, internal pressure, and strike-slip movements.
